Mapping Power Law Distributions in Digital Health Social Networks: Methods, Interpretations, and Practical Implications.

BACKGROUND: Social networks are common in digital health. A new stream of research is beginning to investigate the mechanisms of digital health social networks (DHSNs), how they are structured, how they function, and how their growth can be nurtured and managed. DHSNs increase in value when additional content is added, and the structure of networks may resemble the characteristics of power laws. Power laws are contrary to traditional Gaussian averages in that they demonstrate correlated phenomena. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to investigate whether the distribution frequency in

Communicative empowerment of people with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Personal narratives are conditional for victims of sexual abuse to overcome their trauma. Counsellors can help victims with intellectual disability to take an active position in conversations about sexuality and to co-construct a personal narrative. METHOD: Using discourse and conversational analysis, we studied 4 conversations between a counsellor and a woman with autism and mild intellectual disability. RESULTS: In conversation with a counsellor the participant was able to express her inner emotions and understanding about sexual issues and other sensitive topics. She was able

Peer education project with persons who have experienced homelessness.

This paper describes an unconventional health education project implemented by nurse practitioners in a nurse-managed clinic serving persons who are homeless. The nurse practitioners perceived that there were a number of potential barriers to providing health education to the homeless patients. These barriers included the fact that this patient population is part of a marginalized subculture affected by a variety of overwhelming social problems. An additional barrier was that the nurses often differed from their homeless patients in terms of race, gender, socioeconomic status, formal education

Motives and psychodynamics of self-reported, unincarcerated rapists.

Fifteen men, classified by self-report as rapists and attempted rapists, but who had never been arrested or convicted, were compared to a matched control group on standardized instruments and content-coded interviews. Differences in hostility toward women, power motivations, and hypermasculinity were similar to findings from studies of convicted rapists. However, results suggest a greater role for the father in the etiology of rape-associated dynamics than has previously been reported.

Experiences of psychiatric nurses exposed to hostility from patients in a forensic ward.

BACKGROUND: Hostile behaviour is becoming a way of life in South Africa. Hostility prevails at all settings, including in the health sector. In a forensic ward psychiatric nurses are subjected to hostile behaviour by the patients. AIM: The aim of the present study was to explore and describe the psychiatric nurses' experiences of hostile behaviour by patients in a forensic ward and make recommendations for nurse managers to empower these psychiatric nurses to cope with the patients' aggression. METHOD: Qualitative, in-depth, phenomenological interviews were conducted with nine psychiatric nu

Psychological flexibility and pain catastrophizing in endometriosis: Incremental validity and interaction effects in predicting psychosocial outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress and reduced health-related quality of life are common among women with endometriosis, particularly when the condition is accompanied by chronic pain. Psychological flexibility (PF), a core process in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, has emerged as protective in chronic pain, but it is unclear whether it adds explanatory power beyond pain intensity and pain catastrophizing or alters their impact in women with endometriosis. This study addressed these issues by (1) testing the incremental validity of PF in predicting psychological and functional outcomes afte

Gamma power and beta envelope correlation are potential neural predictors of deep hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a psychological intervention that is commonly used to enhance the effectiveness of therapeutic suggestions. Despite extensive fascination and study, the neural mechanisms behind hypnosis remain elusive. In the current study, we undertook a systematic exploration of these neural correlates. We first extracted well-studied neurophysiological features from EEG sensors and source-localized data using spectral analysis and two measures of functional connectivity: weighted phase lag index (wPLI) and power envelope correlation (PEC). Next, we developed classification models that predicted

In discourse: Bourdieu's theory of practice and habitus in the context of a communication-oriented nursing interaction model.

AIMS: This paper presents a discussion on the potential of the theories of practice and habitus as espoused by the sociologist Bourdieu. BACKGROUND: The interaction between nurses and patients is a constitutive element in the nursing process and a central aspect in the theories developed by Paterson and Zderad, and Orlando. Bourdieu's theory of habitus and practices assists in understanding and explaining differentiated results concerning nurse-patient interaction. DATA SOURCES: In a study on interactions with paraplegic patients, distinguished levels of interactions, which show considerable

Asking sensitive questions: accessing the 'private' account.

People living with faecal incontinence (FI) are often reluctant to talk to family or healthcare professionals about their feelings and the effects FI has on their lives. This paper provides an account of a continence nurse specialist undertaking a study using guided interviews to elicit the views of 22 people with FI.

Development and psychometric evaluation of a quantitative measure of "fat talk".

