The three circle model of compassion focused therapy: An experimental paradigm to assess dynamic psychophysiological changes of emotion regulation systems.

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is an integrated, evolutionary-informed biopsychosocial therapy model. Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses of CFT indicate that it is effective for a range of different clinical and non-clinical populations to improve overall mental health and wellbeing. Central to CFT is the tripartite model of emotion regulation, consisting of threat, drive, and soothing systems. The digital Three Circles Scale (d3CS), a novel measure of the tripartite model, has been validated with adults and teenagers, however, its link to physiological changes in controlled experi

Mapping psychophysiological associations among perceived stress, resilience, and the cortisol/DHEA ratio in people living with HIV: A network analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This study applied network analysis to characterize an integrated psycho-physiological stress network, identify central and bridge nodes, and determine psychological nodes most proximally associated with stress biomarkers among people living with HIV (PLWH). METHODS: Baseline data were drawn from 800 PLWH in Guangxi, China. Perceived stress and resilience were assessed using validated scales, and cortisol/DHEA ratio was quantified from hair samples. Gaussian graphical models integrating cortisol/DHEA, perceived stress, and resilience were estimated using EBICglasso. Expected influ

Restorative effects of small urban parks: a multi-method study using eye-tracking and psychophysiological measures in Fuzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Rapid urbanization has intensified psychological stress among urban residents. As highly accessible forms of urban green space, small urban parks play a vital role in fostering psychological resilience and restorative experiences. However, in high-density cities such as Fuzhou, the underlying restorative mechanisms of different types of small parks-along with the moderating effects of gender and specific landscape elements-remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: This study adopted a multi-method approach, incorporating psychological assessment via the Perceived Restorativeness

Cannabidiol alters psychophysiological, craving and anxiety responses in an alcohol cue reactivity task: A cross-over randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical studies have demonstrated that cannabidiol (CBD) reduces alcohol-seeking behaviors and may have potential for managing alcohol use disorder (AUD). In this study, we examined the effects of CBD versus placebo on (i) psychophysiological, craving and anxiety responses to alcohol and appetitive cues; (ii) tolerability measures including cognitive functioning. METHODS: Twenty-two non-treatment-seeking individuals with AUD (DSM-5) participated in a cross-over, double-blind, randomized trial, receiving either 800 mg of CBD or matched placebo over 3 days. A laboratory alcohol

Safe and soothed: randomised clinical pilot study on the subjective and psychophysiological impact of a new physiotherapeutic intervention in patients with dissociative disorders.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative disorders frequently co-occur with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet many individuals lack adequate treatment. Existing interventions often prioritise reducing arousal over promoting safety and self-soothing, tending to neglect the bodily experience. AIMS: This randomised clinical within-person pilot study examined the effects of the nest position, a physiotherapeutic intervention designed to enhance safety and self-soothing, on patients with dissociative disorders and healthy controls (German Clinical Trials Register No.: DRKS00030669). METHOD: Eighteen pat

A fuzzy-logic approach for longitudinal assessment of patients' psychophysiological state: an application to upper-limb orthopedic robot-aided rehabilitation.

Understanding the psychophysiological state during robot-aided rehabilitation is crucial for assessing the patient experience during treatments. This paper introduces a psychophysiological estimation approach using a Fuzzy Logic inference model to assess patients' perception of robots during upper-limb robot-aided rehabilitation sessions. The patients were asked to perform nine cycles of 3D point-to-point trajectories toward different targets at varying heights with the assistance of an anthropomorphic robotic arm (i.e. KUKA LWR 4+). Physiological parameters, including galvanic skin response,

Risk of unfavorable pain prognosis impacts walking physiomechanical parameters and psychophysiological workload in sufferers of chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Tolerating physical tasks depends not only on task-specific characteristics but also on an individual's psychophysiological capacity to respond to the imposed load. People suffering from chronic low back pain (CLBP) may experience reduced psychophysiological capacity and are at risk for poor pain prognosis, which could lead to an increased walking workload. AIM: To investigate how the risk of unfavorable pain prognosis in CLBP can impact walking physiomechanical parameters and psychophysiological workload. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study. The study classified 74 vo

Mind the social feedback: effects of tDCS applied to the left DLPFC on psychophysiological responses during the anticipation and reception of social evaluations.

The left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) is implicated in anticipatory (i.e. during anticipation of emotional stimuli) and online (i.e. during confrontation with emotional stimuli) emotion regulatory processes. However, research that investigates the causal role of the lDLPFC in these processes is lacking. In this study, 74 participants received active or sham transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the lDLPFC. Participants were told strangers evaluated them. These (rigged) social evaluations were presented, and in 50% of the trials, participants could anticipate the valenc

Acute effect of high-definition and conventional tDCS on exercise performance and psychophysiological responses in endurance athletes: a randomized controlled trial.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used aiming to boost exercise performance and inconsistent findings have been reported. One possible explanation is related to the limitations of the so-called "conventional" tDCS, which uses large rectangular electrodes, resulting in a diffuse electric field. A new tDCS technique called high-definition tDCS (HD-tDCS) has been recently developed. HD-tDCS uses small ring electrodes and produces improved focality and greater magnitude of its aftereffects. This study tested whether HD-tDCS would improve exercise performance to a greater exte

Psychophysiological mechanisms underlying the failure to speak: a comparison between children with selective mutism and social anxiety disorder on autonomic arousal.

