We show that the microRNA miR-155 can be processed from sequences present in BIC RNA, a spliced and polyadenylated but non-protein-coding RNA that accumulates in lymphoma cells. The precursor of miR-155 is likely a transient spliced or unspliced nuclear BIC transcript rather than accumulated BIC RNA, which is primarily cytoplasmic. A poly(A) tail was identified on the 3' end of the prototype tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus strain Neudoerfl. This is in contrast to the general lack of poly(A) in the genomic RNAs of mosquito-borne flaviviruses analyzed so far. Analysis of several closely related strains of TBE virus, however, revealed the existence of two different types of 3' noncoding (NC) regions.
