Characteristics of child physical abuse cases that are referred by the police for a clinical forensic medical examination.

In child physical abuse cases, a clinical forensic medical examination (CFME) is performed to document medical evidence, such as lesions and scars. In Denmark, however, not all cases are referred by the police to a CFME, and we aimed to study the key characteristics of police reported cases of child physical abuse (N = 136, ages 4-17 years) - case context, the child's disclosure and sociodemographic factors - that could influence the police's selection process. Associations between case characteristics and CFME referrals were studied using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models

Examining the physical and psychological effects of combining multimodal feedback with continuous control in prosthetic hands.

Myoelectric prosthetic hands are typically controlled to move between discrete positions and do not provide sensory feedback to the user. In this work, we present and evaluate a closed-loop, continuous myoelectric prosthetic hand controller, that can continuously control the position of multiple degrees of freedom of a prosthesis while rendering proprioceptive feedback to the user via a haptic feedback armband. Twenty-eight participants without and ten participants with upper limb difference (ULD) were recruited to holistically evaluate the physical and psychological effects of the controller

Examining Barriers and Facilitators to Physical Activity Among a Diverse Cohort of MSM Living with HIV.

Owing to extensive innovations in HIV treatment and care, research attention has shifted to maintaining and improving health instead of survival. Physical activity (PA) is an area of growing focus and importance among people living with HIV (PWH). However, there remains a paucity of research exploring PA within diverse groups of PWH. The current study aims to address this gap in a cohort of men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV. Using data from a longitudinal cohort (= 271 at baseline and = 168 at the 6-month follow-up), this study examines factors (e.g., pain, sleep, mental health,

A study of the relationship between serum asprosin levels and MAFLD in a population undergoing physical examination.

Asprosin, an adipokine, was recently discovered in 2016. Here, the correlation between asprosin and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was examined by quantitatively assessing hepatic steatosis using transient elastography and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). According to body mass index (BMI), 1276 adult participants were enrolled and categorized into three groups: normal, overweight, and obese. The study collected and evaluated serum asprosin levels, general biochemical indices, liver stiffness measure, and CAP via statistical analysis. In both overweight and obese group

Accuracy of physical examination of cardiovascular system in the diagnosis of common congenital heart diseases in children.

BACKGROUND: It is widely perceived that the value of physical examination in paediatric cardiology has diminished with the increasing availability of echocardiography. The accuracy of physical examination of cardiovascular system in children has not been systematically tested. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional, diagnostic accuracy study from the paediatric cardiology clinic of a tertiary referral hospital in South India. A total of 545 children with 5 common cardiac conditions were included-normal heart, atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, ventricular septal defect (VSD) and VSD …

Winter of our contentment: Examining risk, pleasure, and emplacement in later-life physical activity.

In the West, many in the media and the health sector emphasize physical activity as important for the old, so that they can circumvent the impacts of aging and the associated costs. At the same time, neoliberal health discourse advises older people to avoid activities that may cause injuries, such as slips and falls, creating contradictions for older people who participate in sports on ice. In light of these mixed messages, this paper explores how older men understand their bodies through their participation in the seemingly risky sport of ice hockey. I conducted eighteen semi-structured inter

Sexual victimization of youth with a physical disability: an examination of prevalence rates, and risk and protective factors.

Children with disabilities have been shown to be at greater risk of victimization than those without. Although much of the research combines disability of any type into a single disability category, recent evidence suggests that not all types of disabilities are equally associated with victimization. To date, little knowledge exists about the victimization of youth with physical disabilities. This study used data from a national school-based survey of adolescents (n = 6,749, mean age = 15.41, SD = .66) in Switzerland to investigate sexual victimization (SV) among physically disabled youth. Accuracy of physical examination and intra-access pressure in the detection of stenosis in hemodialysis arteriovenous fistula.

Both physical examination (PE) and intra-access pressure (IAP) measurements have been used in the identification of stenosis in an arteriovenous access. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of PE and IAP in the diagnosis of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) stenosis. A total of 84 patients were enrolled in the study (54% men, mean age of 50.7 +/- 12.7 years and mean AVF patency of 24.9 +/- 7.8 months, 52% radiocephalic). Abnormalities of pulse and thrill were used as the diagnostic tools for the detection of stenosis using the physical examination. For IAP, stenosis was suspected when …

Physical examination of arteriovenous fistulae by a renal fellow: does it compare favorably to an experienced interventionalist?