BACKGROUND: Selective mutism (SM) has been conceptualized as an extreme variant of social anxiety disorder (SAD), in which the failure to speak functions as an avoidance mechanism leading to a reduction of intense fear arousal. However, psychophysiological studies in children with SM are scarce and physiological mechanisms underlying the failure to speak are largely unknown. In contrast, children with SAD are characterized by a combination of a chronically elevated physiological arousal and a blunted physiological fear response to social stress. Due to the large overlap between SM and SAD, sim

The Paradox of Fiction Revisited-Improvised Fictional and Real-Life Social Rejections Evoke Associated and Relatively Similar Psychophysiological Responses.

Theatre-based practices, such as improvisation, are frequently applied to simulate everyday social interactions. Although the improvisational context is acknowledged as fictional, realistic emotions may emerge, a phenomenon labelled the 'paradox of fiction'. This study investigated how manipulating the context (real-life versus fictional) modulates psychophysiological reactivity to social rejection during dyadic interactions. We measured psychophysiological responses elicited during real-life (interview) and fictional (improvisation exercises) social rejections. We analysed the heart rate (HR)

The interaction of BDNF Val66Met, PTSD, and child abuse on psychophysiological reactivity and HPA axis function in a sample of Gulf War Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: While the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism has been linked to various psychological disorders, limited focus has been on its relationship to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and early traumas such as child abuse. Therefore, we assessed whether Val66Met was associated with fear potentiated psychophysiological response and HPA axis dysfunction and whether PTSD status or child abuse history moderated these outcomes in a sample of Veterans. METHODS: 226 and 173 participants engaged in a fear potentiated acoustic startle paradigm and a dexamethasone suppression test (DST) respectively.

Are psychophysiological arousal and self-reported emotional stress during an oncological consultation related to memory of medical information? An experimental study.

Patients forget 20-80% of information provided during medical consultations. The emotional stress often experienced by patients during consultations could be one of the mechanisms that lead to limited recall. The current experimental study therefore investigated the associations between (analog) patients' psychophysiological arousal, self-reported emotional stress and their (long term) memory of information provided by the physician. One hundred and eighty one cancer-naïve individuals acted as so-called analog patients (APs), i.e. they were instructed to watch a scripted video-recoding of an o

"Float first and kick for your life": Psychophysiological basis for safety behaviour on accidental short-term cold water immersion.

INTRODUCTION: Accidental cold-water immersion (CWI) evokes the life threatening cold shock response (CSR) which increases the risk of drowning. Consequently, the safety behaviour selected is critical in determining survival; the present advice is to 'float first' and remain stationary (i.e. rest). We examined whether leg only exercise (i.e., treading water; 'CWI-Kick') immediately on CWI could reduce the symptoms of the CSR, offset the reduction in cerebral blood flow that is known to occur and reduce the CSR's symptoms of breathlessness. We also examined whether perceptual responses instincti

Bridging neuroscience and clinical psychology: cognitive behavioral and psychophysiological models in the evaluation and treatment of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Cognitive neuroscience and clinical psychology have long been considered to be separate disciplines. However, the phenomenon of brain plasticity in the context of a psychological intervention highlights the mechanisms of brain compensation and requires linking both clinical cognition and cognitive psychophysiology. A quantifiable normalization of brain activity seems to be correlated with an improvement of the tic symptoms after cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). This article presents broad outlines of the state of the current literature in the …

[A pilot study on the long-term effects of combined drug therapy and psychophysiologically-oriented therapy in patients with severe essential hypertension].

15 patients with a severe degree of essential hypertension, which had not responded satisfactorily to pharmacological management, received an additional regimen of psychophysiological treatment. This schedule consisted of relaxation training, self-recording of the blood pressure by the patients and conversations geared at improving stress management. After 1 year 9 patients showed a lowered mean blood pressure from 162/106 mmHg to 141/95 mmHg (responders). 2 patients were excluded from the study and 4 patients failed to show any lowering of their blood pressure (non-responders). In 6 responder

Comparative studies on the effects of the combination drug lorazepam plus diphenhydramine (Somnium) versus lorazepam on the noopsyche, thymopsyche and psychophysiology in nonorganic insomnia related to generalized anxiety disorder.

In a double-blind, parallel-group design study on hypnotic and anxiolytic effects of the combination drug Somnium (lorazepam 1 mg + diphenhydramine 25 mg) (SOM) as compared with 1 mg lorazepam (LOR) alone, daytime behavioral effects were studied in 44 patients with nonorganic insomnia related to a mild generalized anxiety disorder. After a placebo run-in phase of 1 week, they received active treatment for 4 weeks. Psychometric evaluations included 6 thymopsychic variables (somatic complaints, state anxiety, trait anxiety, self-rating anxiety and depression scale and adjective mood scale), 6 no
