[Characteristics of the course of peritonitis in relation to the degree of perforation of the gastrointestinal tract].

An examination and treatment of 80 patients with general forms of peritonitis has shown that the course of the disease is greatly dependent on the character of the bacterial dissemination of the abdominal cavity. A microbiological examination has shown that in all the levels of perforation of the gastro-intestinal tract there are associations of various microorganisms. The most severe course of peritonitis is observed when caused by infection by colonic contents with prevailing anaerobic ++non-clostridial microflora in the exudate. The method of repeated revisions of the abdominal cavity shoul

[Prospects for the treatment of malignant intestinal obstruction associated with peritoneal metastasis in colorectal cancer].

Malignant intestinal obstruction is one of the common clinical symptoms of peritoneal metastasis of colorectal cancer, and its pathophysiological mechanism involves various factors such as local invasion and compression of tumors, intestinal adhesions caused by the formation of scattered nodules in the abdominal cavity, inflammatory response in the abdominal cavity, and neuromodulation disorders. Patients with traditional intestinal obstruction are generally treated with surgery, but patients with malignant intestinal obstruction associated with peritoneal metastasis of colorectal cancer can p

Regional treatment with liquid barrier agents: a novel therapeutic option for intraperitoneal endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a frequent gynecological disease, which is characterized by the presence of endometriotic lesions, i.e. ectopic endometrial glands and stroma, outside the uterine cavity. Most of these lesions are located in the peritoneal cavity, where they induce a chronic inflammatory and angiogenic tissue response. This is often associated with the formation of peritoneal adhesions. Accordingly, endometriosis is crucially dependent on the close interaction of the ectopic endometrial tissue with the peritoneum and the peritoneal fluid. Therefore, we hypothesize in the present paper that reg…

Ex vivo and in vivo gene transfer to the peritoneal membrane in a rat model.

The efficacy of peritoneal dialysis (PD) depends on preserving the structural integrity and dialysing capacity of the peritoneal membrane. M … brane is accomplished in situ through adenovirus-mediated delivery of the genetic material into the peritoneal cavity. The peritoneal membrane can be genetically modified to produce factors that may be of therapeutic value in maintaining the fibrinolytic balance in the peritoneal cavity, moderating peritoneal inflammation, and studying the development of peritoneal …

Peritoneal resident macrophages constitute an immunosuppressive environment in peritoneal metastasized colorectal cancer.

Patients with peritoneal metastasized colorectal cancer (PM-CRC) have a dismal prognosis. We hypothesized that an immunosuppressive environment in the peritoneal cavity underlies poor prognosis. We define the composition of the human peritoneal immune system (PerIS) using single-cell technologies in 18 patients with- and without PM-CRC, as well as in matched peritoneal metastases (n = 8). Here we show that the PerIS contains abundant immunosuppressive C1Q+VSIG4+ and SPP1+VSIG4+ peritoneal-resident macrophages (PRMs), as well as monocyte-like cavity macrophages (mono-CMs), which share features …

Non-Coding RNAs in Peritoneal Carcinomatosis: From Bench to Bedside.

Peritoneal carcinomatosis represents an advanced stage of tumors within the peritoneal cavity. Once considered an incurable terminal cancer metastasis, contemporary medicine is on the hunt for certain potentially curative options alongside the present day's palliative disease management. However, for most patients, peritoneal carcinomatosis continues to pose a fatal late-stage prognosis with a grim future outlook. Over the past two decades, non-coding RNAs have garnered significant attention due to their undeniable significance in regulating cellular processes across all levels. Disruption of …

Continuous hyperthermic peritoneal perfusion with cisplatin in mice with peritoneal dissemination of B16 melanoma.

We designed a model of peritoneal dissemination of gastric cancer in mice. B16 melanoma cells were injected into the peritoneal cavity of C57 BL mice, the object being to search for an effective treatment for peritoneal dissemination, using hyperthermia combined with cisplatin. Following the intraperitoneal administration of tumor cells, each mouse was subjected to continuous hyperthermic peritoneal perfusion (CHPP) using the peritoneal cavity expander (PCE), with or without cisplatin in the perfusate under conditions of laparotomy. Effects of the therapy were evaluated, based on comparison of…

Distinction between 'inflammatory' and 'immune' macrophages killing Listeria monocytogenes in murine infection.

