Reduced intraocular pressure after phacoemulsification and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation.

PURPOSE: To ascertain whether phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation causes long-term reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP). SETTING: Private practice, Kempten, Germany. METHODS: Intraocular pressure was measured in both eyes of 120 consecutive patients who were unilaterally phakic after phacoemulsification a mean of 17 months +/- 17 (SD) previously. Mean age of the 36 men and 84 women was 76 +/- 10 years. Data were analyzed using binomial distribution and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS: The median ratio of IOP in the pseudophakic eye to IOP…

Development of Postoperative Ocular Hypertension After Phacoemulsification for Removal of Cataracts in Dogs.

A cataract is a disease in which the lens of the eye becomes clouded, causing a partial or complete loss of vision. Phacoemulsification (PHACO) is a modern surgical technique used in cataract surgery. Study findings: This study observed changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) after surgery in 31 dogs (48 eyes) with cataracts that visited a veterinary hospital. The procedure involved a lens extraction by PHACO and the implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). Postoperative ocular hypertension (POH) was defined as a postoperative IOP of 25 mmHg or higher. To assess changes in IOP, IOP measurement…

Rapid contraction of the anterior capsule after phacoemulsification in uveitis: A case report.

RATIONALE: While capsular contraction syndrome (CCS) typically develops months after cataract surgery, its potential for rapid progression in uveitis patients remains poorly characterized. This case addresses the critical knowledge gap regarding ultra-early-onset CCS and its diagnostic challenges in inflammatory eye disease. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 63-year-old male with controlled uveitis reported rapidly worsening blurred vision (15 days postphacoemulsification) despite initially good postoperative visual acuity (0.4 at 1 week). The vision deteriorated to hand motion at 10 cm, unresponsive to an…

Comparisons of the energy efficiency and intraocular safety of two torsional phacoemulsification tips.

BACKGROUND: During cataract phacoemulsification surgery, an Intrepid® balanced (IB) tip can achieve a larger amplitude, which may lead to higher energy efficiency than a Kelman (K) tip when paired with a torsional phaco platform. In this retrospective cohort study, we compared their energy efficiency and damage to the cornea under a new energy setting. METHODS: The medical records of 104 eyes of 79 patients were reviewed, with 47 eyes belonging to the IB group and 57 eyes belonging to the K group. All surgeries were performed on an Alcon Centurion® platform with gravity infiltration. Surgical…

Phacoemulsification in patients with corneal opacities using slit illumination of the surgical microscope.

Performing phacoemulsification in eyes with corneal opacities is challenging even with expert surgeons. Several techniques have been described to improve intraoperative visualization through opacified corneas. This retrospective interventional case series included 10 eyes of 10 patients with coexisting senile cataract and corneal opacity who underwent phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation under slit illumination of the surgical microscope. Uneventful phacoemulsification with IOL implantation was achieved in all eyes without intraoperative complications. Slit illumination…