Physical examination (PE) has been highlighted to detect vascular access stenosis with high degree of accuracy when performed by an interventional nephrologist (IN) with expertise in physical examination. This study examines the accuracy of PE compared with angiography when performed by a nephrology fellow (NF). It also compares NF results to that of IN. Didactic and hands-on PE training was provided to a renal fellow for 1 month during an interventional nephrology rotation. Forty-five and 142 consecutive cases of arteriovenous fistula dysfunction were examined by the NF and IN, respectively. …

Importance of physical examination in the absence of a mammographic abnormality for the detection of early-stage breast cancer.

PURPOSE: A recent trial called into question the efficacy of breast self-examination. We studied the characteristics and outcome of women in whom physical examination (PE) was their sole method of breast cancer detection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1970 to 1998, 1752 women with stage I/II breast cancer underwent breast-conserving surgery and radiation. Two hundred sixty patients (15%) had abnormal PE finding as their sole method of cancer detection at the time of diagnosis, 723 (41%) had only mammographic findings, and 762 (43%) had both. RESULTS: Detection by PE was associated with younger …

Examining bidirectional longitudinal relationships between physical activity and physical function in older breast cancer survivors: The Thinking and Living with Cancer study.

BACKGROUND: Older breast cancer survivors are susceptible to cancer- and treatment-related losses in physical function that can negatively affect daily living activities, mobility, and independence. Although physical activity can improve physical function, few studies have focused on older survivors or explored interrelationships between physical activity and physical function. Longitudinal bidirectional relationships between physical activity and physical function in breast cancer survivors and noncancer controls aged 60+ years were evaluated. METHODS: Survivors (aged 67 ± 7 years; n = 357)

Selective Ultrasound Screening for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip in At-Risk Infants With Normal Physical Examinations.

BACKGROUND: Screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) remains variable, particularly for infants who present with known risk factors but have normal physical examinations. This study evaluated the diagnostic yield and management impact of selective ultrasonography screening in this patient population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed data from all infants who underwent hip ultrasonography for at-risk screening at a single institution between 2018 and 2024. Patients with at-risk status had a normal physical examination and 1 or more DDH risk factors (ie, breech presentation, fir…

Using Ecological Momentary Assessment to Examine Predictors of Motivation for Physical Activity in Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) involves repeated assessments of patients' real-time experiences. Smartphone delivery of EMA can monitor healthy behaviors, including physical activity (PA). PA is critical for maintaining mobility and independence in older adults. We aimed to utilize EMA for monitoring motivation for PA, while assessing PA and physical function (PF) as predictors. METHODS: We collected 179 EMA responses from 28 community-dwelling older adults (Mage = 72.67±6.55 years, 82.1% female) over one week. Motivation for PA was determined using a single question deli

Teaching Healthcare Students and Professionals to Accommodate People With Neurodevelopmental Disorders During Physical Examinations.

People diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) experience health disparities. To reduce disparities, healthcare students and professionals have repeatedly called for more training to help patients with NDD. To answer these calls, we developed time-efficient training to teach healthcare students and professionals to use evidence-based behavioral interventions during physical examinations to increase the comfort and cooperation of people with NDD. We hypothesized that the training would increase participants' confidence and competency in helping patients with NDD. Participants (n = 173…

A Case of Isolated Aortic Regurgitation, Later Diagnosed as Takayasu Arteritis: An Importance of Physical Examinations.

Takayasu arteritis is a large vessel vasculitis involving the aorta and its branches. It has a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and lacks specific diagnostic markers. Here we present a case of a 30-year-old female with isolated aortic regurgitation who presented with constitutional symptoms. On examination, she had unequal pulses with blood pressure discrepancy in the upper arms. With these findings on general physical examination, Takayasu arteritis was suspected. Laboratory blood reports showed raised C-reactive protein. Computed tomography angiography was done and was diagnosed as T…
