Therapeutic assessment promotes treatment readiness but does not affect symptom change in patients with personality disorders: findings from a randomized clinical trial.

The field of clinical personality assessment is lacking in published empirical evidence regarding its treatment and clinical utility. This article reports on a randomized controlled clinical trial (N = 74) allocating patients awaiting treatment in a specialized clinic for personality disorders to either 4 sessions of (a) therapeutic assessment (TA) or (b) a structured goal-focused pretreatment intervention (GFPTI). In terms of short-term outcome, TA demonstrated superior ability to raise outcome expectancies and patient perceptions of progress toward treatment (Cohen's d = 0.65 and 0.56, respe…

[Assessment of the premorbid personality in endogenous psychoses. A factor-analytical study of the adjective check list of von Zerssen (author's transl)].

In order to get information about the premorbid personality of patients with endogenous psychosis, we examined the adjective check list of von Zerssen with regard to form and content on a sample of 126 schizophrenic and 31 affective-psychotic patients. The data gathering occured through retrospective evaluation by a close relative of each patient. One aim of the study was the development of a psychometric instrument in order to construct clinically relevant scales, which would allow us to objectify characterizations of the premorbid personality of patients with psychic illness. Another aim was

Assessing the Big Five personality traits in presymptomatic and symptomatic C9orf72-related frontotemporal dementia using the Dutch Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5-NL).

BACKGROUND: C9orf72 is one of the leading causes of genetic FTD. Although neuropsychiatric symptoms are considered a distinctive hallmark, no studies into maladaptive premorbid personality traits have been performed in C9orf72-FTD thus far. METHODS: We investigated differences in self-reported and informant-reported brief version of the Dutch Personality Inventory for the DSM (PID-5-NL) in symptomatic (n = 7) and presymptomatic C9orf72 repeat expansion carriers (C9orf72-REC) (n = 27), and controls (n = 18). We also explored relationships with cognitive performance and neuropsychiatric questio

Assessment of personality traits and severity of depressive symptoms in adolescents experiencing gender dysphoria before and after initiating gender-affirming hormonal interventions.

Hantaviruses are rare but deadly pathogens. New World hantaviruses, primarily present in North and South America, cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome, which leads to death in up to one-third of affected patients. Old World hantaviruses, primarily endemic to Europe and Asia, cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and, dependent on the specific hantavirus, may cause death in up to 15% of patients. A heightened clinical suspicion is important for diagnosis of these conditions because important epidemiologic clues may exist at the time of presentation. A variety of testing modalities ex

Emotional and interpersonal states following dialectical behavioral therapy in adolescent borderline personality disorder: A proof-of-concept ecological momentary assessment outcome study.

Objective: The effects of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) on emotional and interpersonal instability were explored in adolescents exhibiting Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) features, using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to reduce recall bias.Method: N = 28 help-seeking female adolescents were enrolled, meeting ≥ 3 DSM-IV BPD criteria. BPD criteria, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), and depressive symptoms were examined pre- and post-DBT-A treatment (mean duration: 42.74 weeks, SD = 7.46). Participants maintained e-diaries pre- and post-treatment, hourly ratin

Assessment of the association between the personality traits of young patients with acute coronary syndrome and the severity of coronary artery disease.

OBJECTIVE: The role of psychosocial risk factors is becoming increasingly important in the etiology of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The purpose of this study was to assess an association between the personality types of young patients with ACS and the prevalence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: Patients younger than 45 years of age who presented with ACS and who underwent coronary angiography in the period from 2012 to 2016 were included in the study. The coronary angiography records of the patients were examined and their Gensini score (GS) was calculated; GS ≥20 was

Within-Person Associations of Accelerometer-Assessed Physical Activity With Time-Varying Determinants in Older Adults: Time-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of physical activity (PA) interventions, many older adults are still not active enough. This might be partially explained by the often-limited effects of PA interventions. In general, health behavior change interventions often do not focus on contextual and time-varying determinants, which may limit their effectiveness. However, before the dynamic tailoring of interventions can be developed, one should know which time-dependent determinants are associated with PA and how strong these associations are. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine within-

The interplay of personality functioning and affect-event dynamics in predicting future impairment and depression: A large mobile mental health ambulatory assessment study.

Since the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition, and the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases introduced dimensional assessment of personality functioning (PF), PF impairments have been linked to transdiagnostic mental-health risk factors. Using ecological momentary assessment data from 16,038 mental health app users, we tested whether baseline PF impairment, affect-event dynamics, and depression predict future PF impairment and depression severity, hypothesizing a central role of PF. In the first month, users completed 69.3 mood (range 3

Behavioral Signatures in a Situational Judgment Test for Criterion B Borderline Pathology: Predicting Criterion A Personality Functioning Beyond Traditional Questionnaire-Based Trait Assessment.

The DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders assesses personality pathology along two criteria: Criterion A (personality functioning) and criterion B (maladaptive traits). While Criterion B assessment yields valuable insight into overall trait levels, it fails to capture how traits manifest across situations, which is particularly relevant for traits marked by high within-person variability, such as those seen in borderline personality pathology (BPP). To capture this within-person variability, the current study leverages Criterion Profile Analysis to investigate whether behavioral sig

An ICF-CY-based approach to assessing self- and observer-reported functioning in young persons with achondroplasia - development of the pilot version of the Achondroplasia Personal Life Experience Scale (APLES).

