The Neural Signature of Social Dominance Discrimination by Means of Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation.

Hierarchy is a pervasive feature of social organization. The ability to rapidly discriminate hierarchical information is critical for social interaction. Here, we took advantage of a special technique in electroencephalography (EEG) known as fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS). We used this technique, which captures the automatic perception of faces, to explore the neural signature of social dominance discrimination. A stream of computer-generated faces was presented at 6 Hz, i.e. six faces/second. In the experimental condition, faces alternated from high to low social dominance within a s

Altered visual population receptive fields in human albinism.

Albinism is a congenital disorder where misrouting of the optic nerves at the chiasm gives rise to abnormal visual field representations in occipital cortex. In typical human development, the left occipital cortex receives retinal input predominantly from the right visual field, and vice-versa. In albinism, there is a more complete decussation of optic nerve fibers at the chiasm, resulting in partial representation of the temporal hemiretina (ipsilateral visual field) in the contralateral hemisphere. In this study, we characterize the receptive field properties for these abnormal representatio

The haptic and the visual flash-lag effect and the role of flash characteristics.

When a short flash occurs in spatial alignment with a moving object, the moving object is seen ahead the stationary one. Similar to this visual "flash-lag effect" (FLE) it has been recently observed for the haptic sense that participants judge a moving hand to be ahead a stationary hand when judged at the moment of a short vibration ("haptic flash") that is applied when the two hands are spatially aligned. We further investigated the haptic FLE. First, we compared participants' performance in two isosensory visual or haptic conditions, in which moving object and flash were presented only in a

Is Trypophobia a Phobia?

In the past 10 years, thousands of people have claimed to be affected by trypophobia, which is the fear of objects with small holes. Recent research suggests that people do not fear the holes; rather, images of clustered holes, which share basic visual characteristics with venomous organisms, lead to nonconscious fear. In the present study, both self-reported measures and the Preschool Single Category Implicit Association Test were adapted for use with preschoolers to investigate whether discomfort related to trypophobic stimuli was grounded in their visual features or based on a nonconsciousl

Monitoring physiology and behavior using Android in phobias.

In this paper, we present an Android-based system Application - AWARE - for the assessment of the person's physiology and behavior outside of the laboratory. To accomplish this purpose, AWARE delivers context dependent audio-visual stimuli, embedded into the subject's real-world perception, via marker/vision-based augmented reality (AR) technology. In addition, it employs external measuring resources connected via Bluetooth, as well as the smartphone's integrated resources. It synchronously acquires the experiment's video (camera input with AR overlay), physiologic responses (with a dedicated

Exploring the world with Bálint syndrome: biased bottom-up guidance of gaze by local saliency differences.

Bálint syndrome is a combination of severe deficits affecting spatial attention, visuo-motor control and oculomotor function. While the severe restriction of attention (simultanagnosia) and impairments of visually guided reaching have been extensively studied, oculomotor apraxia has received comparatively little attention. The main explanatory hypothesis of oculomotor apraxia is that it is a direct consequence of the severe restriction of attention. Here, we examined in a patient with Bálint syndrome to what extent local image features such as luminance and contrast predict whether a region wi

Chronodependency and provocative factors in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.

In juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), occurrence of seizures and epileptiform EEG discharges is influenced by internal and external factors. The most important internal factor is the chronodependency: the occurrence of myoclonic jerks in the early morning is one of the hallmarks of JME. Approximately two-thirds of the patients with JME report that seizures are provoked by a variety of general factors like stress, fatigue, fever, and sleep and more specific precipitants like flashing sunlight, music, reading, thinking, and excess alcohol. The prevalence rate of photosensitivity (photoparoxysmal

Perisaccadic remapping and rescaling of visual responses in macaque superior colliculus.

Visual neurons have spatial receptive fields that encode the positions of objects relative to the fovea. Because foveate animals execute frequent saccadic eye movements, this position information is constantly changing, even though the visual world is generally stationary. Interestingly, visual receptive fields in many brain regions have been found to exhibit changes in strength, size, or position around the time of each saccade, and these changes have often been suggested to be involved in the maintenance of perceptual stability. Crucial to the circuitry underlying perisaccadic changes in vis

Modulation of shifting receptive field activity in frontal eye field by visual salience.

In the monkey frontal eye field (FEF), the sensitivity of some neurons to visual stimulation changes just before a saccade. Sensitivity shifts from the spatial location of its current receptive field (RF) to the location of that field after the saccade is completed (the future field, FF). These shifting RFs are thought to contribute to the stability of visual perception across saccades, and in this study we investigated whether the salience of the FF stimulus alters the magnitude of FF activity. We reduced the salience of the usually single flashed stimulus by adding other visual stimuli. We i

The role of gamma-band activity in the representation of faces: reduced activity in the fusiform face area in congenital prosopagnosia.

