BACKGROUND: Scabies is a skin infection transmitted by close person-to-person contact. Crusted scabies is a more severe type which is more contagious. Delayed diagnosis of scabies could lead to an outbreak.
METHODS: The outbreak occurred at a 435-bed academic medical center with 76 inpatient rehabilitation beds. The index patient was incarcerated and admitted to our hospital in February 2022. The patient developed crusted scabies after steroids treatment.
RESULTS: The patient was treated with oral ivermectin (200 mcg/kg, maximum dose 15 mg) and topical permethrin 5%. All units were followed …

CME Dermatology 21: Scabies - Clinical Manifestation, Diagnosis and Therapy Abstract. Scabies is a common contagious skin infestation found in all parts of the world affecting individuals of all ages. Its worldwide prevalence is estimated at about 200 million people at any one time. Typical manifestations consist of severe itch that is aggravated at night, and disseminated, excoriated, erythematous papules on the trunk and limbs. Diagnosis can be confirmed by microscopic examination of skin scrapings taken from skin lesions. Recommended treatments consist of Permethrin 5 % cream applied once w…

BACKGROUND: Sarcoptes scabiei infection is a contagious disease affecting both humans and animals. The transmission occurs either by direct contact or from the environment where mites could survive several days remaining infective. The number of products available for environmental control of S. scabiei is very limited. The objective of the present study was to assess the efficacy of biocides or repellents against S. scabiei var suis.
METHODS: Tested products included pyrethroids: permethrin, esdepallethrin and bioresmethrin, bifenthrin, cypermethrin and imiprothrin, cyfluthrin, tetramethrin …

OBJECTIVE: Anopheles gambiae s.l. is the major malaria vector in sub-Saharan Africa, and increasing pyrethroid resistance threatens vector c … sis (13.6%, 95% CI: 9.9-18.4%), while 38.4% failed amplification. All populations were resistant to permethrin, deltamethrin, and alphacypermethrin (mortality < 90%), with mortality ranging from 23% to 64% across locations. Knockdown times were fastest with deltamethrin (KDT₅₀: 32.75-52.80 min) and slowest with permethrin (KDT₅₀: 39.41-93.34 min). Kdr genoty …

Infected mosquitoes are significant vectors of dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, zika and other pathogens. In the view of increasing resistance in mosquito larvae control, photoactivated insecticides is a promising approach by utilizing highly toxic singlet oxygen produced by photosensitizer through irradiation. However, the choice of photosensitizer for mosquito control is limited. Here, we report a novel series of naphtho[1,8-ef]isoindole-7,8,10(9H)-trione and oxoisoaporphines derivatives as excellent type II photosensitizers. Meanwhile, the light-dependent activities against permethrin-sus…

Aedes aegypti (L.) is the primary vector of Zika, dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya viruses. Insecticides used in mosquito control can help prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases. However, it is essential to determine insecticide resistance (IR) status before control measures are undertaken. Only the most effective insecticides should be used to avoid ineffective control and/or promotion of IR. Pyrethroids and organophosphates are the most commonly used insecticides for mosquito control. Here, the efficacy of two active ingredients (AIs; permethrin [pyrethroid], chlorpyrifos [organoph…

The resistance status of riceland Culex vishnui against four major groups of insecticides (i.e., organochlorines, carbamates, organophosphates and pyrethroids) was investigated. Biochemical assays (ESTα, ESTβ, MFO and GST) were also conducted to detect the resistance levels. Throughout a 12-month study period, multiple insecticide resistance was observed in both larvae and adult Cx vishnui. Culex vishnui larvae exhibited low resistance against malathion, temephos and permethrin with resistance ratio (RR) values < 5. In adult bioassay, Cx. vishnui were highly resistant against all tested adulti…

A four years old girl had Phthirus pubis infestation in the scalp, eyelids, eyelashes, neck and shoulders. She had fever, severe itching, allergic reaction and anxiety. The girl was successfully treated with 2.5% permethrin cream. The risk of lice infestation as a community health problem was discussed.

Scabies is a skin disease caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. We report disseminated scabies in a 2-month-old girl as well as eczematoid lesions in her mother. The diagnosis was made by skin scraping and microscopic examination of the crusts. The patients were successfully treated with permethrin cream (5%).

Scabies is an intensely pruritic disorder induced by an immune allergic response to infestation of the skin by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. The biology of the mite, the clinical aspects and diagnosis of scabies infestations as well as the treatment of choice with 5% permethrin dermal cream and the use of scabicides based on other chemical substances are reviewed.

Public health officials weigh the risk for mosquito-borne diseases against the risk for human exposure to pesticides sprayed to control mosquitoes. Response to outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases has focused on vector control through habitat reduction and application of pesticides that kill mosquito larvae. However, in certain situations, public health officials control adult mosquito populations by spraying ultra-low volume (ULV) (<3 fluid ounces per acre [oz/acre]) mosquito-control (MC) pesticides, such as naled, permethrin, and d-phenothrin. These ULV applications generate aerosols of fine…

OBJECTIVE: To provide evidence-based recommendations for family physicians advising travelers on how to reduce their risk of malaria and dengue fever.
QUALITY OF EVIDENCE: A search of MEDLINE from 1990 to November 1998 found 671 articles; randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews were sought. The Cochrane Collaboration was searched for studies relevant to family physicians; meta-analyses of impregnating bed nets with permethrin were found. Health Canada's evidence-based publications were searched; 10 recommendations based on at least one well-conducted randomized trial were found.

Permethrin is probably the most effective topical treatment for scabies. There is little microbial resistance to the drug, and it is highly effective. Toxicity is limited to occasional contact dermatitis. Similarly, oral ivermectin 200 micrograms/kg is extremely effective. Oral administration eliminates the need to be certain that medication has been applied properly. Toxicity has been very limited. It is not available in the US for human use in scabies at this time. The toxicity of most of other treatments that are available has not been studied carefully. Sulphur 6% in petrolatum is recommen…

Insecticide spraying is a common strategy for controlling dengue outbreaks, but its effectiveness is compromised by the development of resistance in mosquito populations. In this study, we subjected a strain of Aedes aegypti known for its exceptional ability to develop resistance to controlled permethrin and lambda-cyhalothrin insecticides pressure using two different concentrations. We analyzed resistance mechanisms that are enhanced at each concentration and used RNA sequencing to identify transcripts specifically associated with these exposure levels. Our objective was to uncover the molecu…
