Anxiety symptoms and disorders among adults living with HIV and AIDS: A critical review and integrative synthesis of the empirical literature.

There are over 35 million people worldwide infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and its progression to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS; WHO, 2014). With the advent of combined antiretroviral therapy (i.e., cART) in 1996, persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) now have much longer life expectancies. However, living with HIV remains challenging, as it is associated with a number of significant and recurrent (chronic) stressors including physical pain, side effects of cART, social stigma, and discrimination, among other social stressors. Presumably, as a result of these typ

Psychiatric aspects of Wilson disease: a review.

OBJECTIVE: To review the current evidence about psychiatric symptoms in Wilson's disease (WD). METHOD: We searched Ovid, PsychInfo, CINHAL and PubMed databases from May 1946 to May 2012 using the key words Wilson('s) disease in combination with psychiatry, psychiatric, psychosis, schizophrenia, depression, mania, bipolar, mood, anxiety, personality and behavior. RESULTS: Psychiatric symptoms occur before, concurrent with or after the diagnosis and treatment for WD. Thirty to forty percent of patients have psychiatric manifestations at the time of diagnosis, and 20% had seen a psychiatrist pr

Developmental dimensions of DSM-III diagnoses in adolescent psychiatric patients.

In a study of the relationship between ego development and DSM-III diagnoses among 140 psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents, it was found that severity of psychiatric diagnosis decreased with increased ego development. Discussion focuses on the need to introduce innovative and empirically valid developmental perspectives into the process of diagnosing children and adolescents who require mental health services.

Anxiety in schizophrenic psychoses.

Anxiety and depression were assessed with self-rating and observer-rating scales on admission and at discharge in 225 inpatients with hebephrenic, catatonic, paranoid or residual schizophrenia. The control subjects were 104 patients with endogenous depression and 63 with anxiety neurosis. The results were also compared with findings for a reference group of 2493 inpatients with a wide range of psychiatric disorders and a representative sample of the general population consisting of 1952 persons. On admission the group of schizophrenic patients was markedly more anxious than the group of health

Convergent validity of alternative MMPI-2 personality disorder scales.

The Morey, Waugh, and Blashfield (1985) MMPI (Hathaway et al., 1989) personality disorder scales provided a significant contribution to personality disorder research and assessment. However, the subsequent revisions to the MMPI and the multiple revisions to the diagnostic criteria sets that have since occurred may have justified comparable revisions to these scales. Somwaru and Ben-Porath (1995) selected a substantially different set of items from the MMPI-2 (Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989) to assess Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; America

Family history of psychiatric illness as a risk factor for schizoaffective disorder: a Danish register-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Schizoaffective disorder may be related to both schizophrenia and bipolar disorders, but no population-based studies, to our knowledge, have investigated this association in families. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether a psychiatric history of schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia among parents and siblings is a risk factor for developing a schizoaffective disorder, and whether a specific pattern of family history of psychiatric illness exists in persons with schizoaffective disorder compared with persons with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. DESIGN: Regist

Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and a Biopsychosocial Model of Borderline Personality Disorder.

This review offers a critique of recent attempts to reconceptualize some cases of borderline personality disorder (BPD) within the newer diagnosis of complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). The CPTSD construct focuses on the role of childhood trauma in shaping relational problems in adulthood, difficulties that have been previously seen as features of a personality disorder. The CPTSD model fails to consider the role of heritable personality traits, as well as a broader range of psychosocial risk factors. This review proposes that a biopsychosocial model of BPD is more comprehensive, ta

Psychiatric disorders in patients with essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that a consistent proportion of patients with Essential Tremor may have psychiatric disorders but it is unclear whether these disorders are increased in frequency as compared to healthy subjects. METHODS: In a case-control study, we adopted the structured interviews for DSM-IV, SCID-I and SCID-II, to investigate psychiatric and personality disorders in 37 ET patients and 34 healthy subjects. As cognitive changes in ET may be a confounding factor we enrolled patients and healthy control subjects without cognitive dysfunction. RESULTS: SCID-I showed t

Childhood Maltreatment as Predictor of Pathological Personality Traits Using PSY-5 in an Adult Psychiatric Sample.

