The diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis is often difficult because of its protean clinical manifestations and non-specific laboratory investigations. In the abdomen, tuberculosis may affect the intestinal tract, lymph nodes, peritoneum and solid viscera in varying combinations. CT, with its ability to provide a comprehensive overview of abdominal structures, is the imaging modality of choice for evaluation of such patients. This pictorial review illustrates the spectrum of CT appearances of abdominal tuberculosis which includes intestinal, lymph nodal, peritoneal, mesenteric, hepatic, splenic

A 59-year-old female was admitted with massive hematemesis and melena. A hematological examination revealed that the red blood cell count was 1.31 x 10(6)/mm3, Hb 3.4 g/dl, and Hct 12%. No source of bleeding was found by an emergency endoscopic examination of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, or by superior mesenteric angiography. At laparotomy a right common iliac arterio-intestinal fistula was found. The microscopic examination of this part of the ileum, including the fistula, revealed the presence of tubercular peritonitis. An extra-anatomic bypass graft using a prosthetic graft was perf

Atraumatic or spontaneous splenic rupture is a rare but life-threatening emergency. Common causes include hematologic malignancies and infections, but tuberculous involvement of the spleen is exceedingly uncommon. To our knowledge, this represents the third reported case of spontaneous rupture of a tuberculous spleen. We report a 50-year-old human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) -positive woman who presented with cough, fever, and abdominal distension, with abdominal examination suggesting peritoneal irritation and laboratory tests showing severe anemia. Emergency laparotomy revealed a ruptured s

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal tuberculosis (TB) accounts for 3% of extrapulmonary TB. Tuberculous appendicitis is a rare type of abdominal TB and is seen in only 0.1%-0.3% of cases. Diagnosis is usually made after histopathologic examination of the appendectomy specimen. In Ethiopia, there had been no previous report of perforated appendicular TB, and to our knowledge, this is the first case report of a patient with perforated tuberculous appendicitis to be presented.
CASE REPORT: A 22-year-old male patient presented with complaints of severe abdominal cramp, periumbilical pain, nausea, 2 epis

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The causes of exudative and transudative ascites can be detected through noninvasive methods nowadays. In selected cases, peritoneoscopy could be necessary for definitive diagnosis. In this retrospective study, we aimed to present the peritoneal biopsy results of patients who had exudative ascites with unclear etiology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed in 86 patients who had exudative ascites of unclear etiology. All the patients showed abnormalities of the peritoneum or greater omentum as determined by abdominal ultrasonography and underwent p

Actinomycosis, tuberculosis, and xanthogranulomatous inflammation are rare but specific causes of tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA). TOAs with these causes are frequently misdiagnosed as ovarian malignancies due to their unusual appearances at computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Tubo-ovarian actinomycosis frequently has a predominantly solid appearance. A linear, solid, well-enhancing lesion extending directly from the mass is a characteristic CT and MR imaging finding. Small rim-enhancing lesions in the solid part of the mass are also suggestive of actinomycosis. Tuberculou

A patient with ascites received a peritoneal-venous shunt for presumed cirrhosis, however surgical specimens grew Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTb) sensitive to all anti-tuberculous drugs. Directly-Observed-Therapy (DOT) led to improvement followed by relapse with multidrug resistant MTb (MDRTB). We discuss pathways for selection of MDRTB within mycobacterial biofilm. This case illustrates the potential for development of MDRTB in patients with long-term indwelling catheters. We emphasize catheter removal and if not possible continuing follow-up for symptoms and signs of relapse.

A 23-year-old man with miliary tuberculosis had severe esophageal hemorrhage secondary to eroding tuberculous nodes. Balloon tamponade and packing with gauze did not alter the profuse bleeding. Empyema of the right thorax, massive mediastinal nodes, an unknown site of bleeding in the esophagus, and diffuse pulmonary involvement with tuberculosis precluded a thoracotomy. Because of widespread peritoneal tuberculosis, permanent esophageal exclusion by ligation was rejected as bowel interposition would have been extremely difficult at a later time. Reversible total esophageal exclusion was succes

BACKGROUND: Fallopian tubal tuberculosis (FTTB), which typically presents with non-specific clinical symptoms and mimics ovarian malignancies clinically and radiologically, often affects young reproductive females and can lead to infertility if not promptly managed. Early diagnosis by imaging modalities is crucial for initiating timely anti-tuberculosis (anti-TB) treatment. Currently, comprehensive radiological descriptions of this relatively rare disease are limited. We aimed to comprehensively investigate the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of FT

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated infection caused by Mycobacterium spp. is rare. Mycobacterium abscessus is one of the most resistant acid-fast bacteria, and treatment is also the most difficult and refractory. Thus, we report a case of PD-associated peritonitis caused by Mycobacterium abscessus that was difficult to treat and led to PD failure.
CASE PRESENTATION: We recently encountered a 56-year-old man who developed PD-associated infection. We initially suspected exit-site infection (ESI) and tunnel infection (TI) caused by methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphyloco

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Ascites may be of undetermined origin despite comprehensive study. This study aimed to assess the accuracy and safety of conventional and interventional high-frequency peritoneal ultrasound in the diagnosis of patients with ascites of unclear origin.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 62 patients were prospectively enrolled; they underwent conventional (3.5-5MHz) and high-frequency (6-8MHz) transabdominal peritoneal ultrasound to suggest the nature of ascites supplemented by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of ascites and/or core biopsy of the omentum or other e

Miliary abscess of the liver represents a rare presentation of multiple liver abscesses. They often occur in immunosuppressed patients, or those with underlying liver disease. We report the case of a 22-year-old patient, without known immunodeficiency factors, surgical history or notion of tuberculous contacts, who was admitted for generalized peritonitis and ileal perforation. An ileostomy was performed. The infectious syndrome persisted in post-operative period, associated with painful hepatomegaly. An contrast-enhanced abdominal CT scan led to the diagnosis of miliary abscess of the liver.

We had tuberculosis infection cases of gastrointestinal tract diagnosed histopathologically during January 1980 to December 1991 in Tokyo National Chest Hospital. There were 12 cases (male 8, female 4) from 24 y.o. to 88 y.o. (mean 50 y.o.). We got histopathological specimen by operation (6 cases), biopsy (4), and section (2). Pulmonary tuberculosis was complicated in 8 cases, 7 cases had cavity formation and another case was miliary tuberculosis. Distribution of tuberculous lesion was colon (7 cases), small intestines (5), cecum (2), rectum (1) and esophagus (1). First symptom was mainly abdo

We report 2 cases of intestinal perforation caused by tuberculosis and affecting the small intestine in one case and the colon in the other case. The patients were men aged 49 and 51 years respectively. Both were cachectic and presented with advanced open pulmonary tuberculosis. Perforation in free peritoneal cavity occurred 2 and 8 days respectively after an antituberculous treatment was initiated. The outcome was rapidly fatal in both cases. Tuberculous enteritis has become rare, but it can still be observed in patients with severe open pulmonary tuberculosis, where the gastro-intestinal tra

Hydrocephalus is a known complication of tuberculous meningitis (TBM). It is almost always present in patients who have had the disease for four to six weeks. However, hydrocephalus can also develop later in the disease course as seen in our 3 patients. All 3 patients had multi-drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) and developed hydrocephalus after variable time after starting second line anti-tuberculous therapy (ATT). A 7 years old girl had hydrocephalus at onset of TBM and was shunted but the hydrocephalus increased in size after 6 months of being on second line ATT in spite of a patent ve
