BACKGROUND: Intravascular lymphoma is a rare disease with usually fatal outcome, characterized by the proliferation within the lumen of small blood vessels of neoplastic large lymphoid cells of B-cell origin. We report a case of intravascular lymphoma revealed by diffuse telangiectasia and cauda equina syndrome.
CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old Vietnamese woman presented with unexpected fever and weight loss. Three months after the onset of the first symptoms, an oedema appeared on the lower limbs and the trunk, followed by the eruption of diffuse superficial telangiectasia. Neurologic examination

Jonathan Hutchinson described a 42-year-old man with a previous history of alternating sciatica who had crushing of a pile under ether anaesthesia in 1889. When the patient awoke from the anaesthetic he had paralysis of his bladder and bowels. Jonathan Hutchinson could not establish a diagnosis. Evidence is presented to suggest that this was the first case of a prolapsed disc causing a cauda equina lesion as a result of anaesthesia and manipulation.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the importance of clinical examination and continued vigilance for neurologic deterioration in patients with sciatica. Cauda equina syndrome, a rare sequela of sciatica, is considered a medical emergency requiring surgical decompression.
CLINICAL FEATURES: A 32-year-old woman had sciatica that rapidly progressed to cauda equina syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the presence of a large nonsequestered disk fragment in the lower lumbar spine.
INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: The disk fragment was surgically excised. The patient experienced immediate pain relief af

Immunologic studies were performed in 21 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and 16 with the Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Levels of thymus-derived (T) cells measured by "total" and "active" rosette formation between sheep erythrocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (TEt, TEa) were within normal limits in all the patients, with the exception of four GBS patients, including one who also had received chemotherapy for lymphoma and three who were receiving steroids. When lymphocytes from the 21 patients were incubated with the bone-marrow-derived (B) lymphoblastoid cell line PGLC-33H, t

Twenty two cases of Guillian-Barré syndrome were studied at the Children's Hospital of the City of Morelia (State of Michoacán, México), in a four-year period; such that number represents tow out 1 000 of the patients hospitalized in that length of time. The subject of this paper is to get acquainted with the clinical features of this syndrome in this part of the country, to establish the usefulness of the study of the spinal fluid and to know the evolution of the disease in relation to the treatment with corticoids. In all of our twenty two cases, there were coincidental features with the one

INTRODUCTION: Beta-trace protein (BTP) is primarily used as a marker for traumatic CSF leakage. Spinal leptomeningeal cells adjacent to the spinal nerve roots are a major producer of this protein, which has prompted interest in its relevance to inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathies. BTP has not previously been investigated in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculopathy (CIDP).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: BTP was measured in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma in patients with GBS, CIDP, disease-free controls, non-inflammatory polyneuropa…

Guillain-Barré syndrome represents a heterogeneous group of immune-mediated peripheral neuropathies that are characterized by various clinic … ts, numbness of the tongue, and low fever (37.2°C). A diagnosis of acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculopathy (Guillain-Barré syndrome) was established. Despite treatment, the neurologic symptoms worsened. The paravertebral radicular type pains were difficult to manage with administered analgesic therapy, and there was a progression of the bulbar syndrome. …

BACKGROUND: Guillain‒Barre syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflammatory peripheral neuropathy caused by autoimmunity. Gangliosides and sulfatides are important components of peripheral nerves. Anti-sulfatide antibody-mediated complement is associated with acute sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy in GBS, which is characterized by pain and paresthesias.
CASE PRESENTATION: The child was a 7-year-old girl with headache and abdominal pain, followed by limb numbness and pain. Cranial imaging showed ventricular dilatation, peripheral nerve function conduction examination showed polyradiculopathy, and cer…

Involvement of cranial nerves, polyradiculopathy and paraplegia were the major complications found in patients with neurobrucellosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Neurobrucellosis should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of befitting neurological, rheumatological, and neuropsychiatric presentati …

The objective of this study was to assess the cross-sectional areas (CSA) of lumbar paraspinal muscles and their fatty degeneration in adults with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) diagnosed with chronic radiculopathy, compare them with those of the same age- and sex-related groups with radiculopathy, and evaluate their correlations and the changes observed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This retrospective study included 62 female patients aged 65-85 years, who were diagnosed with lumbar polyradiculopathy. The patients were divided into two groups: 30 patients with spondylolist…

The sedative thalidomide was withdrawn from the market 30 years ago because of its teratogenic and neurotoxic adverse effects. The compound … Thalidomide should not be used in patients with preexisting HIV-related peripheral polyneuropathy, polyradiculopathy or encephalopathy. In patients experiencing a complete remission, the discontinuation of thalidomide treatment and its reintroduction in the case of a relapse are preferable to maintenance therapy.
