[Damage repair in breast cancer has to evolve].

Breast damage is likely to result in compensation according to the principle of full compensation. However, breast damage, little covered in … ermanent aesthetic damage is proposed. Sexual prejudice must take into account an impairment of the pleasure related to sexuality and its erotic function, in line with the concept of sexual health. However, even after reconstruction, the areas of quality of sexual life and sexual satisfaction often remain affected. An exploration using standardized questio …

Living alone but eating together: Exploring lunch clubs as a dining out experience.

Dining out is most often associated with pleasure and gratification, principally since it presents opportunities for sociability. However, access to dining out experiences is influenced by multiple factors, including age. Little is known about the dining out habits of older people. In particular, the food practices of those living alone in the community is under-researched compared to those in hospital or residential care. This study explores the perceptions and preferences of ten older people towards domestic and communal meals in South East Scotland. Qualitative data were generated from 5-da…

Substance abuse in adolescents: a complex conundrum for the clinician.

Substance abuse remains a complex and pervasive conundrum for society and for clinicians seeking to improve the lives of their pediatric patients. Substance abuse is linked to the human instinct for pleasure at any cost and is fueled by enticing encouragement of the media teaching society to seek drug-induced pleasure without fear of negative consequences. Other complications are the limited education about psychoactive substances provided to youth and the health care profession pledged to serve them. Primary care clinicians must provide their adolescent patients with adequate screening and co…

[Tobacco: sacred and profane as regards smoke].

Blowing smoke was a sacred habit among the American Indian people in Brazil at the arrival of the first Europeans. That remains a practice of prevention and recovery among the remote people of Amazon and Rio Negro. Addiction to smoking was propagated by Nicot in Europe for the pleasure it procures but it became such real plague of the modern society that every country has to struggle against its given attractive image of a way of life.

The cerebral representation of scratching-induced pleasantness.

Itch is an unpleasant sensation with the desire to scratch. Although it is well known that scratching itchy skin is pleasurable, the cerebral mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are poorly understood. We hypothesized that the reward system is associated with scratching-induced pleasantness. To investigate this hypothesis, a functional magnetic resonance imaging study was performed in 16 healthy subjects. Pleasantness was evoked by scratching the wrists where itch stimuli were applied, while scratching the dorsal forearms, far from itch stimuli, did not evoke pleasantness. Interestingly, plea

The pubococcygens and female orgasm: a correlational study with normal subjects.

The relationship of pubococcygeal condition to orgasmic responsiveness in 102 women from a university community was examined in a controlled, prospective investigation. Pubococcygeal strength was measured with a perineometer while responsiveness was assessed by a standardized interview yielding reliable measures of self-reported orgasmic response. Subjects whose responsiveness might have been impaired by such factors as alcohol consumption, inadequate stimulation, and high sexual anxiety were excluded from analyses. Excellent within-session but poor across-session test-retest reliability of th

Investigating Reading Enjoyment in Adults With Dyslexia.

Previous studies have suggested that adults with dyslexia do not enjoy reading, based on data from trait-based questionnaires. This study uses state-based measures of reading to offer greater insight into different aspects of motivation, including liking and wanting. In a new paradigm sensitive to dynamic changes in reading enjoyment, adults with dyslexia (n = 59) and without dyslexia (n = 59) read 24 book extracts, rated their enjoyment and answered a question about the extract. Subsequently, participants decided whether to accept a cost (e.g., 3-6 s wait) to read the next paragraph. We also

Cortical processing of chemosensory and hedonic features of taste in active licking mice.

In the last two decades, a considerable amount of work has been devoted to investigating the neural processing and dynamics of the primary taste cortex of rats. Surprisingly, much less information is available on cortical taste electrophysiology in awake mice, an animal model that is taking on a more prominent role in taste research. Here we present electrophysiological evidence demonstrating how the gustatory cortex (GC) encodes the basic taste qualities (sweet, salty, sour, and bitter) and water when stimuli are actively sampled through licking, the stereotyped behavior by which mice control

Agreeableness and Self-Consciousness as Predictors of Induced Scratching and Itch in Patients with Psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis (PS) is a frequent skin disease accompanied by itch, a symptom that has been shown to be related to depression and self-consciousness. PS patients describe themselves as more agreeable than healthy controls (HC), a trait that might be protective against impulsive scratching. PURPOSE: This study is the first to analyze the relationship between agreeableness and induced scratching and between depression, self-consciousness, and induced itch in PS patients. METHODS: Twenty-four PS patients and 24 HC were shown two videos: an itch-inducing experimental video (EV) and a non-

Brief report: significant differences in perceived odor pleasantness found in children with ASD.

The aim of our study was to explore possible differences in estimation of odor pleasantness in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) compared to controls. Thirty-five patients with Asperger's syndrome and high functioning autism (mean age 10.8 ± 3.6 years; 31 boys) were compared with 35 healthy control subjects (mean age 10.4 ± 2.4 years; 28 boys). Odor pleasantness was assessed on a 5-point scale using the Sniffin' Sticks test (Identification part of the test). Patients with ASD, compared to healthy controls, perceived the smell of cinnamon and pineapple as significantly less pleasant

Anatomy and physiology of the upper airway.

The nose is the major portal of air exchange between the internal and external environment. The nose participates in the vital functions of conditioning inspired air toward a temperature of 37°C and 100% relative humidity, providing local defense and filtering inhaled particulate matter and gases. It also functions in olfaction, which provides both a defense and pleasure for the individual. Understanding normal physiology provides the basis for recognizing abnormalities.

The Great Adventure of an American Human Geneticist.

It is my great pleasure to have been asked by the Editorial Committee of the Annual Review of Genomics and Human Genetics to write a short autobiography of my life in genetics over the past 70 years. It has been a great adventure. I came both to America and to human genetics by a circuitous and ultimately very fortunate route. I hope the next generation of geneticists will enjoy reading about it.

Reviewing Physiological Measures of Implicit Consumer Response to Food.

This review provides information about the contribution of the different physiological and neural methods of measuring consumer responses to food and discusses their potential for improving the understanding of processes underlying food pleasure and choice. A substantial body of work (132 studies published between 2011 and 2026) has recorded consumers' implicit responses to foods, using physiological (ANS) methods such as Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), Heart Rate (HR), Pupil Size (PS), and facial expressions; and neuronal methods such as Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional Magnetic Reso…

Examining the multidimensional impact on soft drink packaging preferences through the unified model of aesthetics.

Consumer psychology has been proven to have an essential influence on aesthetic preferences. Previous research on aesthetics focused on long … accomplishment and that connectedness, typicality, and unity are the main determinants of aesthetic pleasure. Study 2 added two scenarios: for "going to a very formal meeting," stimuli with unity, typicality, and connectedness could best induce aesthetic pleasure. For "going to a good friend's rave party," the novelty, autonomy, and variety of designs were …

Exploring the Role of Reward Functioning in the Overlap of Post-Traumatic Stress and Cocaine Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are common in people with cocaine use disorder (CUD), and even sub-threshold PSTD symptoms result in worse treatment outcomes. Difficulties with reward functioning may drive this comorbidity. Impairments in reward functioning are prominent in both PTSD and CUD and contribute to development of substance use problems after trauma. There are three distinct reward processes that may be involved in the PTSD/CUD overlap: consummatory reward (ability to experience pleasure), motivational reward (willingness to exert effort for rewards), and re…
