Neurodevelopment at 2 years and umbilical artery Doppler in cases of very preterm birth after prenatal hypertensive disorder or suspected fetal growth restriction: EPIPAGE-2 prospective population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between absent or reversed end-diastolic flow (ARED) on umbilical artery Doppler ultrasound and poor neurological outcome at 2 years of age after very preterm birth associated with suspected fetal growth restriction (FGR) or maternal hypertensive disorders. METHODS: The study population comprised all very preterm (22-31 completed weeks) singleton pregnancies delivered because of suspected FGR and/or maternal hypertensive disorders that had umbilical artery Doppler and 2-year follow-up available included in EPIPAGE-2, a prospective, nationwide, populat

Sex-specific roles of insulin-like growth factor-1, lean mass and fat mass in type 2 diabetes prevention: Mendelian randomization studies in Western and East Asian populations.

BACKGROUND: Sex-specific effects of body composition and its drivers, including insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are understudied across ethnicity. We assessed the role of IGF-1 in T2DM and mediation by lean or fat mass, by sex in Western and East Asian populations, using Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: Genetic predictors of exposure (IGF-1) and mediators (fat or lean mass) were applied to genetic associations with T2DM in Europeans (n = 898,130) and East Asians (n = 433,540). Univariable and multivariable MR (MVMR) were used to obtain total and d

Single nucleotide polymorphisms and serologic levels of hypoxia-inducible factor1 α and vascular endothelial growth factor are associated with increased risk of oral submucous fibrosis in gutka users among a North Indian population.

OBJECTIVES: Tissue hypoxia in oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) induces hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1 α and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), causing angiogenesis. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may predict susceptibility to environmental carcinogens and to development of OSMF, as well as its severity and malignant transformation. This study aimed to determine the serologic levels and frequencies of SNPs of HIF-1 α and VEGF in OSMF. STUDY DESIGN: In this prospective pilot study, the frequencies of SNPs of HIF-1 α (C1772 T, G1790 A); VEGF-A 936 C/T; and VEGF-C (rs7664413, rs14

Characterization of the Population, Treatment Patterns, and Outcomes of Patients with Advanced or Metastatic Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) with Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Mutation (EGFRm): A Retrospective Cohort Study from IPO Porto.

Most patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) present with advanced/metastatic disease at diagnosis, and molecular profiling is critical in guiding treatment decisions. This retrospective cohort study aimed to characterize EGFR mutations (EGFRm) in advanced/metastatic NSCLC patients, treatment patterns, and real-world outcomes. Adults diagnosed between 2018 and 2021 and treated at a Comprehensive Care Center were included. Time-to-event outcomes were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method. A total of 110 patients were included, with a median age of 69.0 years (range, 37-93), 76.4% fema

Studies of bone marrow progenitor cells in lupus-prone mice. I. NZB marrow cells demonstrate increased growth in Whitlock-Witte culture and increased splenic colony-forming unit activity in the Thy-1-, lineage- population.

Previous studies have demonstrated that NZB marrow can transfer features of autoimmunity. Therefore, we undertook a study of NZB marrow to determine whether it demonstrated any phenotypic abnormalities. In Whitlock-Witte cultures, NZB marrow cells generated nonadherent cells at low seeding densities, densities at which marrow from other strains did not generate nonadherent cells. In contrast, NZB marrow grew less well than controls in Dexter cultures. Inasmuch as the latter favor growth of granulocyte-macrophage precursors and the former B cells, these results suggest a possible skewing of NZB

Implication of third-trimester screening accuracy for small-for-gestational age and additive value of third-trimester growth-trajectory indicators in predicting severe adverse perinatal outcome in low-risk population: pragmatic secondary analysis of IRIS study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the implications of third-trimester small-for-gestational-age (SGA) screening accuracy on severe adverse perinatal outcome (SAPO) and obstetric intervention in a low-risk population. Furthermore, we aimed to explore the additive value of third-trimester sonographic growth-trajectory measurements in predicting SAPO and obstetric intervention. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a Dutch national multicenter stepped-wedge-cluster randomized trial among 11 820 low-risk pregnant women. Using multilevel multivariable logistic regression analysis, we compared SAPO and ob

Interactions between local dynamics and dispersal: insights from single species models.

Population persistence in patchy environments is expected to result from an interaction between local density dependence, dispersal, and spa … ence within patches without much between-patch effect. For example, dispersal mortality reduces the population growth rate and counteracts the tendency towards complex dynamics. Density-dependent disperal amplifies the nonlinearity in the growth rate, thus opposing the stabilizing effects of dispersal mortality. Spatial heterogeneity has little or no effect on stab …

Consistent patterns in the inconsistent associations of Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), C-Reactive Protein (C-RP) and Interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels with delirium in surgical populations. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Biomarkers for delirium could increase diagnostic accuracy and may help to identify pathological pathways. Until now study findings concerning cytokine levels have been inconsistent. AIMS: Systematic review and meta-analysis investigating the association between peripheral levels of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), C-Reactive Protein (C-RP) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and delirium in surgical patients, and to explore if there are distinct/specific patterns that may potentially explain inconsistent results. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, Cochrane, and EMBASE databases were sea

The association of maternal vitamin D status with infant birth outcomes, postnatal growth and adiposity in the first 2 years of life in a multi-ethnic Asian population: the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) cohort study.

Maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy has been associated with infant birth and postnatal growth outcomes, but reported findings have been inconsistent, especially in relation to postnatal growth and adiposity outcomes. In a mother-offspring cohort in Singapore, maternal plasma vitamin D was measured between 26 and 28 weeks of gestation, and anthropometric measurements were obtained from singleton offspring during the first 2 years of life with 3-month follow-up intervals to examine birth, growth and adiposity outcomes. Associations were analysed using multivariable linear regression. Of

[From twentieth to twenty-first century: Europe and its population after the year 2000].

The model of demographic transition predicts that in the final stages of the transition, the population will become stationary. However, during the past 20 years or so, the birth rate in the majority of industrialized countries has fallen below the death rate, and a continuation of this trend will ultimately result in a declining population. In the UN recent projections of world population growth, an attempt was made to salve the transition model by assuming that when faced with a reduction in numbers, couples will wholeheartedly respond by increasing their family size. The author presents a t…

Impact of population on adolescents.

Adolescents are often overlooked in the efforts of developing countries to reduce population growth rates by lowering fertility and to care for aging populations in those countries that have been successful in reducing fertility. The September issue of the Asia-Pacific Population Journal contains an article by Professor Gavin Jones of the Australian National University entitled "Population Dynamics and Their Impact on Adolescents in the ESCAP Region," which overcomes that gap in information on the population aged 10-24. It examines aspects such as the growth of the adolescent population, age a…
