Racial-ethnic disparities in exposure to air pollution in the United States (US) are well documented. Studies on the causes of these disparities highlight unequal systems of power and longstanding systemic racism-for example, redlining, white flight, and racial covenants-which reinforced racial segregation and wealth gaps and which concentrated polluting land uses in communities of color. Our analysis is based on empirical estimates of ambient concentrations for two important pollutants (NO2 and PM2.5). We show that spatially decomposed concentrations can be used to infer and quantify types of…

BACKGROUND: Migrant workers in the United States have extremely poor health. This paper aims to identify ways in which the social context of … erarchy, migrant farm workers often being blamed for their own sicknesses.
CONCLUSIONS: Structural racism and anti-immigrant practices determine the poor working conditions, living conditions, and health of migrant workers. Subtle racism serves to reduce awareness of this social context for all involved, including clinicians. The paper concludes with st …

Alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for death and disability, disproportionately harming disadvantaged groups. While a positive association between interpersonal discrimination and alcohol use is established, structural discrimination's impact remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review of the association between macro-level structural discrimination and alcohol consumption or related health outcomes. We searched four databases and grey literature, identifying 25 eligible studies, which considered racism (n = 11), sexism (n = 7), heterosexism (n = 4), and intersectional discrimina…

Using my personal story, I reflect on the history of the field of child development from the 1970's to the present. I recount how far have we come…but also, how far we still have to go on creating a literature where contextual forces, such as racism and other sources of oppression are considered at the core rather than the perifery of research with minoritized BILPOC (Black, Indigenous, Latinx, People of Color) families and children. As scholars of color, we not only have had to conduct/fund/publish research and teach, but also push our institutions and organizations to create the systemic and…

Work using the First-Person Shooter task (FPST, also referred to as the "Police Officers Dilemma") shows that cultural stereotypes play an integral role in influencing decisions to engage in shooting behaviors during a mock shooter simulation. Knowledge of the Black-violent stereotype typically leads White participants to have a quicker response to "shoot" armed Black target and falsely shoot unarmed Black targets, compared with White targets. Because this task constrains response options to shoot or not shoot, it is unclear what role structural and environmental factors may play in modulating

This study explores the process of becoming-scientist-with, a dynamic and relational concept that redefines science identity development as a nonlinear, evolving journey. Focused on a Black male student, Travis, the study examines how his science identity was shaped through entanglements with various material and discursive forces across multiple science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEMM) learning spaces. Becoming-scientist-with is conceptualized as a continual negotiation of identity within these environments, emphasizing the roles of power, systemic racism, and institutiona…

I briefly describe my work on race and racism, and the psychology of diversity. Two key aims have been expanding graduate training for students of color and expanding the focus of scientific theorizing, research, and applications in psychology. I argue that history is important for understanding race-related conflict and progress and that cultural context is both a source of obstacles to inclusion (cultural racism) and an important asset in resisting and coping with these obstacles (resilience). I describe ways in which my career represents "doing diversity." Specifically, I have (a) helped di…

IMPORTANCE: Black people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) report poor health and lower service use compared with their White counterparts. Structural racism, neighborhood segregation in particular, has been identified as a potential barrier to equitable service use, but empirical investigations remain limited.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between race/ethnicity and neighborhood-level segregation on the use of outpatient occupational therapy and physical therapy and home health services among people with IDD.
DESIGN: A secondary data analysis, using weighted two…

PURPOSE: Structural racism and homonegativity influence access to housing and shape the HIV risk environment. We assess disparities in mortgage loan denial and evaluate the association of intersectional mortgage discrimination with HIV incidence among sexual minority men (SMM) across U.S. counties.
METHODS: Using loan applications from 2018-2022, we conducted a decomposition analysis to measure national disparities in mortgage denial by race and sexual orientation. We then constructed a county-level measure of mortgage discrimination against Black same-sex male couples using mixed-effects log…

Black/African American women with breast and gynecologic cancers face stark end-of-life (EOL) inequities rooted in structural racism, gendered oppression, and financial toxicity. Despite abundant evidence of outcome gaps, theory-driven guidance for equitable, culturally responsive EOL care is limited. This narrative review argues for integrating Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Critical Feminist Theory (CFT) into EOL care frameworks to address the cultural and financial needs of Black/African American women. Drawing on interdisciplinary literature from healthcare, philosophy, sociology, and econ…

BACKGROUND: Black patients seeking addiction care experience poorer treatment access, retention, and outcomes when compared to White counterparts. Black patients may have elevated group-based medical mistrust, which has been associated with poorer health outcomes and increased experiences of racism across multiple healthcare contexts. The relationship between group-based medical mistrust and expectations for addiction treatment among Black individuals remains untested.
METHODS: A total of 143 Black participants were recruited from two addiction treatment centers in Columbus, Ohio. Participant…

Systemic racism and structural oppression are key drivers of health inequities, shaping substance use patterns and contributing to disproportionate harms among Black communities. While racial discrimination has been recognized as a chronic psychosocial stressor, its impact on substance use has rarely been examined through the lens of racial trauma - a critical psychological embodiment of structural oppression. This study investigates whether racial trauma symptoms mediate the relationship between racial discrimination and substance use (alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis) among Black adults. A sam…

BACKGROUND: Racism is a driver of community health disparities, and there is a dearth of evidence-based multilevel antiracism interventions developed in partnership with community constituents. Community-engaged systems science defines intervention points within complex systems and was utilized for early-phase multilevel intervention development within the ORBIT translational model to improve type 2 diabetes (T2DM) management among Black patients in the South.
METHODS: Group model-building sessions were conducted with five primary care physicians, thirteen nurses, six support staff, and nine …

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is often understood to manifest based on individuals' core values, with symptom themes reflecting that which is personally meaningful and therefore threatening. Identity-related OCD themes - including pathological fears or doubts related to sexual orientation, gender identity, racism, disability/diagnostic status, aging, and poverty - may be particularly shaped by the values guided by sociocultural contexts. The United States provides a useful context for examining these cultural intersections, as culturally similar communities have historically clustered ac…

We evaluated the role of the neurotoxicant lead (Pb) in mediating racial disparities in later-life cognition in 1,085 non-Hispanic Black and 2,839 non-Hispanic white participants in NHANES (1999-2002, 2011-2014) 60+ years of age. Concurrent cognition (processing speed, sustained attention, working memory) was measured by the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) and a global measure combining four cogn…

Personality and psychological traits are known to influence how individuals react to and cope with stress, and thus, have downstream health and aging consequences. However, research considering psychological health traits as individual-level difference factors moderating the links been racism-related stress and health for racial and ethnic minorities in the United States is rare.