Based on her anthropological research, Nichter (2000) concluded that it is normative for many American girls to engage in body self-disparagement in the form of "fat talk." The purpose of the present two studies was to develop a quantitative measure of fat talk. A series of 17 scenarios were created in which "Naomi" is talking with a female friend(s) and there is an expression of fat talk. College women respondents rated the frequency with which they would behave in a similar way as the women in each scenario. A nine-item one-factor scale was determined through principal components analysis an

Empowering women in breast cancer surgery: A systematic review of shared decision-making between mastectomy and breast conservation.

BACKGROUND: As survival improves, attention in breast cancer (BC) has shifted from purely oncologic outcomes to quality of life, body image, and value-concordant decision-making. In this context, shared decision-making (SDM) has emerged as a cornerstone of patient-centered BC care, particularly in guiding choices between breast-conserving surgery (BCS) and mastectomy. However, its implementation and impact on patient outcomes remain inconsistently documented. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review was conducted across six databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, C

Disentangling the associations between women's decision-making power dynamics and maternal and child health outcomes in 35 sub-Saharan African countries.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has typically treated women's sole and joint decision-making as equivalent components of women's empowerment. This paper explores how different forms of women's decision-making power relate to maternal and child health (MCH) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). METHODS: We used the most recent data from Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 35 SSA countries (2012-2023), with outcome-specific samples ranging from 60,866 to 307,862 mother-child pairs. Women's decision-making power in healthcare, household purchases, and family visits was categorized as any decision by h

A self-powered implantable and bioresorbable electrostimulation device for biofeedback bone fracture healing.

Electrostimulation has been recognized as a promising nonpharmacological treatment in orthopedics to promote bone fracture healing. However, clinical applications have been largely limited by the complexity of equipment operation and stimulation implementation. Here, we present a self-powered implantable and bioresorbable bone fracture electrostimulation device, which consists of a triboelectric nanogenerator for electricity generation and a pair of dressing electrodes for applying electrostimulations directly toward the fracture. The device can be attached to irregular tissue surfaces and pro

Inappropriate/d bodies: Reorganizing the terms of life and death.

The aim of this article is to offer insight into the different meanings of death that pierce the lives of people with disabilities and to discuss how those meanings are formed through a close connection with their bodies. To do that, I take an anthropological approach to trace the life paths of two individuals from a southern Latin American metropolis, exploring their embodied experiences of disability. Based on their accounts, I look at how their bodies are affected by specific conditions of stigma, dispossession, and social death, but also how, as "inappropriate/d" bodies, they rise above th

An interdependence account of sexism and power: Men's hostile sexism, biased perceptions of low power, and relationship aggression.

Protecting men's power is fundamental to understanding the origin, expression, and targets of hostile sexism, yet no prior theoretical or empirical work has specified how hostile sexism is related to experiences of power. In the current studies, we propose that the interdependence inherent in heterosexual relationships will lead men who more strongly endorse hostile sexism to perceive they have lower power in their relationship, and that these perceptions will be biased. We also predicted that lower perceptions of power would in turn promote aggression toward intimate partners. Across 4 studie

Performance, power and condom use: reconceptualised masculinities amongst Western male sex tourists to Thailand.

Each year large numbers of Western men travel to Thailand for sex tourism. Although many will use condoms during their sexual encounters, others will not, potentially exposing themselves to the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Although sex tourism in Thailand has been well documented, the social drivers underpinning voluntary sexual risk-taking through the avoidance of condoms remain poorly understood. Engaging with R.W. Connell's concept of hegemonic masculinity and drawing on data collected from 1237 online discussion board posts and 14 face-to-face interview

Strategies To Empower Communities To Reduce Health Disparities.

Community-based participatory research is a promising approach to reducing health disparities. It empowers individuals and communities to become the major players in solving their own health problems. We discuss the use of community-based participatory research and other strategies to enhance empowerment. We also discuss projects from the Centers for Population Health and Health Disparities that have empowered communities to achieve positive health outcomes aimed at reducing disparities. We offer recommendations to policy makers for involving residents in efforts to achieve health equity.

The vaded ego state and the invisible bridging induction.

Abstract Ego state therapy is based on the assumption that personality is composed of parts. When people switch from 1 state to another, they take their ego identification with them, while their levels of affect, intellect, confidence, and skill change. A vaded ego state has become overwhelmed by fear or rejection such that when it becomes executive, it interferes with normal function and emotional stability. The angst these states carry are the root cause of psychological addictions, OCD, panic disorder, PTSD, a sense of unworthiness of love, extreme competitiveness, and much more. The invisi
