The impact of childhood sexual abuse and paternal rejection on economic marginalization in adulthood: A prospective population-based study of women in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment has detrimental health consequences. Risk for economic marginalization in adulthood is less clear. OBJECTIVE: To assess prospective associations between sexual abuse, paternal rejection and maternal rejection in childhood and indicators of economic marginalization. We also examined whether these associations were moderated by the adult women's own education and social support. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A population-based cohort of 643 Swedish women aged 20-25 were asked to retrospectively report on childhood maltreatment. Information on economic marginaliza

Mother-Reported and Children's Perceived Social and Academic Competence in Clinic-Referred Youth: Unique Relations to Depression and/or Social Anxiety and the Role of Self-perceptions.

Depression and social anxiety symptoms and disorders are highly comorbid, and are associated with low social acceptance and academic competence. Theoretical models of both depression and social anxiety highlight the saliency of negative self-perceptions. We examined whether children's self-perceptions of social acceptance and mother-reported youth social acceptance are independently and uniquely related to children's depression and social anxiety, both before and after controlling for comorbid symptoms. Similar questions were examined regarding academic competence. The sample was 110 clinic-re

La différence: condition of exclusion or of reconnaissance?

From the Middle Ages onto the 19th century, following the trend set in leper hospitals, madness was to be hidden, secluded in dark places, far away from the mainstream of society. The emergence of the mad person, perceived as inevitably different, allows to make the boundaries between reason and folly, between human and inhuman, irrelevant. If leper hospitals have almost emptied out, if there are much fewer confinement facilities, the values and images related to the leper or the mad person, as well as the sense of exclusion, continue to persist. The purpose of this paper is to show clearly th

Mobility in Community Dwelling Older Adults: Predicting Successful Mobility Using an Instrumented Battery of Novel Measures.

Mobility in older adults is associated with better quality of life. However, evidence suggests that older people spend less time out-of-home than younger adults. Traditional methods for assessing mobility have serious limitations. Wearable technologies provide the possibility of objectively assessing mobility over extended periods enabling better estimates of levels of mobility to be made and possible predictors to be explored. Eighty-six community dwelling older adults (mean age 79.8 years) had their mobility assessed for one week using GPS, accelerometry and self-report. Outcomes were: numbe

[Digitisation and telehealth - Telemedicine in rehabilitation in the Czech environment].

Currently, Telemedicine mainly represents the passive transfer of data from the patient to the doctor, while telerehabilitation is an active therapeutic tool. Telerehabilitation and its applications are mainly the domain of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical speech therapists, clinical psychologists, and other non-medical professionals. Case model of telerehabilitation in the Czech Republic is the model of the Virtual Ambulance for distance therapy in the Rehabilitation Centre Kladruby, which covers all basic areas of rehabilitation (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psycho

Gambling During the COVID-19 Crisis - A Cause for Concern.

: The COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to worsen mental health problems in the general population, including increasing engagement in addictive behaviors. Here, we describe observations suggesting that the current crisis and its sequelae may worsen problem gambling. The current pandemic may impact financial and psychological well-being due to social isolation during spatial distancing, and these stressors in conjunction with substantial changes in gambling markets (land-based, online) during the pandemic may significantly influence gambling behaviors. This situation calls for rapid research

Facemasks and face recognition: Potential impact on synaptic plasticity.

Visual recognition of facial expression modulates our social interactions. Compelling experimental evidence indicates that face conveys plenty of information that are fundamental for humans to interact. These are encoded at neural level in specific cortical and subcortical brain regions through activity- and experience-dependent synaptic plasticity processes. The current pandemic, due to the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection, is causing relevant social and psychological detrimental effects. The institutional recommendations on physical distancing, namely social distancing and wearing of facemasks

The Combined Efficacy of Adjunctive Psychological Interventions and Pulmonary Rehabilitation in People With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease - A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety exacerbate the pernicious cycle of dyspnea, inactivity, and deconditioning in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a well-proven management for improving exercise capacity and health-related quality of life in people with COPD. Recently, evidence suggested that adjunctive psychological interventions may enhance the efficacy of PR by targeting the bidirectional dyspnea-anxiety cycle and modifying maladaptive behaviors. OBJECTIVE: In this review, we aimed to evaluate the added benefit of psychological inter

Adaptive Journeys: Accelerating Cross-Cultural Adaptation Through Study Tours.

