INTRODUCTION: Potassium iodine (KI) is used as a drug therapy for treating numerous diseases such as small-vessel vasculitis, erythema nodosum, vasculitis nodularis, Sweet's syndrome, tuberculosis and granulomatosis, and for iodized salt. At the same time, KI can be harmful. Iodine intake may increase the frequency of thyroiditis in humans, and may induce the occurrence of experimental thyroiditis (ET) in animals. Investigations on an experimental model for the examination of thyroiditis in Wistar rats have clearly showed morphological changes in the rat thyroid evoked by KI administration.

The suitability of the half-cell Pt/I2, KI in glacial acetic acid as reference electrode for potentiometric titrations of weak bases in the same medium was investigated. This electrode is easily prepared. It has been found very convenient in use and performing at least as well as the best electrodes used for the same purpose. Some phenomenological aspects of the behaviour of the above half-cell, of interest for the use as the reference electrode in the laboratory practice have been observed, that show important differences respect aqueous medium and other organic solvents.

Fungemia is a rare complication of Sporothrix schenckii infection and has always been associated with disseminated sporotrichosis. We describe an immunocompetent patient with localized lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis from whose blood the fungus was isolated. A lysis-centrifugation blood culture system may have improved our ability to detect low-level S. schenckii fungemia.

A 65-year-old white female developed sick sinus syndrome associated with thyrotoxicosis which resolved upon achieving a euthyroid state, thus obviating the need for permanent pacemaker implantation. TSH was less than 0.1 ng/dL, and 24-hour iodine uptake was 28%. After correction of the hyperthyroid state with propylthiouracil and potassium iodine, sinoatrial pauses up to 6 seconds resolved over 10 days. A subsequent sinus node recovery time was normal and no symptoms recurred over 22 months.

A 37-year-old woman presented with recurrent erythema nodosum-like lesions on her arms and legs that were preceded by chronic recurrent parotitis. Microscopic examination revealed a mixed lobular and septal panniculitis with many eosinophils and multiple eosinophilic flame figures similar to those seen in Wells' syndrome. The dermis was not involved. The classification, differential diagnosis, and possible pathomechanisms of eosinophilic panniculitis are discussed.

A 46-year-old man was diagnosed as having pyoderma gangrenosum after special stains and cultures from a skin biopsy specimen were reported as negative. A 62-year-old female who had received prolonged iodine therapy for asthma presented with severe thyrotoxicosis and severe asthma. Her history, elevated serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine, low 131I uptake, and elevated intrathyroidal iodine content by fluorescent scan were most consistent wiht a diagnosis of iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis (IITT). This study presents a novel approach that integrates ozone-driven chemical oxidation to convert NO into soluble NO2, followed by the simultaneous absorption of NO2 and SO2 into a CaCO3-based slurry using the redox catalyst potassium iodide (KI). Sporotrichosis is a deep fungal disease caused by a dimorphic fungus, Sporothrix schenckii. It occurs more frequently in the tropical and subtropical areas and is mainly characterized by nodular lesions of cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues and adjacent lymphatics that suppurate and ulcerate. Infection occurs by manipulation of contaminated soil, cats, or some wild animals or by inhalation of spores. Itraconazole is the best drug for treatment of sporotrichosis.

This is a case of thyrotoxicosis, presumably due to Jod-Basedow syndrome, after stable iodine ingestion for thyroid blockade in a patient with ovarian carcinoma having 131I-labeled monoclonal antibody imaging. With the increased use of radioiodinated antibodies, for therapy and imaging, this possible side effect of excess stable iodine administration should be noted, especially in patients with pre-existing goiter.

A 52-years-old policeman suffering from tuberculous meningitis, developed pseudo-umbilicated nodular skin lesions which increased rapidly in size during the course of his illness.
