BACKGROUND: Abdominal complications are recognized as a common complication of solid organ transplantation. These complications can range from gastritis with minor morbidity to viscus perforation and death. This study addresses specifically colonic complications in lung transplant patients to highlight their high incidence and significant morbidity and mortality in this population.
METHODS: Data was obtained from a prospectively gathered database on 210 patients who underwent isolated lung transplantation between February 1, 1990, and July 10, 2000 at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Chronic

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome (SJMS) is a rare disorder resulting from post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans following lower respiratory tract infection in childhood and may be complicated by bronchiectasis. We report the case of a man in his 60s with a history of childhood pneumonia who was diagnosed with bronchiectasis associated with SJMS. Against a background of chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa airway infection, progressive structural destruction of the left lung eventually resulted in a destroyed lung. Prior to the introduction of intrapulmonary percussive ventilation (IPV), the patient r

Yersinia is an enterobacterium that causes acute enterocolitis, pseudoappendicitis and sepsis. Some patients suffer from post-infectious immunopathological complications, such as erythema nodosum and yersinia arthritis, which are well known. Less information exists concerning the erythema multiforme-like yersinia exanthema, which is a distinctive dermatological disorder with target lesions localized predominantly on the neck, shoulders and arms. These lesions, which may be smaller but often are larger than the iris lesions in conventional erythema multiforme, tend to coalesce into plaques and

BACKGROUND: Despite growing evidence on the short-term deleterious effects of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in childhood on hematopoiesis, little is known about the long-term hematological effects of SAM in low-income countries (LICs). Our study explored the association between childhood SAM and hematological disorders in adults 11 to 30 years after post-SAM nutritional rehabilitation.
METHODS: This follow up study investigated 97 adults (mean age 32 years) treated for SAM during childhood in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) between 1988 and 2007. Participants were compared to

INTRODUCTION: Historically, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has been classified as a functional disorder, diagnosed through symptom-based criteria and managed by a uniform algorithm. However, current research suggests IBS may represent a group of disorders, each with an organic basis, such as post-infectious changes to the intestinal tract, inflammation, and immune activation, gut-brain axis dysfunction, bile acid dysregulation, or gut microbiome irregularities.
AREAS COVERED: This literature review examines the historical classification of IBS, the revisions/changes in diagnostic criteria ove

Recent studies highlight the strong correlation between infectious diseases and the development of neuropsychiatric disorders. In this editorial, we comment on the article "Anti-infective therapy durations predict psychological stress and laparoscopic surgery quality in pelvic abscess patients" by Zhang et al, published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Psychiatry 2023; 13 (11): 903-911. Our discussion highlighted the potential consequences of anxiety, depression, and psychosis, which are all linked to bacterial, fungal, and viral infections, which are relevant to the impact of infla

RATIONALE: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a common infectious disease in China. As a complication of post-Hantavirus infection, Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) was rarely previously reported. Here, we described a case of acute inflammatory demyelinative polyradiculoneuropathy secondary to Hantavirus infection in spring of 2023. We also made a summary of the clinical features from previous reported cases.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A young male patient complained a fever with headache, who was subsequently diagnosed with HFRS with positive serum Hantavirus antibody IgM. Two weeks later,

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic immune-mediated central nervous system disease that can affect both the brain and spinal cord. Given that MS can occur at any location in the brain or spinal cord and can lead to a variety of symptoms, this can lead to difficulty in diagnosing MS versus other conditions mimicking MS. Here we present a case of a 69-year-old female with a history of relapsing-remitting MS diagnosed in 2002 and melanoma status post-excision who exhibited progressive neurological decline over eight weeks characterized by right internuclear ophthalmoplegia, bilateral ataxia, and

An 11-year-old cat presented for respiratory distress and weight loss. Thoracic radiographs were interpreted as a diffuse bronchointerstitial pattern with bronchiectasis and a mild ventral alveolar pattern on the lateral views. Computed tomography revealed a severe diffuse reticular pattern, relatively hyperattenuating in subpleural regions, with diffuse traction bronchiectasis and some degree of honeycombing. Despite the absence of basal predominance, this pattern was considered to be suggestive of usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP). Other differentials (other types of interstitial lung disea

Cervical dystonia, although rare in the general population, can severely affect the lives of those afflicted with the disease. Throughout history several theories have been proposed regarding its etiology and pathophysiology, from underlying mental disorders to post-infectious to altered basal ganglia and brainstem function. However, CD remains poorly understood. Because of its similarity to Idiopathic Torsion Dystonia a genetic basic is suspected, but is not proven. Without a true understanding of the disease treatment remains symptomatic, and begins with physical therapy and medications and

