Comparison of risk factors for shoulder pain and rotator cuff syndrome in the working population.

BACKGROUND: To compare risk factors for shoulder pain without and with rotator cuff syndrome (RCS). METHODS: A total of 3,710 workers of a … 6% and 8.5%, respectively. In men, "shoulder pain" and RCS were associated with age, high-perceived physical exertion, and arm abduction. Automatic work pace and low supervisor support were associated with "shoulder pain," and high psychological demand and low skill discretion with RCS. In women, "shoulder pain" and RCS were associated with age, repetitiveness of t …

When Motivation Hurts: Barotrauma and Acute Kidney Injury in a Drill Instructor-A Case Report.

Military drill instructors are routinely exposed to extreme occupational demands, including high ambient temperatures, prolonged physical exertion, and repetitive forceful vocalization. We report the case of a 25-year-old active duty Marine drill instructor who presented with acute jaw swelling, chest tightness, and dark urine following prolonged yelling and physical exertion. Following a detailed work-up, he was found to have an acute kidney injury, clinically significant hyperkalemia, elevated creatine kinase, and a moderate pneumomediastinum with diffuse subcutaneous emphysema. The patient …

Images depicting human pain increase exercise-induced pain and impair endurance cycling performance.

The current study investigated whether viewing images of others in pain influences exercise-induced pain (EIP) and cycling performance. Twenty-one recreational cyclists attended five laboratory visits. The first two visits involved measuring participants' maximal aerobic capacity and familiarized participants to the fixed power (FP) and 16.1 km cycling time trial (TT) tasks. The FP task required participants to cycle at 70% of their maximal aerobic power for 10-minutes. In the subsequent three visits, participants performed the FP and TT tasks after viewing pleasant, ‎painful or neutral images

[Evaluation of the effectiveness of exercise-based controlled physical effort in women with heart failure in the elderly].

UNLABELLED: Heart failure (HF), especially during old age, significantly influences the decrease in physical fitness, depriving the patient of their independence during everyday life. The positive results of cardiac rehabilitation are one of the most well documented methods of lowering the frequency of hospitalisation and unfavourable prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. Currently complex cardiac rehabilitation is recommended by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and American heart Association (AHA) as being an important element of treating patients with HF. However these recommendation

Grade influences blood lactate kinetics during cross-country skiing.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of level vs. graded skate skiing on capillary blood lactate (B(La)), heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (V(O2)), and training intensity prescriptions. Eleven Nordic skiers completed 2 submaximal skate roller skiing treadmill protocols during which intensity was increased either by grade (G(inc)) or by speed (S(inc)). The protocols were compared for prethreshold BLa, HR, and V(O2) at lactate threshold (LT) and the HR/V(O2) relationship. Additionally, double-pole (primarily upper body) and skating (arms and legs combined) protocols were used

Quantitative study of articular cartilage and subchondral bone remodeling in the knee joint of dogs after strenuous running training.

All tissues of the joint are affected in some way in osteoarthritis because the joint is an interactively functioning unit. Our goal was to investigate the combined responses of articular cartilage and subchondral bone to altered loading conditions to improve our understanding of the physiology of these two components and, ultimately, the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis. A group of 20 female beagle dogs were divided pairwise into runners (n = 10) and controls (n = 10). The running training on a treadmill started at the age of 15 weeks, and during the following 40 weeks the running distance w

Physiologic parameters and perceived exertion with local muscle fatigue in postpolio subjects.

Fifty postpolio patients, 34 with and 16 without complaints of progressive loss of muscle strength, and 41 control subjects were studied to compare physiologic measures of the fatiguing process and to determine whether there is a significant interaction between the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and physiologic measures. Statistical analyses were by ANOVA and repeated-measures ANOVA. The RPE was obtained every 20 seconds during an isometric contraction of the quadriceps at 40% of maximal torque; median frequency (Fm) of the power spectrum of the surface electromyographic signal and neuromu

The effect of air temperature on physical working capacity.

Measurements were taken in ten healthy young male subjects, ages 20 to 25, under air temperature conditions of 5, 20, 35, and 50 degrees C. The relative humidity was maintained at 50% throughout all the air temperature conditions. Maximum work loads were obtained by treadmills. The first work load was 95 m/min 0 degrees grade; this was increased by 1 degree every one minute until the subjects reached a self-imposed maximum. The heart rate and expired air sample during the last 30 sec work was used for statistical analyses. The analysis of variance confirmed a significance effect of air tempera

[Efficiency of patients with chronic renal failure (author's transl)].

In 77 patients with chronic renal failure - all were conservative treated - exercise-tests were performed with the bicycle and in 67 cases spiro-ergometric tests. We found a correlation between the decrease of hemoglobin and the decrease of efficiency and a linear function between the decrease of hemoglobin and the increase of creatinin in serum. There was no direct correlation between the increase of creatinin and the decrease of efficiency. The efficiency, measured in Watt, and the oxygen pulse correlated. More patients with hypertonia exceeded the level of 70 of the quotient heart volume/ox

'Athlete's heart' in prepubertal children.

Bradycardia, cardiomegaly, heart murmurs, and ECG changes are typically observed in adult endurance athletes, but frequency of such changes among children involved in sports training is unclear. Pediatricians need to be aware of whether these features of the "athlete's heart" occur in their patients, because such features may mimic those of cardiac disease. Fourteen prepubertal competitive male swimmers were evaluated by physical examination, ECG and echocardiogram, and findings were compared to those of a group of active but nontrained control boys. Lower resting heart rates and echocardiogra

Elevation of creatine phosphokinase in young men after recreational exercise.

Twenty healthy male volunteers were divided into four groups for a period of recreational physical exercise. Standard blood chemistry determinations were made before exercise and on the two subsequent days. Creatine phosphokinase (CPK), SGOT, and lactic dehydrogenase levels were transiently elevated, but the change was considered significant only in the CPK level after certain types of exercise. Persons having these determinations performed should be questioned about recent physical exertion in the event of abnormal laboratory results.
