Relationship between illness perceptions, coping style and post-concussion symptoms after systemic traumatic injury: A comparison of those with and without mild traumatic brain injury.

Research has reported variable findings when investigating the relationship between outcome and coping style and illness perceptions after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The present study investigated 138 individuals who had been admitted to hospital after suffering a traumatic systemic injury, with 91 of these individuals also fulfilling criteria for mTBI and 47 comprising a trauma control (TC) comparison group. Participants were assessed 8 weeks after injury with measures of coping style, illness perception, post-concussion symptoms (PCS) and psychological symptomatology. After controll

Applicability and clinical utility of the German rivermead post-concussion symptoms questionnaire in proxies of children after traumatic brain injury: an instrument validation study.

BACKGROUND: The German Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ) can be used to assess post-concussion symptoms (PCS) after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in adults, adolescents, and children. METHODS: In this study, we examined the psychometric properties of the German RPQ proxy version (N = 146) for children (8-12 years) after TBI at the item, total and scale score level. Construct validity was analyzed using rank correlations with the proxy-assessed Post-Concussion Symptoms Inventory (PCSI-P), the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9), and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale

Effectiveness of non-pharmacological treatments for vestibular and oculomotor dysfunction in patients with persistent post-concussive symptoms: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Concussion is a form of mild traumatic brain injury that disrupts brain function. Although symptoms are mostly transient, recovery can be delayed and result in persistent postconcussive symptoms (PPCS). Vestibular and oculomotor dysfunction are among the most debilitating impairments associated with PPCS. However, pharmacological interventions for these impairments are associated with deleterious side effects. Accordingly, increasing research has examined the utility of non-pharmacological interventions for PPCS. The aim of this review is to synthesise and evaluate the effectiven

Postconcussion Dizziness Severity Predicts Daily Step Count during Recovery among Adolescent Athletes.

PURPOSE: Physical activity (PA) after concussion is an important aspect of appropriate clinical management. However, symptoms or functional deficits may reduce patient propensity toward PA, thereby negatively affecting recovery. Our purpose was to examine whether postconcussion dizziness, total symptom severity, or postural stability predicts PA level in the 2 wk after initial evaluation. METHODS: We evaluated adolescent athletes within 14 d of concussion on assessments of symptoms, dizziness, and postural stability. Athletes were provided an activity monitor to track PA for 2 wk after the ev

Recovery in children ages 5-10 years at three months post-concussion.

Some children and adolescents have persistent concussion symptoms that extend beyond the typical 3-4 week recovery window. Our understanding about what to expect when recovery is atypical, particularly in elementary-age children, is incomplete because there are very few targeted studies of this age group in the published literature. Aims were to identify lingering symptoms that present at three months post-concussion and to determine what factors are associated with prolonged recovery in an elementary-age group. Participants were 123 children aged 5-10 years who were seen at specialized concus

Interventions to Address the Needs of Adults With Postconcussion Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

Postconcussion syndrome (PCS) affects physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning. Existing reviews of interventions to address PCS are limited to psychological and rehabilitation interventions and to child and adolescent populations. We conducted a systematic review integrating current evidence about interventions for adults with PCS. The inclusion criteria were intervention studies of adults (ages ≥18 yr) with PCS that evaluated recovery from PCS symptoms and focused on functional outcomes; 10 studies met the criteria. Included studies demonstrated medium to high levels of evidence and in

Nonverbal Hand Movement Durations Indicate Post-Concussion Symptoms of Athletes.

Methods of post-concussion diagnosis are still under debate with regard to sensitivity, objectivity, reliability, and costs. Spontaneous displays of nonverbal hand movement behavior during interaction are indicative of psychopathology and are relatively simple to record and analyze. Increased continuous (irregular) body-focused hand movement activity in particular indicates psychopathologies that overlap in symptomatology with those of sport-related concussions (SRCs). We therefore hypothesized that the duration of "irregular," "on body," and "act on each other" hand movements is increased in

Behavioral Therapies and Mind-Body Interventions for Posttraumatic Headache and Post-Concussive Symptoms: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: There are no clear guidelines on how to treat posttraumatic headache (PTH) or post-concussive symptoms (PCS). However, behavioral interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and relaxation are Level-A evidence-based treatments for headache prevention. To understand how to develop and study further mind-body interventions (MBIs) and behavioral therapies for PTH and PCS, we developed the following question using the PICO framework: Are behavioral therapies and MBIs effective for treating PTH and PCS? METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of 3 databases (Medl

Assessment of Long-Term Effects of Sports-Related Concussions: Biological Mechanisms and Exosomal Biomarkers.

Concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in athletes can cause persistent symptoms, known as post-concussion syndrome (PCS), and repeated injuries may increase the long-term risk for an athlete to develop neurodegenerative diseases such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The Center for Disease Control estimates that up to 3.8 million sport-related mTBI are reported each year in the United States. Despite the magnitude of the phenomenon, there is a current lack of comprehensive prognostic indicators and research has shown that available monitoring t…
