Minimizing nonspecific cellular binding of quantum dots with hydroxyl-derivatized surface coatings.

Quantum-dot (QD) nanocrystals are promising fluorescent probes for multiplexed staining assays in biological applications. However, nonspecific QD binding to cellular membranes and proteins remains a limiting factor in detection sensitivity and specificity. Here we report a new class of hydroxyl (-OH)-coated QDs for minimizing nonspecific cellular binding and for overcoming the bulky size problems encountered with previous surface coatings. The hydroxylated QDs are prepared from carboxylated (-COOH) dots via a hydroxylation and cross-linking process. With a compact hydrodynamic size of 13-14 n

Minimizing the hydrodynamic size of quantum dots with multifunctional multidentate polymer ligands.

We report a new strategy to minimize the hydrodynamic size of quantum dots (QDs) and to overcome their colloidal stability and photobleaching problems based on the use of multifunctional and multidentate polymer ligands. A novel finding is that a balanced composition of thiol (-SH) and amine (-NH 2) coordinating groups grafted to a linear polymer chain leads to highly compact nanocrystals with exceptional colloidal stability, a strong resistance to photobleaching, and high fluorescence quantum yields. In contrast to the standing brushlike conformation of PEGylated dihydrolipoic acid molecules,…

Confocal, three-dimensional tracking of individual quantum dots in high-background environments.

We demonstrate a custom confocal fluorescence-microscope that is capable of tracking individual quantum dots undergoing three-dimensional Brownian motion (diffusion coefficient approximately 0.5 microm(2)/s) in environments with a signal-to-background ratio as low as 2:1, significantly worse than observed in a typical cellular environment. By utilizing a pulsed excitation source and time-correlated single photon counting, the time-resolved photon stream can be used to determine changes in the emission lifetime as a function of position and positively identify single quantum dots via photon-pai…

Electronic States of Single Perovskite Quantum Dots in Weak and Strong Interaction Regimes: Implications in Electrically Pumped Quantum Emitters.

We investigate the effect of Coulomb interactions on the electronic states of a single perovskite quantum dot (PQD), CsPbBr3, through scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S). Under a weak interaction regime, where the time-averaged occupation of electrons in a PQD remains zero, the peaks observed in the differential tunneling conductance (dI/dV) spectrum correspond to the single-particle density of states (DOS) without any electron-electron correlation. However, with a shorter tunnel distance between the STM tip and PQD, additional electrons are trapped in the QD, leading to a stron

Synthesis of Metal-Quantum Dot Core-Satellite Nanoparticles and Plasmonic Cavity-Induced Recovery of Quantum Yield for High External Quantum Efficiency.

Quantum dots (QDs) have been extensively studied for their unique optical and electronic properties arising from quantum confinement. In particular, less toxic and environment-friendly InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs have been successfully commercialized in display devices, but their low absorption characteristic still limits external quantum efficiency (EQE). As multidirectional structural engineering has brought internal quantum yield (QY) close to unity, further improvements in EQE now depend on enhancing light absorption, often achieved via photonic cavities integrated with plasmonic materials. However, …

Single-photon controlled phase shifts with colloidal quantum dots at room temperature.

Quantum logic gates based on quantum electrodynamics (QED) in strong coupling regime between quantum dots and microcavities are key elements for scalable quantum computing and all-optical quantum networks. Here, a single colloidal quantum dot was site-selectively positioned onto a dielectric photonic crystal hybrid microcavity using a soft nanoprobe technique, enabling the study of strong coupling between the colloidal quantum dots and bound states in the continuum in the cavity. By combining photoluminescence spectroscopy, Michelson interferometry, and continuous-wave pump-probe technology, t…

Charge Transfer between Quantum Dots and Redox Molecules Is Not Auger-Assisted.

Charge transfer between quantum dots (QDs) and redox molecules is not well described by the Marcus theory, the hall-mark theory for charge transfer in molecular systems. The Marcus inverted region, where the rate decreases with increasing the free energy difference, has never been observed in QDs. The previously reported hypothesis for the absence of the Marcus inverted region in QDs is an Auger-assisted charge transfer pathway, which we refer to as the "Auger hypothesis". Here, we show that the Auger hypothesis does not hold to experimental tests. We measured the rate constants for two proces…

Heteroatom-doped MXene quantum dots: red emission tuning and dual-functional performance.

BACKGROUND: Ti3C2Tx MXene-derived quantum dots (MQDs) have attracted increasing interest due to their tunable photoluminescence and abundant surface-active sites, enabling applications in optical sensing and photocatalysis. Modulating the emission wavelength and improving light-harvesting efficiency remain central challenges for expanding their functionality under visible-light conditions. Heteroatom doping offers a promising route to engineer the electronic structure and emission behavior of MQDs. Nevertheless, a systematic strategy to simultaneously achieve long-wavelength emission, high qua…

Electrical Switching of the Berry Phase in Bernal Bilayer Graphene Quantum Dots.