Extant literature indicates that childhood maltreatment is significantly associated with personality disorders. With the recent call for a more dimensional approach to understanding personality and pathological personality traits, the aim of the present study was to examine whether the experience of childhood maltreatment is associated with pathological personality traits as measured by the Personality Psychopathology Five (PSY-5). We analyzed data from 557 adult psychiatric patients with diverse psychiatric diagnoses, including mood disorders, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and anxiety dis

Personality characteristics and disorders in multiple sclerosis patients: assessment and treatment.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a major inflammatory and demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Although a significant incidence and prevalence of psychological disorders in MS has been reported there is limited data on the prevalence of personality disorders (PD) in these patients. Recent findings indicate the need for early diagnosis and treatment of PD in MS patients in the interests of prognosis, conformity to treatment and patient's quality of life improvement. This article summarizes existing evidence on prevalence, types and diagnostic criteria of PD in MS, clinical manifestati

Expression Study of NDUFS1, NDUFV1, and NDUFV2 in Schizophrenia and Paranoid Personality Disorder : Role of Mitochondrial Complex I in SCZ and PPD.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a major psychiatric disorder with unclear etiology and biological diagnosis. Paranoid personality disorder (PPD) is a type-A personality disorder characterized by paranoia and generalized mistrust. The etiology and molecular mechanisms of SCZ and PPD are not clarified. The present study aimed to examine the expression alteration of three major genes of mitochondrial complex I in the peripheral blood of patients with SCZ and PPD, and its correlations with clinical features of patients, especially the five major personality traits. Psychiatric evaluation of the dermatology patient.

Over one third of dermatologic disorders have significant psychiatric comorbidity. The impact of the skin disorder on quality of life, the role of psychosocial stressors, and use of substances should be assessed. Major depressive disorder is the most frequently encountered psychiatric disorder in dermatology and is often associated with suicide risk. Other psychiatric syndromes comorbid with dermatologic disorders include obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, posttraumatic stress disorder associated with dissociation and conversion symptoms, body image pathologies, delusional disorder,

The comorbidity of DSM-III-R personality disorders in somatization disorder.

In order to understand psychiatric factors that complicate the medical management of somatizing patients, 94 subjects with known somatization disorder (SD) were evaluated for 13 personality disorders with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders. Referred from multiple primary care settings, the patient sample was predominantly female (85%), married (67%), high school graduates (64%), and had a mean age of 43. Structured interviews documented that 23.4% of SD patients had one personality disorder, and 37.2% had two or more disorders. The four most frequently identi

The vulnerable adult in police custody: lessons learned from the case of R v Paul James Aspinall.

This case review highlights some of the problems that vulnerable adults, especially those with a mental disorder as defined in section 1 (2) of the Mental Health Act 1983, face in police custody. These service users already experience some form of discrimination within the wider society in terms of access to community services. The role of the appropriate adult in providing support to the person in custody is fundamental, as enshrined in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 Code of Practice. It is one of the important safeguards of the legislation often referred to as a 'gateway safeguard

Personality disorders and culture: contemporary clinical views (Part B).

This article reviews the basic concepts surrounding the clinical relationships between culture and personality disorders (PDs). Part A of this article, which appeared in Cultural Diversity and Mental Health, Vol. 1, No. 1, pp 3-17 (1995), examined the interpretive/explanatory and pathogenic/ pathoplastic roles of culture. Herein, culture's role as a diagnostic/nosological factor is discussed through the use of measurement instruments and the cultural formulation included in DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). In addition to these three roles, some authors would also consider a the

How Much Training Do We Need? Assessing the Validity and Interrater Reliability of the PDM-2's Psychodiagnostic Chart among Less Experienced Clinicians.

The Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual - Second Edition (PDM-2) has emerging evidence supporting its clinical utility, yet one of the main limitations remains the conjecture that considerable training and experience is required. It also remains unclear how the PDM-2 framework compares with current DSM measures of personality pathology such as the Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS). The aim of the present study is to examine these issues by testing whether less clinically experienced second year doctoral psychology students are able to reliably assess patients' level of personality path
