Vascular changes in the chest wall after unilateral resection of the intercostal nerves in the growing rabbit.

In young, growing white New Zealand rabbits the third, fourth, and fifth intercostal nerves were resected anteriorly on the right side. Six … being fairly strongly correlated to the degree of scoliosis. The capillary densities of the costal periosteum and the intercostal and the pectoral muscle were significantly greater (p less than 0.05) on the right than on the left side, and the difference was positively correlated to the degree of scoliosis. The volume density of the periosteum of the ribs w …

Proximal toe phalanx transplantation for bony stabilization and lengthening of partially aplastic digits.

In congenital malformations the lengthening of partially aplastic digits, by on-top plasty of a bone graft or the bony stabilization of finger stumps consisting of soft tissues without skeletal elements, is extremely difficult. The usual bone graft, taken from the iliac crest or the fibula, will undergo resorption and will have disappeared a few months postoperatively. Experience has shown that the proximal toe phalanx will with-stand any resorption if it is taken whole, covered by its periosteum. Another advantage is the possibility of the construction of a new joint between the metatarsophal…

Subepithelial connective tissue graft: an alternative application for treating endoperiodontal lesions.

This article presents an endoperiodontal lesion treated with a subepithelial connective tissue graft technique using periosteum. A patient with a right lateral maxillary incisor that had been retracted endodontically had gingival fenestration and recession, as well as an extensive apical lesion. Surgery was performed, and 5 months later a metal-ceramic crown was installed. At 6 years post-treatment, the periodontal tissues were stable and there was satisfactory new apical bone formation.

Management of the giant frontal sinus--a simple method to improve cosmesis.

Frontal bossing can be caused by many craniofacial syndromes, however an enlarged frontal sinus is a rare cause. Because of this the management of this condition is variable. One option is to remove the anterior wall of the frontal sinus and dividing this into segments which are then fixed in the desired position using miniplates. This however may prove difficult in thin bone and in these cases the periosteum can be left intact to splint the fragments which are then repositioned using resorbable sutures.

Chronic lower limb ulcer? No--chloroma!

Extra medullary deposits are often associated with myeloproliferative disorders, especially with myeloid neoplasia. These are called granulocytic sarcoma, aleukemic leukemia cutis, myeloblastoma, chloroleukemia, extra-medullary myeloid tumor, and chloroma. They commonly present in the bone, periosteum, soft tissue, lymph nodes, and the skin but can occur anywhere. The authors present their experience with a patient with no history of neoplasm presented with a nonhealing ulcer of the lower limb that was a chloroma associated with chronic myeloid leukemia.

Complex SMAS-platysma and senility.

Following an anatomic study of 18 hemifaces, the authors show the modifications to and the behavior of the complex SMAS-platysma in the process of senility. Through this investigation, they succeeded in better understanding the anatomic modifications to the face's deep structures caused by the loss of tonicity and consequent flaccidity of the integument upon them. The investigation also showed the ligamentary fixations existing among the SMAS, the parotid-masseteric fascia, the major and minor zygomatic muscles, and the adherences of the platysma to the mandible periosteum.

[Periosteal reaction].

The periosteal membrane covers the cortical bone except for the articular surface. The deep layer of the periosteum contains bone-forming mesenchymal cells, capillaries, and nerves. This layer is more active in infants than in adults. Prostaglandin osteopathy, infantile cortical hyperostosis, hypervitaminosis A, and congenital syphilis are examples of periostitis in infants. Incidental asymptomatic periosteal reactions are usually either physiological changes or cortical bone irregularities simulating periostitis. On the other hand, symptomatic periosteal reactions of single bone, such as bone…

EXPERIMENTAL SYPHILIS IN THE RABBIT : VI. AFFECTIONS OF BONE, CARTILAGE, TENDONS, AND SYNOVIAL MEMBRANES. PART 1. LESIONS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM.