PURPOSE: Achondroplasia is the most common disproportionate short stature which impacts patients' well-being. Little is known about the burden of disease in terms of functioning of patients and few disease-specific patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures exist. To understand the consequences of achondroplasia, the objective of the study was to develop an achondroplasia-specific PRO tool. METHOD: Focus group discussions including 34 German patients (age 8-18 years) and 21 parents were conducted and qualitatively analyzed. To identify relevant concepts, statements were coded according to the In

Contextual insights from large language models in ambulatory assessment: Differential reactivity of affect and self-esteem to daily events in borderline personality disorder.

Ambulatory assessment (AA) research often relies on closed-ended context checklists, whereas open-ended event descriptions preserve richer idiographic context but are rarely analyzed at scale. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by marked instability, providing a clinically informative use case for testing scalable approaches to contextual dynamics in daily life. We investigated the association of event context and sentiment (i.e., emotional connotation) derived using a large language model (LLM) with self-reported momentary calmness, affective valence, and self-esteem in a

Differences across service era in a Veterans Affairs assessment clinic: Observations from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF).

Broadband personality measures, such as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) family of instruments, are commonly used as diagnostic aids within the Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system. However, research on how military experiences (i.e., era of service and combat exposure) affect scores on these measures has yielded mixed findings regarding both the magnitude and pattern of symptom profiles. Additionally, concerns remain about the generalizability of these findings, as many studies have drawn samples from similar treatment settings, such as VA PTSD Clinical Teams. Conclu

Social cognition in women with borderline personality disorder based on an exhaustive analysis of the Movie for Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC) categories.

A significant number of borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms are manifested in the interpersonal context. This can be explained by the difficulties in attributing the mental states of oneself and others, which constitutes social cognition. Errors in social cognition are interrelated with the affective, cognitive, impulsive, and interpersonal areas of the person with BPD. The aims of this study was to analyze social cognition in women with BPD compared with a control group and to analyze social cognition in BPD based on BPD symptoms and its severity. To assess social cognition, we use

The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI): Treatment Scales and Interpersonal Characteristics in a Sample of Men Charged with or Convicted of a Sexual Offense.

An individual's interpersonal features are pertinent to treatment within clinical populations. The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) contains two scales that assess the interpersonal features of warmth (WRM) and dominance (DOM), as well as two additional measures to assess to treatment prediction, process, and rejection (RXR; TPI). The current study examined associations between these PAI scales in a sample of 92 men who underwent comprehensive evaluations of sexual behavior after being charged with or convicted of a sexual offense. Analyses indicated that RXR was positively associated wi…

Disentangling emotion processes in borderline personality disorder: physiological and self-reported assessment of biological vulnerability, baseline intensity, and reactivity to emotionally evocative stimuli.

This study investigated M. Linehan's (1993) theory that individuals meeting criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD) have high biological vulnerability to emotion dysregulation, including high baseline emotional intensity and high reactivity to emotionally evocative stimuli. Twenty individuals with BPD, 20 age-matched individuals with generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD), and 20 age-matched normal controls (NCs) participated in 2 separate emotion induction conditions, a standardized condition, and a personally relevant condition. Improving the comparability of momentary affect assessments and accounting for item-specific effects in within-person affect dynamics.

A primary objective of intensive longitudinal studies is to investigate within-person dynamics. In this context, item heterogeneity plays a critical role, as within-person processes may vary across items within a scale. A common example is the assessment of momentary affect using adjective lists (e.g., sad, angry, anxious, stressed), where each item captures different facets of positive or negative affect, providing unique and non-interchangeable information. However, standard practices often overlook item heterogeneity by aggregating item scores or assuming a single within-person factor in dy

Evaluating the accuracy and reliability of telephone-derived Clinical Dementia Rating scores: A comparative analysis with in-person assessments.

INTRODUCTION: The Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scale typically is administered in person, but use of telephone-based, informant-only assessments increased during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The correspondence of informant-only assessments with in-person ratings remains unclear. METHODS: We analyzed 1,140 paired in-person and telephone assessments from the Knight Alzheimer's Disease Research Center Memory and Aging Project conducted within 12 months. Agreement for global CDR and CDR Sum of Boxes (CDR-SB) was examined using kappa statistics, intraclass correlation coeffi

Biomechanical assessment of persons with bilateral transfemoral/through-knee amputations using stubby prostheses: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Stubby prostheses are nonarticulated prostheses used by persons with bilateral transfemoral/through-knee amputations (BTF) either exclusively or alongside full-length articulated prostheses. The implications of stubby prosthesis use on musculoskeletal function and movement patterns are unclear. This study aims to provide insights into the biomechanics of walking with stubbies. METHODS: Gait data were collected using a 10-camera motion capture system from 4 male traumatic BTF who exclusively use stubbies and 4 male traumatic BTF who use multiple prostheses, including stubbies and f
