Vector-borne diseases continue to transmit many dangerous pathogens to humans. After decades of continuous use of insecticides, many types of vectors have shown the ability to build resistance to them. This has necessitated the development of more efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives in the form of bioinsecticides. Plants contain a wide range of phytochemicals with specific targeting, rapid biodegradability, environmental sustainability and a variety of medicinal properties, making them a valuable source of biologicals. Moreover, this has led to the development of highly effecti

ABSTRACT Dendryphion penicillatum and Pleospora papaveracea were isolated from blighted Papaver somniferum and Papaver bracteatum plants grown in growth chambers and the field in Beltsville, MD. The etiology of the diseases was determined, and the fungi are being investigated as potential mycoherbicides to control the narcotic opium poppy plant. P. papaveracea is known to be a highly destructive seedborne pathogen of Papaver somniferum, causing seedling blight, leaf blight, crown rot, and capsule rot. Single conidia and ascospores were isolated and cultures established from naturally infested

Both plant MYB transcription factors and plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) regulate biotic stress responses and crop productivity. However, their potential antagonistic cross-talk or synergistic priming effects remain unclear. The potential function of VlMYBA2 in transgenic mung bean was investigated through in silico analysis to assess the interaction potential of both mung bean VrMYB90 and VlMYBA2 with bHLH proteins involved in transcriptional complexes. A pot experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions using a completely randomized design to evaluate the effect of PGPB, Bacill

Rapid industrialization and urbanization have intensified cadmium (Cd) contamination in terrestrial ecosystems. The development of sustainable and low-impact remediation approaches are therefore essential. Phytoremediation using plant species displaying high Cd tolerance offers a promising solution for Cd-extraction from contaminated soils. Current study investigated the effects of plant growth regulators (PGRs; gibberellic acid and indole-3-acetic acid) and macronutrient fertilization on growth performance, biochemical traits and Cd phytoextraction efficiency of Ricinus communis (R. communis)

In the post-genomic era, virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) has played an important role in research on reverse genetics in plants. Commonly used Agrobacterium-mediated VIGS inoculation methods include stem scratching, leaf infiltration, use of agrodrench, and air-brush spraying. In this study, we developed a root wounding-immersion method in which 1/3 of the plant root (length) was cut and immersed in a tobacco rattle virus (TRV)1:TRV2 mixed solution for 30 min. We optimized the procedure in Nicotiana benthamiana and successfully silenced N. benthamiana, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), pepper

Cyanogenic plants have some potential as biocidal green manure crops in limiting several soilborne pests and pathogens. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) and Sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor subsp. sudanense (P.) Stapf), in fact, contain the cyanogenic glucoside p-hydroxy-(S)-mandelonitrile-β-D-glucoside (dhurrin) as a substrate of its secondary defensive system able to release hydrogen cyanide following tissue lesions due to biotic or abiotic factors. Given that dhurrin content is correlated with the biofumigant efficacy of the plants, a high dhurrin content could be a positive character for u

The rooting of stem cuttings is a common vegetative propagation practice in many ornamental species. A detailed analysis of the morphological changes occurring in the basal region of cultivated carnation cuttings during the early stages of adventitious rooting was carried out and the physiological modifications induced by exogenous auxin application were studied. To this end, the endogenous concentrations of five major classes of plant hormones [auxin, cytokinin (CK), abscisic acid, salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid] and the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid were ana

Benzoin resin, produced by the native Indonesian trees Styrax sumatrana and Styrax benzoin, has been incorporated into medical practices to treat wounds, erythema, and many other conditions for centuries. Endophytic fungi that reside within medicinal plants have antimicrobial, antioxidant, and α-glucosidase inhibitory capacities, contributing to plant health and derivative products. In this study, we determined the antifungal, antioxidant, and α-glucosidase inhibitory capacities of endophytic fungal isolates from three different tissues (leaves, bark, and stems) of S. sumatrana and S. benzoin

BACKGROUND: The diamide chlorantraniliprole stands out for its high performance in controlling agricultural pests, with high selectivity and reduced environmental impact. In coffee cultivation, this insecticide has been widely employed for the management of the coffee leaf miner (Leucoptera coffeella Guérin-Méneville, 1842). However, intensive use has favored the selection of resistant populations, compromising control efficacy and intensifying biotic stress in plants. This study aimed to evaluate the morphophysiological effects of chlorantraniliprole on coffee seedlings (Coffea arabica L., cv

Grassland ecosystems harbor diverse plant-associated fungal communities that contribute to ecosystem functioning and plant health. However, large-scale culture-based inventories of root-invading fungi across multiple grassland regions in China remain scarce. In this study, we conducted a multi-region survey of culturable root-invading fungi isolated from surface-sterilized, discolored root and basal stem tissues in contact with the soil. We sampled 33 herbaceous plant species, representing 19 genera and 9 families, across 17 counties in Qinghai, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, and Xizang. A total of

Indoor formaldehyde primarily originates from building materials, furniture, artificial boards, and various adhesive coatings. Phytoremediation is a green and environmentally friendly method for removing formaldehyde. The existing researches on the removing formaldehyde by plants lacked exploration of Dieffenbachia maculata, which had a purification rate of formaldehyde of 43.7%. This study subjected the roots, stems and leaves of D. maculata to time-gradient treatments with formaldehyde isotopic solutions. The metabolites for assimilating formaldehyde in the roots, stems and leaves parts of D

We detected 213 lodging QTLs and demonstrated that drought-induced stem lodging in grain sorghum is substantially associated with stay-green and plant height suggesting a critical role of carbon remobilisation. Sorghum is generally grown in water limited conditions and often lodges under post-anthesis drought, which reduces yield and quality. Due to its complexity, our understanding on the genetic control of lodging is very limited. We dissected the genetic architecture of lodging in grain sorghum through genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 2308 unique hybrids grown in 17 Australian sorghu
