Characterization of lip prints in a Portuguese twins' population.

Lip print patterns are referred to as unique to each individual, but controversy exists surrounding twins. In this study, the lip prints of 19 pairs of monozygotic and 47 pairs of dizygotic twins were studied. The left lower lip was photographed and the furrows were classified using Renaud's classification. Results showed the same lip pattern was found only in one monozygotic pair (5.3%) and in 4 dizygotic pairs (8.5%), and no significant statistical differences were found between groups (p > 0.05). In monozygotic twins only type C furrows presence displayed statistical significant differences

Evaluation of three-dimensional printed virtual setups.

INTRODUCTION: Digital setups are reliable and show numerous benefits to the orthodontic practice. Fused deposition modeling can build physical replicas of these setup models. The purpose of this study was to compare 3-dimensional printed and conventional setups. METHODS: Ten sets of pretreatment plaster models were randomly selected and scanned to obtain digital replicas. Conventional and virtual setups were constructed based on the treatment plan, anchorage needs, and extraction pattern. The same arch form was used for corresponding conventional and digital setups by replicating the archwire

3D printed selectable dilution mixer pumps.

In this paper, we demonstrate the ability to 3D print tightly integrated structures with active valves, pumps, and mixers, and we use our compact chip-to-chip interconnects [Gong et al., Lab Chip 18, 639-647 (2018)] to move bulky world-to-chip connections to separate interface chips for both post-print flushing and post-cure device operation. As example devices, we first examine 3D printed pumps, followed by two types of selectable ratio mixer pumps, a linear dilution mixer pump (LDMP) and a parallelized dilution mixer pump (PDMP), which occupy volumes of only 1.5 mm 3 and 2.6 mm 3 , respe

3D-printed orthodontic brackets - proof of concept.

UNLABELLED: Today, orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances is usually carried out using preprogrammed straight-wire brackets made of metal or ceramics. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine the possibility of clinically implementing a fully digital workflow with individually designed and three-dimensionally printed (3D-printed) brackets. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Edgewise brackets were designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software for demonstration purposes. After segmentation of the malocclusion model generated based on intraoral scan data, the brackets were digitally po

The effect of print size on reading speed in dyslexia.

This article details a study which predicted that across a wide range of print sizes dyslexic reading would follow the same curve shape as skilled reading, with constant reading rates across large print sizes and a sharp decline in reading rates below a critical print size. It also predicted that dyslexic readers would require larger critical print sizes to attain their maximum reading speeds, following the letter position coding deficit hypothesis. Reading speed was measured across twelve print sizes ranging from Snellen equivalents of 20/12 to 20/200 letter sizes for a group of dyslexic read

3D-printed functional engineered intestinal models.

The intestine is a vital organ, orchestrating nutrient absorption, immune surveillance, and barrier integrity functions essential for human physiological homeostasis. Traditional in vitro intestinal models, such as 2D monolayers and static organoids, lack the complex architecture, multi-layer cellular organization, and dynamic physicochemical microenvironment of native tissue, leading to poor predictive power for drug response and disease mechanisms. The rapid evolution of 3D bioprinting, however, is changing this landscape. It has become a central focus in preclinical research to construct bi…

3D-printed optics for laser materials processing.

We report on high-power laser materials processing using 3D-printed beam shaping components. A diffractive axicon fabricated via two-photon polymerization is generating a Bessel-like beam for inducing in-volume modifications in transparent materials for cutting applications. The thin, centimeter-scaled, additively fabricated axicon structure is printed on a fused-silica substrate capable of withstanding average powers and peak intensities from an industrial ultrafast laser operating at 1 µm-wavelength. This concept enables fabrication of tailored beam shaping components for high-power laser ap

A 3D phantom for EIT printed in a single part.

Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a medical imaging technology that uses electrical current to image the body. Imaging phantoms which act as a well-characterized reference objects are useful for the study of EIT and calibration of EIT devices. A proof of concept of a new type of 3D printed phantom for EIT was recently introduced, and this paper seeks to fully realize this concept by printing a phantom with three-dimensional geometry in a single part and demonstrating how it can be used for the study of EIT. The 3D printed phantoms are printed all-in-one, with internal regions of differi…

3D-Printed Foods for Dysphagia: A Bibliometric Review.

Dysphagia is a medical condition affecting millions globally. Traditional modified diets designed for individuals with dysphagia often focus primarily on improved swallowability, yet they typically fall short in terms of palatability, nutritional diversity, and visual appeal, leading to reduced food intake, malnutrition and reduced quality of life. Recent advancements in 3D-printing technology offer the potential to create texture-modified foods that not only facilitate swallowing but also preserve nutritional content and visual appeal. However, there is a noticeable gap in the comprehensive b…

A 3D-printed model of axillary cavernous hemangioma.

Cavernous hemangioma is a benign hamartomatous proliferation of endothelial tissues that is found most frequently in the central nervous system. Extremity involvement is uncommon, and axillary involvement is particularly rare. We present the case of a 43-year-old man with a 2-year history of enlarging axillary mass. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a peripherally enhancing lesion medial to the brachial vein and close to the medial brachial cutaneous nerve. A 3D-printed model was created based on magnetic resonance imaging, which elucidated the spatial relationship between the mass and s

The impact of print exposure on deaf student literacy.

Recent studies suggest that benefiting early from both a cochlear implant (CI) and exposure to cued speech (CS, support system for the perception of oral language) positively impacts deaf children's speech perception, speech intelligibility, and reading. This study aims to show how: 1/CS-based speech perception ("cue reading"), and speech intelligibility might also constitute precise measures for determining the impact of CI and CS on deaf students' literary performance; 2/print exposure might also be a predictive factor in this equation. We conducted regression analyses to examine the impact

Leaching from a 3D-printed aligner resin.

AIM: To quantitatively assess the degree of conversion and the water-leaching targeted compound from 3D-printed aligners. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 3D-printed aligners were made of photopolymerized resin (Tera Harz TC85A). The molecular structure and degree of conversion of the set resin were investigated by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy (n = 5). The aligners (n = 10) were immersed in double distilled water for 1 week at 37°C and the eluents were analysed using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry methods (LC-ESI-MS/MS for urethane dimethacrylate [UDMA] and LC-APCI-MS/MS for bispenol-A [BPA]). 3D-printed swab with cover for precision diagnosis.

The collection capacity of common nasopharyngeal swabs and irregularities of medical personnel limit the accuracy of PCR testing. This study describes a newly designed 3D-printed swab that is combined with a 3D-printed cover to prevent the extraction of undesired nasal secretions. This swab improved the accuracy of PCR test results. The results of a series of experiments showed that, because of the mucus extraction effect, 3D-printed swabs can replace ordinary cotton swabs. The crisis of the worldwide medical supply shortage can be ameliorated to a certain extent by applying 3D printing techno…

Biomimetic Vasculatures by 3D-Printed Porous Molds.

Despite recent advances in biofabrication, recapitulating complex architectures of cell-laden vascular constructs remains challenging. To date, biofabricated vascular models have not yet realized four fundamental attributes of native vasculatures simultaneously: freestanding, branching, multilayered, and perfusable. In this work, a microfluidics-enabled molding technique combined with coaxial bioprinting to fabricate anatomically relevant, cell-laden vascular models consisting of hydrogels is developed. By using 3D porous molds of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate as casting templates that grad…

3D-printed microneedle arrays for drug delivery.

Microneedle arrays provide an efficient tool for transdermal drug delivery in a minimally invasive and painless manner, showing great potential applications in medicine. However, it remains challenging to fabricate the desired microneedle arrays, because of their micron-scale size and fine structure. Novel manufacturing technologies are very wanted for the development of microneedle arrays, which would solidly advance the clinical translation of microneedle arrays. 3D printing technology is a powerful manufacturing technology with superiority in fabricating personalized and complex structures.…