BACKGROUND: Congenital prosopagnosia (CP) describes an impairment in face processing that is presumably present from birth. The neuronal correlates of this dysfunction are still under debate. In the current paper, we investigate high-frequent oscillatory activity in response to faces in persons with CP. Such neuronal activity is thought to reflect higher-level representations for faces. METHODOLOGY: Source localization of induced Gamma-Band Responses (iGBR) measured by magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to establish the origin of oscillatory activity in response to famous and unknown faces

Compensatory strategies following visual search training in patients with homonymous hemianopia: an eye movement study.

A total of 29 patients with homonymous visual field defects without neglect practised visual search in 20 daily sessions, over a period of 4 weeks. Patients searched for a single randomly positioned target amongst distractors displayed for 3 s. After training patients demonstrated significantly shorter reaction times for search stimuli (Pambakian et al. in J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 75:1443-1448, 2004). In this study, patients achieved improved search efficiency after training by altering their oculomotor behaviour in the following ways: (1) patients directed a higher proportion of fixation

Rapidly learned stimulus expectations alter perception of motion.

Expectations broadly influence our experience of the world. However, the process by which they are acquired and then shape our sensory experiences is not well understood. Here, we examined whether expectations of simple stimulus features can be developed implicitly through a fast statistical learning procedure. We found that participants quickly and automatically developed expectations for the most frequently presented directions of motion and that this altered their perception of new motion directions, inducing attractive biases in the perceived direction as well as visual hallucinations in t

Cortical triggers in generalized reflex seizures and epilepsies.

Activation of specific cortical territories by sensory stimuli or of less restricted areas of the brain by cognitive stimuli is known to induce apparently generalized seizures in predisposed patients; this is clinically and electroencephalographically distinct from reflex triggering of partial seizures. Photosensitive patients may have seizures when exposed to environmental stimuli producing appropriate flickering light or geometric patterns. Some children with benign myoclonic epilepsy in infancy have seizures triggered by unexpected touch or noise. Seizures induced by thinking have been repo

The motion-induced position shift depends on the perceived direction of bistable quartet motion.

Motion can influence the perceived position of nearby stationary objects (Nature Neuroscience 3 (2000) 954). To investigate the influence of high-level motion processes on the position shift while controlling for low-level motion signals, we measured the position shift as a function of the motion seen in a bistable quartet. In this stimulus, motion can be seen along either one or the other of two possible paths. An illusory position shift was observed only when the flashes were adjacent to the path where motion was perceived. If the flash was adjacent to the other path, where no motion was per

Interaction of retinal image and eye velocity in motion perception.

When we move our eyes, why does the world look stable even as its image flows across our retinas, and why do afterimages, which are stationary on the retinas, appear to move? Current theories say this is because we perceive motion by summation: if an object slips across the retina at r degrees/s while the eye turns at e degrees/s, the object's perceived velocity in space should be r + e. We show that activity in MT+, the visual-motion complex in human cortex, does reflect a mix of r and e rather than r alone. But we show also that, for optimal perception, r and e should not summate; rather, th

Motion adaptation distorts perceived visual position.

After an observer adapts to a moving stimulus, texture within a stationary stimulus is perceived to drift in the opposite direction-the traditional motion aftereffect (MAE). It has recently been shown that the perceived position of objects can be markedly influenced by motion adaptation. In the present study, we examine the selectivity of positional shifts resulting from motion adaptation to stimulus attributes such as velocity, relative contrast, and relative spatial frequency. In addition, we ask whether spatial position can be modified in the absence of perceived motion. Results show that w

On the use of the Ternus test to assess magnocellular function.

Ternus stimuli give rise to two mutually exclusive visual experiences: with long interstimulus intervals (ISIs) the elements in the stimulus are perceived as moving together as a group ('group movement'), while at shorter ISIs only a single element appears to be moving ('element movement' or 'end-to-end movement'). It has been hypothesized that group and element movements, respectively, reflect magnocellular and parvocellular activity. On this basis, Ternus tests have been used to assess magnocellular function in dyslexic individuals. This use of Ternus stimuli is examined in the present repor

A cortical locus for the processing of contrast-defined contours.

Object boundaries in the natural environment are often defined by changes in luminance; in other cases, however, there may be no difference in average luminance across the boundary, which is instead defined by more subtle 'second-order' cues, such as changes in the contrast of a fine-grained texture. The detection of luminance boundaries may be readily explained in terms of visual cortical neurons, which compute the linear sum of the excitatory and inhibitory inputs to different parts of their receptive field. The detection of second-order stimuli is less well understood, but is thought to inv

Reflex epilepsy in the Papio-papio baboon, particularly photosensitive epilepsy.

Papio-papio baboons may present two types of reflex paroxysmal manifestations: --Myoclonia and generalized seizures are induced by intermittent light stimulation in predisposed animals; this photosensitive epilepsy resembles that observed in some human patients; it involves mainly the cerebral cortex during myoclonia which are accompanied by EEG paroxysmal discharges, and the mesencephalic reticular formation during seizures; --Myoclonia of a different type, never accompanied by EEG paroxysmal discharged and never evolving into seizures, may occur during movement or agitation of predisposed an