Two populations of efficiently phagocytic and bacteriolytic cells have been defined in the peritoneal cavity following infection of mice with Listeria monocytogenes. One was the result of a transient inflammatory response 2 days after intraperitoneal (i.p.) infection. It consisted of a mixture of monocyte/macrophages and neurotrophils which, when separated on Percoll gradients or by adherence, were both highly bacteriolytic compared with normal resident peritoneal macrophages. It was rich in recently divided cells as evidenced by in vivo labelling with tritiated thymidine. Although having the …

Transabdominal lymphography after intraperitoneal injection of Rous virus in newborn rats.

Newborn rats were inoculated in the peritoneal cavity with Rous sarcoma virus (Schmidt-Ruppin strain). They were studied lymphographically and histologically after various intervals of time. As a result of lesions of the lymph vessels and nodes, the lymphatic drainage of the peritoneal cavity was increasingly impaired. Pleural effusion developed as a result of leakage through the walls of the lymphatics. The passage through the lymph nodes was blocked and large lymph cysts arose in the mediastinum and retroperitoneally.

Morison's pouch: anatomical review and evaluation of pathologies and disease spread on cross-sectional imaging.

The peritoneum is a complex structure. Having a better understanding of this complex anatomy will enable the radiologist to accurately assess and diagnose the wide range of intra-abdominal pathologies. In this article, we review the anatomy, boundaries, and connections of Morison's pouch. In addition, we discuss the incidence and development of common pathological conditions within Morison's pouch and the role of multiple imaging modalities in assessment and diagnosis of these conditions.

Requirement of endogenous interferon-gamma production for resolution of Listeria monocytogenes infection.

Peritoneal exudate cells and splenic cells of mice infected with Listeria monocytogenes show increased production of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) after antigen or mitogen stimulation. When an IFN-gamma-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used, increased production was first observed 2 days after infection in peritoneal cells and 4 to 6 days after infection in splenic cells. The increased production of IFN-gamma correlated with the clearance of Listeria from the peritoneal cavity and spleen. Macrophages derived from mice at these times were activated as evidenced by expression of non…

[The role of cytokines in peritoneal dialysis].

Peritoneal dialysis is a method of renal replacement therapy which has been increasingly in use worldwide and, in recent years, also in our … toneal membrane, considerable attention was given to cytokines. The main source of cytokines in the peritoneal cavity are macrophages, mesothelial cells, and fibroblasts. In peritoneal dialysis, cytokines play a role both in defense against the development of peritoneal infection and in the course of peritoneal infection. By virtue of their biological effects, cyto …

Treatment of lymphocele following renal transplantation by laparoscopic surgery.

We describe a new technique for internal drainage of lymphocele following renal transplantation performed by laparoscopy. After induction of the pneumoperitoneum, using the cautery hook, a wide opening in the lymphocele peritoneal wall has been performed allowing the lymph flow to enter the peritoneal cavity. A portion of the omentum has been pushed inside the lymphocele cavity and fixed to the parietal peritoneum in order to avoid closure of the peritoneal window. A postoperative CT scan control has shown the complete disappearance of the fluid collection. Internal drainage of lymphocele perf…

Hydatid cyst of the liver: spontaneous rupture with peritoneal and thoracic involvement. Report of a case.

Hydatidosis due to Echinococcus granulosus is an endemic parasitic disease in Mediterranean countries. The most frequent anatomical locations are the liver and lung and the most significant complication of liver hydatidosis is rupture into the biliary tract. Spontaneous rupture into the free peritoneal cavity associated with thoracic involvement is an unusual complication accompanied by a high mortality rate. An isolated abdominal approach is necessary when peritoneal cavity drainage is required and may be sufficient in cases of contamination of the pleural cavity by scolices without suppurati…

Primary abdominal hydatid cyst presenting in emergency as appendicular mass: a case report.

Hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is a common parasitic infection of the liver. Disseminated intra-abdominal hydatid disease may occur following rupture of the hydatid cyst into the peritoneal cavity, producing secondary echinococcosis. Rarely cyst may develop de-novo in the peritoneal cavity without involvement of any other intra-abdominal organs. We present a unique case of 56-year-old woman with a primary intraabdominal hydatid cyst in the right iliac fossa masquerading as appendicular lump.

Feasibility study of a novel technique for treating refractory ascites using a peritoneobladder shunt in a swine model.

Ascites is often treated through paracentesis, which requires repeated application and poses risks. In this study, we developed a peritoneobladder shunt that allows natural ascites drainage from the peritoneal cavity to the bladder. We conducted an experiment to determine the functional effect of the peritoneobladder shunt in a swine model. Peritoneobladder shunts were developed and placed in 4 swine models to test their effectiveness in draining ascitic fluid from the peritoneal cavity to the bladder. The peritoneobladder shunts were inserted laparoscopically; some models received the shunts …
