Burkitt's lymphoma is a form of Non-Hodgkin's B-cell lymphoma. We report a case of Burkitt's lymphoma mimicking peritoneal carcinomatosis. We will discuss the imaging and clinical findings that differentiate between peritoneal carcinomatosis and Burkitt's lymphoma. A 26-year-old man presented with nonspecific abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea associated with significant amount of loss of weight. Computed tomography images showed extensive peritoneal and mesenteric mass associated generalized lymphadenopathy. Core biopsy of the mass confirmed Burkitt's lymphoma. CT scan features are helpful

The authors report a case of mediastinal fluid collection resulting from peritoneal-mediastinal communication after continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case in the medical literature. A dry cough developed in the patient who had been receiving CAPD for 4 years. A mediastinal mass owing to peritoneal leakage of dialysate to the mediastinum was confirmed by a computed tomography scan taken 4 hours after the intraperitoneal infusion of contrast-mixed dialysate. The leakage persisted for 12 weeks after the discontinuat

A variable degree of diffuse peritoneal fibrosis has been documented in all patients who have been on long-term peritoneal dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis-induced diffuse peritoneal fibrosis varies from opacification and "tanning" of the peritoneum, which may have only a moderate detrimental effect on peritoneal transport kinetics, to a progressive, sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP), which may lead to cessation of peritoneal dialysis and to death. Fewer than 1% of peritoneal dialysis patients develop overt SEP as manifested by combinations of intestinal obstruction, weight loss, and ult…

Transperitoneal transport is a complicated process that includes diffusion and convection across the walls of blood microvessels into tissue interstitium, transport through the interstitium, and final passage across the peritoneum to the dialysis solution in the cavity. The purpose of this paper is to briefly review the normal physiology of this process and then to summarize the events that occur in response to inflammation within the cavity. These events begin with stimulation of macrophages, which in turn secrete cytokines. The cytokines stimulate mesothelial cells and fibroblasts in the tis

Diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL) was used to aid in the rapid diagnosis of peritonitis in 138 patients for whom standard diagnostic criteria were not applicable because the patients had altered sensorium, were elderly, or had multiple medical problems. There were abnormal results in 77 patients, and all but one patient had peritonitis. Sixty-five patients had lesions that could be cured only by operative means; 54% of this group of extremely ill patients survived. Of 61 patients with negative results of DPL, only one had intraperitoneal inflammation (acute cholecystitis), which occurred 4 da…

Brevundimonas aurantiaca is an aerobic, non-fermenting Gram-negative bacillus traditionally regarded as an environmental organism within the genus Brevundimonas. Although this species had long been known microbiologically, human infection caused by B. aurantiaca was not reported until 2022, and peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis due to this organism had not been previously described. We report a case of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis in a 55-year-old man with end-stage kidney disease receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. B. aurantiaca was isolated from t…

Longitudinal evolution of peritoneal protein loss (PPL), a reflection of hydrostatic pressure-driven leak of plasma proteins through the large-pore pathway, is not clear. Time on PD causes loss of mesothelial cells, vasculopathy, and increased thickness of the submesothelial fibrous layer. Are these structural changes associated with progressive increase of PPL, in a parallel with the rise in the D/P creatinine? The aim of the present study was to identify longitudinal changes of PPL over time. This single-center, longitudinal study included 52 peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients with a median f

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis is linked to increased mortality rates and transfer to haemodialysis or PD discontinuation. Rare and emerging pathogens can pose challenges in management. We present the first case of PD peritonitis caused by Elizabethkingia miricola through direct contamination, which was successfully treated with intraperitoneal and oral antibiotics.

A healthy and functional peritoneal membrane is key to achieving sufficient ultrafiltration and restoring fluid balance, a major component of high-quality prescription in patients treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD). Variability in membrane function at the start of PD or changes over time on treatment influence dialysis prescription and outcomes, and dysfunction of the peritoneal membrane contributes to fluid overload and associated complications. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge about the structure, function, and pathophysiology of the peritoneal membrane with a focus on c

The purpose of this study was to outline the management of patients with appendicitis and ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) in the largest pediatric surgery department in Germany. Patients with VPS presenting with an acute abdomen between 2012 and 2022 at a tertiary-care pediatric facility were the subject of a retrospective descriptive analysis. Patients were divided into two groups based on their diagnoses: group A (appendicitis) and group B (primary peritonitis). Medical records were analyzed to look at the diagnostics, operative approach, complications, peritoneal and liquor culture, and an…

Peritonitis is the most common complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD) and an important cause of PD failure. There are numerous etiological agents, mostly bacteria. Pantoea spp is a rare cause of peritonitis. We describe three cases of Pantoea peritonitis in three PD patients. Previous reports have identified risk factors such as close contact with plants and animals. We review the typical clinical presentation and prognosis. It is fulcral to teach patients about the risks regarding proximity to plants and animals to prevent this type of infection.

A peritoneal adhesion (PA) is a fibrotic tissue connecting the abdominal or visceral organs to the peritoneum. The formation of PAs can induce a variety of clinical diseases. However, there is currently no effective strategy for the prevention and treatment of PAs. Damage to peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs) is believed to cause PAs by promoting inflammation, fibrin deposition, and fibrosis formation. In the early stages of PA formation, PMCs undergo mesothelial-mesenchymal transition and have the ability to produce an extracellular matrix. The PMCs may transdifferentiate into myofibroblasts
