Hyperbolic Shear Plasmon Polaritons in a Twisted Anisotropic 2D Material.

Hyperbolic shear polaritons, recently discovered in infrared (IR) phononic systems, offer enhanced directionality and subwavelength confinement. This Letter proposes a strategy for realizing hyperbolic shear plasmon polaritons (HSPPs) in natural two-dimensional (2D) materials with time-reversal symmetry, thereby extending their operation beyond the IR range. We reveal that twisting a 2D material on an anisotropic substrate creates nondiagonalizable transverse conductivity components, leading to wave vector misalignment and the associated asymmetric loss in HSPPs. Furthermore, we highlight the

Observation of Dirac Charge-Density Waves in Bi2Te2Se.

While parallel segments in the Fermi level contours, often found at the surfaces of topological insulators (TIs), would imply "strong" nesting conditions, the existence of charge-density waves (CDWs)-periodic modulations of the electron density-has not been verified up to now. Here, we report the observation of a CDW at the surface of the TI Bi2Te2Se(111), below ≈350K, by helium-atom scattering and, thus, experimental evidence for a CDW involving Dirac topological electrons. Deviations of the order parameter observed below 180K, and a low-temperature break of time reversal symmetry, suggest th

Experimental signature of a topological quantum dot.

Topological insulator nanoparticles (TINPs) host topologically protected Dirac surface states, just like their bulk counterparts. For TINPs of radius <100 nm, quantum confinement on the surface results in the discretization of the Dirac cone. This system of discrete energy levels is referred to as a topological quantum dot (TQD) with energy level spacing on the order of Terahertz (THz), which is tunable with material-type and particle size. The presence of these discretized energy levels in turn leads to a new electron-mediated phonon-light coupling in the THz range, and the resulting mode can

Is the Presence of Sn2+ a Crucial Factor for the Generation of Low Thermal Conductivity in Tin-Based Sulfides?

Comprehending the relationship between crystal structures and transport properties is crucial to develop materials with improved electrical … . By combining experiments including X-ray diffraction with ab initio calculations of electrons and phonons, we succeeded to elucidate the origin of the low thermal conductivity in Cr2Sn3S7. We demonstrate that the low dimensionality of the [Sn4S3]2+ chains, which generates weak Sn···S interactions with the 3D host lattice, is induced by the lone pair ste …

Controlling Magnetism with Light in a Zero Orbital Angular Momentum Antiferromagnet.

Antiferromagnetic materials feature intrinsic ultrafast spin dynamics, making them ideal candidates for future magnonic devices operating at THz frequencies. A major focus of current research is the investigation of optical methods for the efficient generation of coherent magnons in antiferromagnetic insulators. In magnetic lattices endowed with orbital angular momentum, spin-orbit coupling enables spin dynamics through the resonant excitation of low-energy electric dipoles such as phonons and orbital resonances which interact with spins. However, in magnetic systems with zero orbital angular …

Changes in intra-nuclear mechanics in response to DNA damaging agents revealed by time-domain Brillouin micro-spectroscopy.

How DNA damage and repair processes affect the biomechanical properties of the nucleus interior remains unknown. Here, an opto-acoustic microscope based on time-domain Brillouin spectroscopy (TDBS) was used to investigate the induced regulation of intra-nuclear mechanics. With this ultrafast pump-probe technique, coherent acoustic phonons were tracked along their propagation in the intra-nucleus nanostructure and the complex stiffness moduli and thicknesses were measured with an optical resolution. Osteosarcoma cells were exposed to methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) and the presence of DNA damage …

Flatband polaritonic router in twisted bilayer van der Waals materials.

In recent years, van der Waals (vdW) polaritons excited by the hybrid of matter and photons have shown great promise for applications in nanoimaging, biosensing, and on-chip light guiding. In particular, polaritons with a flatband dispersion allow for mode canalization and diffractionless propagation, which showcase advantages for on-chip technologies requiring long-range transportation of optical information. Here, we propose a flatband polaritonic router based on twisted α-MoO3 bilayers, which allows for on-chip routing of highly confined and low-loss phonon polaritons (PhPs) along multichan

Biexcitonic fine structure of CdSe nanocrystals probed by polarization-dependent two-dimensional photon echo spectroscopy.

The spectroscopy of colloidal CdSe nanocrystals is investigated using two-dimensional photon echo (2DPE) spectroscopy with copolarized and cross-polarized pulse sequences. Clearly resolved excited state absorption features are observed to beat at the frequency of the longitudinal-optical phonon, and the phase of this beating is found to be polarization-dependent. A simulation is performed using the excitonic and biexcitionic fine structure states predicted by theory, and the polarization-dependent beating allows each feature to be assigned to a particular excited state absorption pathway. Temperature dependence of excitonic radiative decay in CdSe quantum dots: the role of surface hole traps.