With the rise in short-term intercultural mobility programs, enhancing students' adaptive capacity through structured experiential learning has become a key concern. Using constructivist grounded theory, this study draws on extending the situated learning and embodied cognition theories as analytical frameworks to explore international students' cross-cultural adaptation within the context of study tours. It develops a three-phase framework (pre-departure, on-site immersion, and post-tour reflection) to trace their transition from cultural distance to adaptation. The findings reveal that the p

Misconceptions, prejudice and social distance towards people with alcohol use disorders in China.

PURPOSE: Research from Western societies indicates pervasive public stigma against people with alcohol use disorders (AUDs). However, there is a lack of knowledge about the interactions between different components of stigma and their contribution to discriminatory behaviour towards individuals with AUDs within the Chinese cultural context. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate the relationships of (mis-)conceptions, stereotypes, emotional reactions, perceived public stigma and their contribution to the desire for social distance among the Chinese adults. METHODS: (Mis-)co

Reduced interpersonal touch and elevated preferred interpersonal distance are signs of impaired social contact behavior in post-COVID syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Increased inflammation often evokes an adaptive sickness behavior with social withdrawal. We aimed to test whether reduced social contact also characterizes Post-COVID syndrome, a condition that is hypothesized to involve prolonged inflammation following SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: We queried 49 Post-COVID patients (mean age = 46.8 years, 38 (77.6 %) female, mean duration of disease = 16 months) and 49 age- and gender-matched healthy control paricipants for their satisfaction with socializing, frequency of interpersonal contact and touch, and preferred interpersonal distance. The impact of COVID-19 on mentoring early-career investigators: "Everything can wait. Listen more than usual and share your own struggles".

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted almost all sectors of academic training and research, but the impact on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) research mentoring has yet to be documented. We present the perspectives of diverse, experienced mentors in a range of HIV research disciplines on the impact of COVID-19 on mentoring the next generation of HIV researchers. In November to December, 2020, we used an online data collection platform to cross-sectionally query previously-trained HIV mentors on the challenges related to mentoring during the pandemic, surprising/positive aspects of mentoring in tha

Substance use and abuse, COVID-19-related distress, and disregard for social distancing: A network analysis.

Research shows that there has been a substantial increase in substance use and abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that substance use/abuse is a commonly reported way of coping with anxiety concerning COVID-19. Anxiety about COVID-19 is more than simply worry about infection. Research provides evidence of a COVID Stress Syndrome characterized by (1) worry about the dangers of COVID-19 and worry about coming into contact with coronavirus contaminated objects or surfaces, (2) worry about the personal socioeconomic impact of COVID-19, (3) xenophobic worries that foreigners are spreading COVID

Is ethnic prejudice declining in Britain? Change in social distance attitudes among ethnic majority and minority Britons.

Most literature on racial prejudice deals with the racial attitudes of the ethnic majority and ethnic minorities separately. This paper breaks this tradition. We examine the social distance attitudes of white and non-white British residents to test if these attitudes follow the same trends over time, whether they are driven by the same social processes and whether they are inter-related. We have three main findings. Firstly, social distance from other ethnic groups has declined over time for both white and ethnic minority Britons. For the white majority there are both period and cohort element

Speed choice and driving performance in simulated foggy conditions.

Driving in fog is a potentially dangerous activity that has been investigated in a number of different ways; however, most have focused on identifying the underlying perceptual changes that result in an inability to perceive speed of vehicle motion. Although the previous research has identified the perceptual changes associated with driving in fog and shows that people are highly likely to perceive their speed to be higher than it actually is, these research studies have not investigated driving behavior when drivers are allowed to maintain speed as they feel appropriate and make use of the ve
