Size at birth and blood pressure in young adults: findings from a Brazilian birth cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of borderline blood pressure (BBP)and hypertension (HT) among young adults and to assess the association between size at birth and BBP/HT. METHODS: Data were collected from the fi rst Ribeirão Preto Birth Cohort Study conducted in the city of Ribeirão Preto, southeastern Brazil, that started in 1978-1979. Of the 6,827 singletons born in hospitals, 2,060 were assessed at23-25 years of age. Blood samples were collected, an anthropometric assessment was performed, and information was obtained regarding occupation, schooling, life habits and chronic diseases.

Red Blood Cell-to-Red Cell Distribution Width Ratio (RBC/RDW) Associated With Early Cardiovascular Risk in Young Mexican Adults With Low High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-c) and Elevated Triglycerides.

Emerging adulthood represents a critical stage in the early development of cardiovascular risk, characterized by the silent accumulation of … essure, and uric acid concentrations. Phenotypes with elevated TAG exhibited a higher prevalence of prehypertension (Pre-HTN) and ECR. The systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) and aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI) were elevated in dyslipidemic phenotypes, suggesting the presence of subclinical meta-inflammation from early adulthood. Erythrocy …

Joint effects of sodium and potassium intake on subsequent cardiovascular disease: the Trials of Hypertension Prevention follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of dose-response effects of usual sodium and potassium intake on subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) have largely relied on suboptimal measures of intake. METHODS: Two trials of sodium reduction and other interventions collected 24-hour urinary excretions intermittently during 18 months from September 17, 1987, to January 12, 1990 (Trials of Hypertension Prevention [TOHP] I), and during 36 months from December 18, 1990, to April 7, 1995 (TOHP II), among adults with prehypertension aged 30 to 54 years. Among adults not assigned to an active sodium reduction int…

Changes in the vasoactive effects of nitric oxide, hydrogen sulfide and the structure of the rat thoracic aorta: the role of age and essential hypertension.

Several studies have already confirmed the specific vasomotor effect of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and its interaction with the nitric oxide (NO) system in normotensive rats, but results in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) are limited. the aim of this study was to describe the age- and blood pressure-dependent effects of endogenous NO and exogenous Na2S and their interaction in vasomotor responses of the thoracic aorta (TA) in normotensive Wistar rats and SHRs. the systolic blood pressure (sBP), vasoactivity, NO-synthase (NOS) expression and activity, cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE) expressi

Prevalence and risk factors of hypertension in rural Bangladesh: A population-based cross-sectional study.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, are amongst the most fatal conditions afflicting people living in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), including Bangladesh. This study addresses the lack of population-based studies in rural Bangladesh by examining the prevalence and distribution of hypertension and its associated risk factors. To this end, we surveyed adults aged ≥18 years (i.e., household heads and their spouses) from 7384 households across 149 villages in rural Bangladesh in 2017 using a semi-structured questionnaire to collect data on blood pressure, anthropometr

Health and Wellness Characteristics of Employees Enrolled in a Workplace Wellness Study in the United Arab Emirates: A Descriptive Analysis of a Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Modifiable health behaviors have the power to increase (or decrease) the risk of chronic diseases, impacting a population's health. Health and wellness programs can potentially play a major role in initiating and supporting positive changes in health behaviors, which may lead to reducing the risk of premature mortality. A better understanding of the health and well-being status of the population is crucial to the design of proper and effective interventions. This pilot study aimed to describe the health and well-being status of a cohort of employees in the United Arab Emirates (U

Human Urinary mRNA as a Biomarker of Cardiovascular Disease.

Background mRNA in urine supernatant (US-mRNA) might encode information about renal and cardiorenal pathophysiology, including hypertension. H, whether the US-mRNA transcriptome reflects that of renal tissues and whether changes in renal physiology are detectable using US-mRNA is unknown. Methods We compared transcriptomes of human urinary extracellular vesicles and human renal cortex. To avoid similarities attributable to ubiquitously expressed genes, we separately analyzed ubiquitously expressed and highly kidney-enriched genes. To determine whether US-mRNA reflects changes in renal gene exp

Usefulness of coronary and carotid imaging rather than traditional atherosclerotic risk factors to identify firefighters at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for 45% of deaths in on-duty firefighters, in contrast to 15% of all deaths occurring on conventional jobs. Therefore, with the goal of developing a tailored prevention program, we assessed CVD risk in a cohort of 50 firefighters using imaging and traditional risk factors. Participants were aged ≥40 years without a history of CVD or diabetes. CVD risk was assessed by way of history, physical examination, blood tests, risk scores, coronary artery calcium (CAC), and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT). Median age was 46 years; 90% of subjects were men, 92%

Transient renin-angiotensin system stimulation in an early stage of life causes sustained hypertension in rats.

OBJECTIVES: Transient administration of inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) during the prehypertensive period in rats and humans leads to a long-lasting lowering of blood pressure (BP). Our aim was to unravel the critical period in which activation of the RAS induces chronic effects on BP and to determine the role of renal function and structure in this process. METHODS: Studies were performed in Cyp1a1-Ren2 rats, which harbor a construct for the production of mouse renin. This construct becomes activated when indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is added to the diet. Young (4 weeks old) and

CD28-expressing δ T cells are increased in perivascular adipose tissue of hypertensive mice and in subcutaneous adipose tissue of obese humans.

OBJECTIVES: γδ T-lymphocytes play a role in angiotensin II (AngII)-induced hypertension, vascular injury and T-cell infiltration in perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) in mice. Mesenteric arteries of hypertensive mice and subcutaneous arteries from obese humans present similar remodeling. We hypothesized that γδ T-cell subtypes in mesenteric vessels with PVAT (MV/PVAT) from hypertensive mice and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) from obese humans, who are prone to develop hypertension, would be similar. METHODS: Mice were infused with AngII for 14 days. MV/PVAT T-cells were used for single-cel

Perinatal outcomes in women with elevated blood pressure and stage 1 hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension was redefined in 2017 with lower diagnostic thresholds; elevated blood pressure is defined as systolic blood pressure of 120 to 129 mm Hg with diastolic blood pressure of <80 mm Hg and stage 1 hypertension as systolic blood pressure of 130 to 139 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure of 80 to 89 mm Hg. These guidelines did not include pregnant women. There is limited information on stage 1 hypertension and pregnancy outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether elevated blood pressure and stage 1 hypertension as newly defined by the 2017 American College of C

Feasibility of referral of patients with elevated blood pressure from the Emergency Department.

Recent studies suggest that patients' elevated blood pressure (BP) readings in the Emergency Department (ED) may be due to hypertension (HTN) rather than pain and anxiety. Identifying BP patterns suggestive of HTN in the ED presents an opportunity for referral. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to assess the feasibility of referral of ED patients with elevated BP readings suggestive of HTN. Adults with elevated BP suggestive of HTN and no history of HTN were tracked as to referral status using an actively monitored ED referral system. Patients referred to a community clinic netw

Efficacy of a family practice-based lifestyle intervention program to increase physical activity and reduce clinical and physiological markers of vascular health in patients with high normal blood pressure and/or high normal blood glucose (SNAC): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Previous interventions to increase physical activity and reduce cardiovascular risk factors have been targeted at individuals with established disease; less attention has been given to intervention among individuals with high risk for disease nor has there been determination of the influence of setting in which the intervention is provided. In particular, family practice represents an ideal setting for the provision and long-term maintenance of lifestyle interventions for patients at risk (ie high-normal blood pressure or impaired glucose tolerance).