Using atomistic, semiempirical pseudopotential calculations, we show that if one assumes the simplest form of a surface state in a CdSe nanocrystal--an unpassivated surface anion site--one can explain theoretically several puzzling aspects regarding the observed temperature dependence of the radiative decay of excitons. In particular, our calculations show that the presence of surface states leads to a mixing of the dark and bright exciton states, resulting in a decrease of 3 orders of magnitude of the dark-exciton radiative lifetime. This result explains the persistence of the zero-phonon emi

Reduced hot-electron energy-loss rate induced by finite-square confinement potential in GaN/AlN, GaAs/AlAs, and GaSb/InAs nanostructured materials.

This study offers a thorough and systematic examination of the hot electron energy-loss rate (ELR) within GaSb/InAs, GaAs/AlAs, and GaN/AlN finite-square geometrical QWs owing to electron-longitudinal optical (LO)-phonon coupling via the Fröhlich interaction under a quantizing magnetic field by using the electron-temperature-based formalism. Synchronously, the findings obtained in these GaSb/InAs, GaAs/AlAs, and GaN/AlN finite-depth-well confinement layers are compared to infinite-depth-well counterparts. The primary outcomes are derived as the following: the analytical formulation governing t

Novel hybrid monolayers SixGeySn1-x-y: first principles study of structural, electronic, optical, and electron transport properties with NH3 sensing application.

The structural, electronic, optical, and electron transport properties of three different atomically thin novel hybrid monolayers comprising of Si, Ge, and Sn atoms in varying proportions are studied using first principles calculations within the framework of density functional theory. The fabrication of similar hybrid materials is practically realizable but the different properties of these novel monolayers are yet to be explored. The proposed hybrid buckled honeycomb monolayers with sp2-sp3 like orbital hybridization are mechanically and dynamically stable, confirmed by the analysis of in-pl

Real-Space Hybrid Topological Singularities in Structured Elastic Waves.

Real-space singularities govern a broad spectrum of wave phenomena, yet they remain largely unexplored in elastic wave systems. Here, we report hybrid topological singularities that emerge on the surfaces of finite-sized solids due to the full vectorial character of elastic waves. These textures fuse spin-field singularities with displacement-field singularities and exhibit unique nonpairwise topological charge dynamics. Moreover, a subset of these singularities imprint dislocation lines onto the radiated acoustic field, generating robust acoustic vortices in free space from an otherwise achir

Frequency-dependent topological polaritons in carbon nanotube array/hBN heterostructures.

Plasmons in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted significant attention due to their strong spatial confinement and high-quality factors. However, constrained by CNTs' intrinsic electronic characteristics, modulation of their plasmon dispersion relations remains a significant challenge. Here, we report frequency-dependent topological polaritons arising from the coupling between hyperbolic plasmons and phonon polaritons in CNT-array/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures. In particular, we achieved a controllable topological transition of the polariton wavefront from hyperbolic to elli

Emergent Majorana zero-modes in an intrinsic anti-ferromagnetic topological superconductor Mn2B2 monolayer.

Topological superconductors (TSCs) are an exotic field due to the existence of Majorana zero-modes (MZM) in the edge states that obey non-Abelian statistics and can be used to implement topological quantum computations, especially for two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here we predict manganese diboride (Mn2B2) as an intrinsic 2D anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) TSC based on the magnetic and electronic structures of Mn and B atoms. Once Mn2B2 ML enters a superconducting state, MZM will be induced by the spin-polarized helical gapless edge states. The Z2 topological non-trivial properties are confirmed by

Synergistic Effect of Chemical Substitution and Insertion on the Thermoelectric Performance of Cu26V2Ge6S32 Colusite.

Copper-based sulfides are promising materials for thermoelectric applications, which can convert waste heat into electricity. This study reports the enhanced thermoelectric performance of Cu26V2Ge6S32 colusite via substitution of antimony (Sb) for germanium (Ge) and introduction of copper (Cu) as an interstitial atom. The crystal structure of the solid solutions and Cu-rich compounds were analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Both chemical approaches decrease the hole carrier concentration, which leads to a reduction in the electronic thermal condu

Raman and ROA spectra of (-)- and (+)-2-Br-hexahelicene: experimental and DFT studies of a π-conjugated chiral system.

The Raman optical activity (ROA) spectra of both enantiomers of 2-Br-hexahelicene in chloroform solution have been measured in the range 1700-300 cm(-1). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations accurately reproduce the observed features. The most intense ROA features are also the most intense Raman features, in the region 1350-1400 cm(-1), and correspond to the so-called D-modes, which play a major role in coronene and other PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). Together with a detailed analysis of the normal mode structure, the polarizability tensors for the intense Raman features are

A hypothetical mathematical construct explaining the mechanism of biological amplification in an experimental model utilizing picoTesla (PT) electromagnetic fields.

In considering the hydrophobicity of intramembranous protein (IMP) H-bonds which cross the phospholipid bilayer of plasma membranes, and the necessity for photonic recycling in cell surface interactions after dissipation of energetic states, present models lack structure and thermodynamic properties to maintain (DeltaE) sufficient energy sources necessary for amplifications by factors of 10(12).