The Berry phase-a fundamental quantum geometric phase given by the integral of the Berry curvature over a closed trajectory in momentum space-underlies a wide range of quantum topological phenomena. Recent advances have demonstrated the potential of tuning the Berry phase to access exotic quantum states, primarily by modifying the integration path. However, its definition also suggests an alternative, yet largely unexplored route: the direct control of the Berry curvature itself. Here, we realize continuous modulation of the Berry curvature in the Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene quantum dot by

Electronic energy levels in quantum dots with weakly modulated spherical-harmonic surfaces.

The precise control of quantum dot (QD) geometry is crucial for tailoring their optoelectronic properties, yet an exact analytical description of non-spherical nanoparticles remains mathematically challenging. In this work, we present a comprehensive theoretical framework to calculate the electronic energy spectra of QDs with arbitrary weakly modulated spherical-harmonic surfaces. Utilizing the perturbation theory up to the second order, we derive analytical expressions for the energy corrections. The important feature of our approach is the explicit incorporation of Wigner 3j-symbols, which e

Carbon Quantum Dots-Enhanced Polyvinyl Alcohol: A Comprehensive Approach to Food Preservation.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a promising biodegradable matrix for food packaging but suffers from high hydrophilicity, high water vapor permeability, and a lack of active functionalities. To overcome these limitations, recent research incorporates zero-dimensional carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as active nanomaterials. This review evaluates the physical, transport, and preservative synergies of CQD/PVA composite matrices. Integrating uniform CQDs reduces matrix wettability through dense intermolecular hydrogen bonding with PVA hydroxyl groups, as evidenced by a 26.16% increase in water contact angle…

Shell-thickness-modulated electrochemiluminescence of colloidal quantum dots for ultrasensitive PSA detection.

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensors hold great promise for clinical diagnostics, yet their performance is often constrained by the limited efficiency and stability of available luminophores in complex biological matrices. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as attractive alternatives to conventional emitters, but a systematic understanding of how wavefunction engineering via core/shell architecture governs ECL behavior and thus biosensing performance remains elusive. Herein, we reveal that the asymmetric carrier distribution in QDs gives rise to a geometry-dependent ECL response. W…

Direct upcycling of expired metformin tablets into non-cytotoxic carbon quantum dots.

The accumulation of expired pharmaceuticals represents an increasing environmental challenge and highlights the need for sustainable waste valorization strategies. In this work, expired metformin tablets were directly upcycled into fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) without prior extraction of the active pharmaceutical ingredient, demonstrating a simple and environmentally responsible approach to converting pharmaceutical waste into value-added carbon nanomaterials. CQDs were synthesized using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method with real-time temperature and pressure monitoring. A tw…

Quantum Dots for Assessment of ROS Accumulation During Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, and Chemoradiotherapy.

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanoparticles ranging in size from 2 to 10 nm. QDs are increasingly being developed for biomedical imaging, targeted drug delivery, and green energy technology. Here, we describe the novel utilization of biocompatible (CdSe)/ZnS core/shell semiconductor nanoparticles for assessment of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the context of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, both of which are important modalities in the treatment of cancer. Computational simulations done using COMSOL Multiphysics confirm some of the properties of the QDs used in the described experiment…

Red, Green and Blue Liquid-Film Lasers Based on Colloidal Quantum-Dots.

Colloidal quantum dots (cQD) are heralded for their tunable bandgaps, solution-processibility, and cost-effectiveness, making them ideal candidates for lasing applications. However, previous cQD lasing demonstrations have largely depended on close-packed solid-state films, which are deemed essential to counteract the rapid decay of material gain. In this study, a novel approach is introduced utilizing "entropic ligands and solvent" to enhance the solubility of cQDs in solution. By achieving the necessary critical volume fraction for lasing, this strategy leads to the groundbreaking development…

Stable, Efficient, and Scalable Multicolor Lasing from Colloidal Quantum Dots in Liquids.

Liquid-state optical gain media are desired for high-power lasing applications due to their easier heat management than solid-state media, as well as for the emerging field of optofluidics. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are solution-processed materials that carry many attractive properties suitable for liquid lasing. To date, however, their lasing action is often achieved in close-packed films, as a high volume fraction of QDs is required for stimulated emission to outpace the ultrafast Auger decay of gain-active multiexciton states. Here we report liquid lasing from color-tunable (red, orange,…

Electro-Mechanically Tunable, Waveguide-Coupled Photonic-Crystal Cavities with Embedded Quantum Dots.

On-chip microcavities with embedded quantum emitters provide an excellent platform for high-performance quantum technologies. A major difficulty for such devices is overcoming the detrimental effects of fluctuations in the device dimensions caused by the limitations of the fabrication processes. We present a system based on a 1D photonic-crystal cavity with an embedded quantum dot. A microelectromechanical cantilever is used to tune the cavity mode wavelength via index modulation and the quantum-confined Stark effect is used to tune the quantum dot emission energy, thus mitigating the effect o
