Comparison of auditory event-related potentials between children with benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes and children with temporal lobe epilepsy.

The abnormal brain discharges observed in benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) are located close to areas responsible for auditory and language processing. This study aimed to analyze the results of auditory event-related potentials (P300) in children with BECTS and TLE in order to assess whether the epileptic activity in centrotemporal and temporal regions may compromise the integrity and physiology of auditory system structures. This was a prospective, comparative, and cross-sectional study. Group I (GI) consisted of 13 children diagno

Role of damage control surgery in the treatment of Hinchey III and IV sigmoid diverticulitis: a tailored strategy.

Many of the treatment strategies for sigmoid diverticulitis are actually focusing on nonoperative and minimally invasive approaches. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the actual role of damage control surgery (DCS) in the treatment of generalized peritonitis caused by perforated sigmoid diverticulitis.A literature search was performed in PubMed and Google Scholar for articles published from 1960 to July 2013. Comparative and noncomparative studies that included patients who underwent DCS for complicated diverticulitis were considered.Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluati

Behavioral specializations of SI and SII cortex: a comparative examination of the neural logic of touch in rats, cats, and other mammals.

In what ways do passive touch and active touch require particular properties of cortical physiology? Because it is not easy to make predictions "bottom up" from neurophysiology and anatomy to behavior, there have been surprises in studying behavioral deficits following selective ablations of SI versus SII. For example, in earlier research on cats, unilateral ablation of SI unexpectedly had no effect on passive touch but did cause contralateral losses in posture and movement; it was ablation of SII plus subjacent cortex that led to contralateral losses in passive touch. In contrast, in a recent

Poultry digital twins must earn their authority: Biological validity, welfare value, and responsible adoption.

Digital twins could connect poultry observations with decisions about welfare, physiology, production and product quality, but their usefulness depends on what is represented, how the representation is updated, and what decisions it improves. This critical narrative review examines poultry studies and related methodological literature to distinguish sensing performance, biological validity and decision value. I define a poultry digital twin as a persistent, dynamically updated representation of a specified physical entity or process, with a model of change and an explicit decision and feedback

Physiological and Skin Microbiome Divergence Among Closely Related Anurans Co-Occurring in Agricultural Wetlands.

Understanding why endangered amphibian species decline while closely related congeners persist remains a central challenge in conservation biology. Host physiological traits and symbiotic microbial assemblages are increasingly recognized as important mediators of species responses to environmental conditions. Unlike broad comparative studies across geographically separated populations, we compared physiological capacity and skin microbiome characteristics among four anuran species, two endangered species and their respective common congeners from two genera (Dryophytes and Pelophylax), at a fi

Transcriptome of Coxiella-like endosymbionts in Haemaphysalis longicornis during blood feeding.

Coxiella-like endosymbionts (CLEs) are obligate nutritional mutualists of ticks that are thought to supplement B vitamins and other essential metabolites that are deficient in the tick's blood meal. Extensive colonization of CLEs has been observed in the ovaries and Malpighian tubules of several tick species, including Haemaphysalis longicornis. Despite experimental evidence linking symbionts to host fitness, their roles in blood feeding remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted a comparative transcriptomic analysis of CLE genes in adult female H. longicornis ticks before and two days after

A comparative framework for trichome and trichome-derived epidermal appendage development across model glycophytes and halophytes.

This review compares trichome and trichome-derived epidermal appendage development across model glycophytes and halophytes, revealing that conserved regulatory modules are independently rewired into lineage specific circuits to produce diverse epidermal structures. In halophytes, salt glands and epidermal bladder cells further integrate these developmental programs with ion transport and stress physiology, offering entry points for engineering crop stress resilience. Trichome-derived epidermal structures have arisen repeatedly across angiosperms, yet the mechanisms by which conserved epidermal

Beyond toxicity: Systems-level virulence of entomopathogenic fungi in termite social immunity.

Termites live in dense colonies where frequent social contact can facilitate pathogen transmission, but coordinated social immunity can also limit disease spread. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are particularly relevant to termite pathology because they infect primarily through the cuticle, using adhesion, enzymatic degradation, penetration, and internal proliferation to overcome host barriers. This review synthesizes current knowledge on EPF virulence in termites and argues that fungal pathogenicity should be understood not only as direct toxicity (lethal effects of pathogen-derived compounds)

Antipsychotics and Sleep Architecture: Where Does Lurasidone Fit?

Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychiatric disorders and are associated with increased symptom burden, impaired functioning, and reduced quality of life. Although second-generation antipsychotics frequently affect sleep, their effects vary according to receptor-binding profile and should not be viewed solely as a consequence of sedation. Lurasidone is distinguished by antagonism at D2, 5-HT2A, and 5-HT7 receptors with minimal affinity for histamine H1 and muscarinic M1 receptors, a pharmacologic profile associated with relatively low intri

Mapping the Regulatory Landscape of Sheep Pituitary Gland Associated With Puberty at Single-Cell Resolution.

The pituitary gland plays a pivotal role in regulating puberty and reproductive physiology; however, the precise cellular and molecular mechanisms driving the pubertal transition in large animal, such as ewes, remain poorly understood. Here, we generated a comprehensive single-cell transcriptomic atlas of the ovine anterior pituitary, specifically comparing the pre-pubertal (3 month) and post-pubertal (6 month) stages. We identified 30 335 cells classified into ten distinct clusters. Comparative analysis revealed a global transcriptional reprogramming during puberty, characterized by a marked

[Microbiota and microbiome of the lacrimal drainage system].

This review analyzes current concepts of the role of the microbiota and microbiome in the physiology and pathology of the human lacrimal drainage system (LDS). The terms are clearly differentiated: microbiota is the collection of living microorganisms, whereas microbiome also includes their genetic material and habitat. The article describes anatomical features of the LDS and involutional changes in adults (atrophy of the lacrimal puncta, canalicular fibrosis, and nasolacrimal duct stenosis), which predispose to tear stagnation and inflammation. The review includes a comparative analysis of th

Morphology of the Tubular Portion of the Digestive Tract of Free-Living Kinosternon scorpioides scorpioides (Linnaeus, 1766).

Kinosternon scorpioides scorpioides is an omnivorous chelonian with a wide geographical distribution, occurring from Mexico to South America, especially in Brazil. While morphological observations of the species have described its oesophagus, little is known about the other organs constituting the tubular digestive tract. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe the morphological aspects of the tubular portion of the digestive tract of this species. Ten adult specimens were analysed. After fixation in 10% formalin, organ fragments were embedded in paraffin using the routine histo

Animal Models and Alternatives in Vaginal Research: a Comparative Review.

While developments in gynecologic health research continue advancing, relatively few groups specifically focus on vaginal tissue research for areas like wound healing, device development, and/or drug toxicity. Currently, there is no standardized animal or tissue model that mimics the full complexity of the human vagina. Certain practical factors such as appropriate size and anatomy, costs, and tissue environment vary across species and moreover fail to emulate all aspects of the human vagina. Thus, investigators are tasked with compromising specific properties of the vaginal environment as it

Olfaction-Related Gene Expression in the Antennae of Female Mosquitoes From Common Aedes aegypti Laboratory Strains.

Adult female mosquitoes rely on olfactory cues like carbon dioxide and other small molecules to find vertebrate hosts to acquire blood. The molecular physiology of the mosquito olfactory system is critical for their host preferences. Many laboratory strains of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti have been established since the late 19th century. These strains have been used for most molecular studies in this species. Some earlier comparative studies have identified significant physiological differences between different laboratory strains. In this study, we used a Y-tube olfactometer to de

Chance and predictability in evolution: The genomic basis of convergent dietary specializations in an adaptive radiation.

The coexistence of multiple eco-phenotypes in independently assembled communities makes island adaptive radiations the ideal framework to test convergence and parallelism in evolution. In the radiation of the spider genus Dysdera in the Canary Islands, species diversification occurs concomitant with repeated events of trophic specialization. These dietary shifts, to feed primarily on woodlice, are accompanied by modifications in morphology (mostly in the mouthparts), behaviour and nutritional physiology. To gain insight into the molecular basis of this adaptive radiation, we performed a compre

Modelling the endocrine pancreas in health and disease.

Diabetes mellitus is a multifactorial disease affecting increasing numbers of patients worldwide. Progression to insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is characterized by the loss or dysfunction of pancreatic β-cells, but the pathomechanisms underlying β-cell failure in type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes mellitus are still poorly defined. Regeneration of β-cell mass from residual islet cells or replacement by β-like cells derived from stem cells holds great promise to stop or reverse disease progression. However, the development of new treatment options is hampered by our limited under

Urine: Waste product or biologically active tissue?

AIMS: Historically, urine has been viewed primarily as a waste product with little biological role in the overall health of an individual. Increasingly, data suggest that urine plays a role in human health beyond waste excretion. For example, urine might act as an irritant and contribute to symptoms through interaction with-and potential compromise of-the urothelium. METHODS: To explore the concept that urine may be a vehicle for agents with potential or occult bioactivity and to discuss existing evidence and novel research questions that may yield insight into such a role, the National Insti