Serous atrophy of bone marrow (SABM) is a rare marrow disorder associated with severe chronic illness and malnutrition. It results in characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal due to atrophy of fat cells and loss of hematopoietic cells with deposition of gelatinous material. This may be misinterpreted as a technical error from the MRI scanner or mimic infiltrative or infectious processes. We report a case of a 71-year-old severely malnourished and immunosuppressed man with a full-thickness ulcer over the right lateral malleolus who underwent an MRI of the right ankle without and w

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a highly prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder. Post-infectious IBS (PI-IBS) is caused by an acute gastrointestinal infection preceding the onset of symptoms. However, the pathophysiology of PI-IBS is not clear, and the purpose of this study was to investigate the probable immune mechanisms of PI-IBS.
METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to either an infection group or a control group. Mice in the infection group were infected with Trichinella spiralis to establish a model of PI-IBS (500 Trichinella), while control mice received o

It has been suggested that post-infectious inflammation in central nervous system is a cause of tic disorder including Tourette's disorder (TD). Since pro-inflammatory cytokines are important mediators inducing inflammation, the cytokine levels are regarded as one of the important indicators of inflammation. Several studies have investigated the relationship of autoimmunity and the pathogenesis of TD by measuring the inflammatory cytokine levels of blood. However, when using human samples, the experimental results can be affected by the factors like size of sample, comorbidity, medication that

Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is a chronic autoimmune blistering dermatosis associated with gluten-sensitive enteropathy and characterized by intensely pruritic papulovesicular eruptions, typically distributed symmetrically on extensor surfaces. Although DH classically presents with grouped vesicles and excoriated papules, atypical and exuberant manifestations may represent a substantial diagnostic challenge, frequently mimicking infectious, inflammatory, and autoimmune blistering disorders. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman presenting with a one-year history of progressive, intensely

Infectious diseases, chronic diseases, and mental disorders in both adults and children are reported after disasters occur. The correlation between chronic diseases and mental disorders has also been reported. Moreover, disasters may affect perinatal outcomes. Thus, both adult and child health should be carefully monitored in disaster aftermath. A prospective cohort study of pregnant women and their families, the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project (TMM) Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study (TMM BirThree Cohort Study), has been conducted since 2013. A total of 73,529 family members participated

BACKGROUND: Although mustelids occur worldwide and include a wide range of species, little is known about the diseases affecting them. Mustelids have regularly been submitted for post mortem investigation in the framework of the program for general wildlife health surveillance in Switzerland, which has been in place for nearly 60 years. We performed a retrospective analysis of the necropsy reports on mustelids submitted to the diagnostic service of the University of Bern. The aims of this study were to present an overview of the causes of mortality and morbidity observed in these carnivores, t

The viral infectious disease pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has affected over 500 million people and killed over 6 million. This is the official data provided by the WHO as of the end of May 2022. Among people who have recovered from COVID-19, post-COVID syndrome is quite common. Scattered epidemiological studies on post-COVID syndrome, however, indicate its high relevance. One of the manifestations of post-COVID syndrome is the development of pulmonary fibrosis (PF). This article is devoted to the analysis of literature data on epidemiology, immunomorphology, as well as X-ray morphological and

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a critical therapeutic intervention for hepatobiliary and pancreatic disorders, yet it carries significant morbidity and mortality risks due to the complications that may occur due to changes in the microbiota of the hepatobiliary system. Achieving the best patient results requires mastery of current complications, their risk factors, and proven management methods. This study aims to systematically review the incidence, risk factors, microbial patterns, and management strategies of post-ERCP complications in contemporary practice. A syst

BACKGROUND: Over the past two years, SARS-CoV-2 has frequently been documented with various post and para-infectious complications, including cerebrovascular, neuromuscular, and some demyelinating conditions such as acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). We report two rare neurological manifestations post-COVID-19 infection; multiple sclerosis (MS) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD). Further, we reviewed other CNS inflammatory demyelinating diseases (IDDs) associated with SARS-CoV-2, including optic neuritis (ON) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum

Giardia duodenalis (syn. G. intestinalis, G. lamblia) is a predominant cause of waterborne diarrheal disease that may lead to post-infectious functional gastrointestinal disorders. Although Giardia-infected individuals could carry as much as 106 trophozoites per centimetre of gut, their intestinal mucosa is devoid of overt signs of inflammation. Recent studies have shown that in endemic countries where bacterial infectious diseases are common, Giardia infections can protect against the development of diarrheal disease and fever. Conversely, separate observations have indicated Giardia infectio
