Why do central arachnoid pouches expand?

Three cases of progressive hydrocephalus, two occurring in infants and one in a 12 year old girl who also exhibited precocious puberty, were found to be associated with large arachnoid pouches originating within the posterior fossa. The pathogenesis of such cysts is discussed with special reference to the possibility that their progressive distension results from CSF pulsations of venous origin. Both a direct method of treatment (opening the cyst into the adjacent subarachnoid space) and an indirect one (insertion of a ventriculo-atrial shunt) have been used with success.

[Evaluation of shunt therapy in normal pressure hydrocephalus-surgical results in neurological conditions (author's transl)].

This presentation is a study of 18 patients diagnosed as having normal pressure hydrocephalus and treated by CSF diversion procedures. Pre- … pathic. 169Yb cisternography, transfer test of radioisotope to blood, angiography and in some cases pneumoencephalography were performed in the usual manner to confirm the diagnosis. Attempts have been made to correlate the surgical results with the ages of patients, the duration of symtoms, and the causes of hydrocephalus. Neurological symptoms were divided into three …

[A case of brain cysticerosis].

A 59-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with the history of epileptick attack of six years' duration. The seizure was associated with Jacksonian march starting in the right hand and then generalized. Todd's paresis of the right arm followed occasionally to the seizure. He was admitted to neurosurgical unit of other hospital in 1968 and 1971, but on each occasion no tumor or vascular abnormality was detected by extensive examiniations such as brain angiography, pneumoencephalography or brain scanning. He continued his hob as an engineer with anticonvulsant. He once lived in Manchuria in …

Demonstration of cerebrospinal fluid leakage on radionuclide cisternography by SPECT/CT.

We report a case of a 37-year-old woman with severe headache provoked by postural changes who was referred to the nuclear medicine department for radionuclide cisternography to demonstrate suspected cerebrospinal fluid leakage. There was an increased uptake laterally on the left paraspinal region of upper thoracal spine and posteriorly on the upper cervical region. Fused SPECT/CT images located the exact leakage site as at the first costovertebral junction level on the left side laterally and on the posterior region of the first and second cervical spine. The treatment with epidural blood patc

The petrous temporal bone (including the cerebellopontine angle).

Lower resolution CT scanners play an important role in the evaluation of the cerebellopontine angle, but careful integration along with the older conventional examinations is often necessary. A high-resolution CT scanner may provide all the necessary information. With proper techniques, bony changes are most clearly analyzed, and small tumors of the acoustic nerve may be directly seen in the cerebellopontine angle, and even in the internal auditory canal, with only a contrast-enhanced scan. If necessary CT-air cisternography provides the most sensitive and least morbid of the definitive, invas

Radiology in the diagnosis of colloid cysts of the third ventricle.

A series of 38 cases of colloid cyst of the 3rd ventricle is described in most of whom the diagnosis, important for curative surgery, was made radiologically. The most useful investigative technique was pneumography, by which the tumour was outlined in almost all cases. The lateral "hanging head" projection generally demonstrated the lesion most satisfactorily. Care in manipulating air introduced at ventriculography through the foramina of Monro into the 3rd ventricle was frequently rewarded by clear definition of the tumour. In more than one-third of the cases, the lateral plain skull radiogr

Periaqueductal dysfunction (the Sylvian aqueduct syndrome): a sign of hydrocephalus?

A patient with hydrocephalus due to aqueductal occlusion is described in whom the Sylvian aqueduct syndrome appeared during a sudden increase in intracranial pressure. The ocular signs resolved completely when the hydrocephalus was relieved. Marked dilatation of the posterior part of the third ventricle and of the rostral aqueduct with axial displacement of these structures was demonstrated radiologically. It is suggested that the ocular signs in this case were the result of periaqueductal dysfunction due to assimilation and dilatation of the aqueduct, with secondary tentorial block. This abno
