A 72-year-old woman in good general health presented a massive intestinal and colonic ischemia with rapid post-operative death, due to mesenteric inflammatory veno-occlusive disease. Mesenteric inflammatory veno-occlusive disease, first described in 1994, is a vasculitis of unknown etiology limited to the mesenteric area, affecting exclusively veins and venules and sparing arteries. Histologically, there are acute lesions of lymphocytic and/or necrotizing, sometimes granulomatous phlebitis and chronic lesions of myointimal hyperplasia reducing the lumen of the veins. In this case, polymorphonu…

The sensitizing capacity of Centella asiatica (raw extract) and its triterpenic constituents asiaticoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid has been studied in guinea pigs. The extract itself as well as the 3 acids were found to be very weak sensitizers. Centella asiatica extract is used effectively in the treatment of keloids, leg ulcers, phlebitis, slow-healing wounds, leprosy, surgical lesions, striae distensae and cellulitis. Although applied frequently to damaged skin, the risk of acquiring contact sensitivity to this plant or its constituents is low.

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2025eng
A 4.5-month-old female intact Doberman was referred for acute on chronic gastrointestinal signs and acute lethargy, polyuria, and polydipsia. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed marked focal dilatation, thrombosis, and suspect phlebitis of the caudal vena cava (CVC; renal segment). The prehepatic CVC was not identified; however, an enlarged azygos vein was identified as cranial to the dilated vessel. The patient was humanely euthanized, and a necropsy confirmed congenital segmental aplasia of the prehepatic CVC with azygos continuation complicated by thrombophlebitis. While this vascular malfor…

The monthly incidence of deep vein thrombosis during pregnancy varies from 0.1 to 0.8 per 1000 pregnancies, depending on the study. These figures are undoubtedly an underestimation because they were determined from clinical events with no estimation of asymptomatic forms which, in general, increase the prevalence about 3-fold. Although the absolute figures are reliable, the consequences in terms of maternal mortality and post-phlebitis sequelae warrant the careful attention paid to this condition. Moreover, it should be recalled that the prevalence of superficial venous thrombosis is similar a…

The cases of three patients with an atrophic lipophagic granulomatous lipoatrophy are described and compared with 14 similar cases in the literature. In affected children erythematous lesions of the arms and legs usually occur, after which subcutaneous atrophy develops. Fever and edema are common. The histologic feature is a replacement of the fat lobule by lipophagic histiocytes and giant cells. No vasculitis or phlebitis is present. Previously, such cases have been called Weber-Christian disease or Rothmann-Makai syndrome, but they are best characterized by the distinctive clinical lesions, …

During 5 1/2 years all infections arising in the hospital (nosocomial infections) were registered prospectively by an infection control nurse. The incidence of all nosocomial infections in 3192 maternity patients was 2.1%. In 10,569 women following vaginal deliveries 2.6% and in 1,353 women following Caesarean section 21.1%. The commonest infections were urinary tract infections, endometritis, infections of the abdominal wound or the episiotomy, and a phlebitis of the intravenous infusion site. Measures to prevent infection resulted in a steadily decreasing incidence of infections during the 6…

The occurrence of thrombosis and phlebitis after intravenous injection of 10 mg diazepam, 4 mg lorazepam, or 1-2 mg flunitrazepam was studied on the second or third and the seventh to 10th days. A significantly higher incidence occurred with all drugs on days 7 to 10 than on days 2 and 3. Painless thrombosis occurred much more often with diazepam than with the other two benzodiazepines. Its incidence was greater in small hand or arm veins than in large antecubital vessels. Lorazepam and flunitrazepam therefore have clear advantages over diazepam.

Intravenous miconazole, an investigational, broad-spectrum, antifungal imidazole drug, was clinically effective when used for the first time in a patient with life-threatening sporotrichosis. Miconazole was used after drug resistance and treatment failure occurred in a patient with extensive, cavitary, pulmonary infection with Sporotrichum schenckii. He had first been treated with amphotericin B, and then with amphotericin B and flucytosine in combination. Side effects of miconazole included itching, diarrhea, and phlebitis. Clinical improvement occurred despite plasma concentrations below tho…

Introduction: Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) related disease is a localized or multisystem chronic inflammatory disease with characteristic pathol … aluated using the histopathological scoring criteria which include storiform fibrosis, obliterative phlebitis, plasmacytic infiltrates, and lymphoid follicles. Immunohistochemistry with IgG4 was performed on all these lesions. Results: There were twelve patients with IgG4-RD involving the retroperitoneum, pancreas, lymph node, and nasal sinuses. Lesions inv …

MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: All dogs in the heparinized saline and 0.9% sodium chloride group had catheters that flushed easily at each evaluation point. More dogs in the saline group had catheters from which blood could not be aspirated, but t …

Immunoglobulin G4-related systemic disease (IgG4-RSD) is a recently defined emerging entity characterized by a diffuse or mass forming inflammatory reaction rich in IgG4-positive plasma cells associated with fibrosclerosis and obliterative phlebitis. IgG4-RSD usually affects middle aged and elderly patients, with a male predominance. It is associated with an elevated serum titer of IgG4, which acts as a marker for this recently characterized entity. The prototype is IgG4-related sclerosing pancreatitis or autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). Other common sites of involvement are the hepatobiliary tr…

Many cases of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease involving different organ systems have been reported in the literature since the disorder was first described in patients with sclerosing pancreatitis. This report discusses an interesting case of IgG4-related cardiovascular disease that involved the pericardium and resulted in reoccurring chest pain in a 36-year-old man. The challenging diagnosis was made using established diagnostic criteria for other tissue sites and included the presence of elevated serum IgG4, pericardial infiltration by IgG4-positive plasma cells, focal phlebitis, an…
