Pityriasis rubra pilaris triggered by vaccination.

INTRODUCTION: Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare inflammatory papulo-squamous skin disease. To date, the exact etiopathogenesis of PRP is unknown; although the most accepted triggers are viral or bacterial infections, few cases after vaccination have been reported as well. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Our aim is to conduct a systematic review of cases of PRP triggered by vaccination. The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched for articles concerning PRP post-vaccination, published between January 2000 and June 2024. We also added a previously unpublished case that came to our attention. EV…

Ophthalmic complication of pityriasis rubra pilaris.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare dermatological condition which may present with ocular manifestations. We report a case of recurrent cicatricial ectropion (CE) with topical beta-blocker use in the rare dermatological condition PRP. The patient underwent release of scar tissue, lateral tarsal strip and full-thickness supraclavicular skin graft for CE following immunosuppression with methotrexate for 3 months. Postoperatively, CE recurred, with skin graft shrinkage and resumption of periocular disease activity, 8 weeks following the introduction of topical timolol. The patient was refer…

Pityriasis amiantacea following bone marrow transplant.

Pityriasis amiantacea (PA) is a hair disorder characterized by matting of multiple hair shafts, typically occurring as an idiopathic condition. A 67-year-old woman with multiple myeloma who developed PA following a bone marrow transplant with melphalan conditioning is described. She noted initial changes in scalp hair regrowth 4 weeks posttransplant. During the next 4 months she developed multiple lesions of PA that rapidly responded to management, including mineral oil under occlusion in the evening followed by daily shampooing with alternating coal tar, salicylic acid, and ketoconazole shampo…

Pityriasis Folliculorum: Response to Topical Ivermectin.

Pityriasis folliculorum has been described as a dry type of rosacea with extensive proliferation of Demodex folliculorum in pilosebaceous follicles of the skin. This skin condition is frequently difficult to manage, with various treatment options showing mixed efficacy. Oral ivermectin, a macrocyclic lactone parasiticide with anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic effects, is one of the leading treatment modalities for demodicosis. Topical ivermectin has recently been FDA approved as therapy for rosacea. We present the case of a woman with pityriasis folliculorum who showed significant improveme…

Concurrent pityriasis rosea and Bell's palsy.

Pityriasis rosea is a dermatological disease with a well-documented clinical appearance, but less is known about causes and treatment. Bell's palsy is a neurological condition leading to acute idiopathic hemifacial paralysis. Recent studies indicate that human herpesvirus (HHV) 6-7 reactivation may be a contributing factor to both conditions. We report a case of the 2 concurrent diagnoses that supports a common contributing factor and suggests further awareness and research into the role HHV 6-7 may play in the aetiology of both conditions.

Recurrent pityriasis rosea: A case report.

Pityriasis rosea is a papulosquamous skin disorder that occurs most commonly between the ages of 10 and 35 years. Recurrent pityriasis rosea is rare. We report a patient suffering from recurrent pityriasis rosea, whose etiology may be related to either vaccine-induced stimulation of the immune system, or some rare vaccine component(influenza A [H1N1] vaccine, hepatitis B vaccine). We believe that such a case is unique and it has not been reported previously. The patient was successfully treated with a combination of oral cetirizine, a topical steroid cream, and narrowband-ultraviolet B phototh…

Pityriasis rosea of Gibert: immunological aspects.

More than 200 years after first description and 150 years after complete definition by Gibert, pityriasis rosea (PR) is still a clinical entity with many obscure aspects. Although great interest was focused on aetiology, studies on immunological mechanisms associated with this disease were rather discontinuous. We present a review of the literature on immunological features of PR, aimed to outline a unified picture of currently available knowledge in this field and create a useful starting point for future research.

Palmar herald patch in pityriasis rosea.

Pityriasis rosea is an acute self-limited inflammatory disorder of the skin. The initial clinical features of typical cases are the appearance of a herald patch. The herald patch is commonly located on the thigh, upper arm, trunk or neck; rarely the patch may be on the face, scalp or penis. There are no reports of a palmar herald patch in pityriasis rosea. In this article we present a 14-year-old male patient who had a palmar herald patch with truncal lesions of pityriasis rosea.

Childhood pityriasis lichenoides and oral erythromycin.

Pityriasis lichenoides (PL) is not uncommon in childhood, but current knowledge about the efficacy of oral erythromycin therapy for its treatment in children is limited. To investigate the role of oral erythromycin therapy in the treatment of PL in children, the records of 24 children with PL who had been started on oral erythromycin treatment at our institution between 2005 and 2008 were retrospectively reviewed. The study included 24 patients (14 male, 10 female) with a median age of 7 years (range 2-14) of whom 15 (62.5%) had PL chronica (PLC), six (25%) PL et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA), a…