From a study of a series of rabbits inoculated with two old strains of Treponema pallidum, it was found that localized infection of bones and tendons was of frequent occurrence and led to the formation of a variety of lesions. The bones usually involved were those of the face and the feet and legs. Most often the lesions arose from the periosteum but developed also within the bone or marrow cavities and at lines of epiphyseal union. Grossly, the periosteal lesions were of two types-one being a circumscribed, indurated, and nodular mass and the other a process of a more diffuse character. Histo…

Clinical efficacy of vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access (VISTA) for the treatment of gingival recession: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access (VISTA) combined with various biomaterials or graft substitutes in the treatment of gingival recession. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in five English databases and four Chinese databases. Data analysis was performed using STATA 16.0 software. RESULTS: A total of 14 literature were included, involving 226 patients with Miller class I or II gingival recession and 526 affected teeth, including 10 cases of single gingival recession patients. The meta-analysis results showed that after treat

Decompressive effects of draining tube on suppurative and sclerosing osteomyelitis in the jaw.

BACKGROUND: Osteomyelitis (OM) in the jaw is an inflammatory disease of osseous tissue that begins in the medullary space and progressively expands to the cortical portion of the bone, the Haversian system, the periosteum and the overlying soft tissue. Despite advances in dental and medical care, OM persists and is of important concern in modern medicine. Active negative pressure is known to prevent post-operative hematoma; decrease the number of bacterial pathogens, accumulation of toxins, and necrotic tissue; and promote osteogenesis and angiogenesis with the use of a draining tube such as t…

Induction of osteochondromas by periosteal resection.

Forty immature and 40 mature rabbits which received periosteal resection from the proximal metaphyses or diaphyses of tibiae were evaluated for the occurrence of osteochondromas at the sites of periosteal defects. Thirteen of 20 immature tibiae with the periosteal defects at their proximal metaphyses showed osteochondromas covered by hyaline cartilage caps. We assume that the occurrence of osteochondroma at the metaphyseal region of growing long bone, where the periosteal defects were made, is due primarily to a decrease in the power of the periosteum to control the circumferential growth of t…

On how the periosteal bone of the delphinid humerus becomes cancellous: ontogeny of a histological specialization.

In cetaceans, the bones of the flippers lack a free medullary cavity and have a cancellous texture, with compact cortices reduced or absent. The present work discusses the ontogenetic basis of these characters in terms of the ontogeny of the structure and textural bone compactness (TBC) of the humeral diaphysis in a growth series of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). The texture of the primary periosteal deposits is compact; soon after their accretion, the deposits undergo an extensive erosion that turns them into a cancellous tissue. A diffuse endosteal front of resorption expands in parall

Management of embossment following the frontal osteoplastic operation.

The deformity in the bony contour of the forehead following the osteoplastic flap procedure on the frontal sinus, termed embossment, occurs in a small but definite number of cases. This complication arises from the combined processes of resorption and deposition of bone following disturbance of the periosteum in performing the operation. A simple and highly reliable method of cosmetic correction employing acrylic cranioplasty has been successfully utilized in a series of cases without complications. The details of the operative technique will be outlined.

Transvaginal colpo-urethropexy with fibrin sealant: 4 years-follow up in 23 cases.

A method of transvaginal colpo-urethropexy, using fibrin sealant was studied clinically. After a fingertip vaginal retropubic dissection, fibrin sealant is instilled in the retropubic space with the intent of inducing fibrosis between the elevated urethro-vesical junction and the retropubic periosteum. Twenty-three patients with urinary stress incontinence underwent this procedure with 82% of satisfactory results and 18% failure. Complications were minimal. In the future, this technique could be useful for ambulatory surgery.

Periodontal space: a major route to bone involvement in oral cancer.

Oral cancers are presumed to involve mandible or maxilla by direct invasion and destruction of periosteum and underlying bone. In countries where there is a high incidence of oral cancers, most patients have poor dental hygiene and chronic periodontitis. We hypothesize that in such situations spread through the periodontal space is the major route to bone. We suggest that micro and macroscopic examination of the root surface can identify this and that this has to be done for proper 'T' grouping of tumours.

[Pediatric neuroblastoma with early bilateral blindness].

The authors present the case history of a child with neuroblastoma and early infiltration of the orbit accompanied by bilateral blindness. The typical clinical signs developed later. The thickening of the periosteum infiltrated by the tumor in the lateral wall of the orbit was demonstrated by computerized tomography. This may be regarded as an early sign of infiltration of the orbit by the neuroblastoma. In the case reported here a severe inflammatory reaction developed in the left orbit and anterior segment during massive chemotherapy and melted the cornea.
