Argon beam coagulation for treatment of symptomatic radiation-induced proctitis.

BACKGROUND: Radiation proctitis is a complication of radiotherapy for malignant pelvic disease. Argon beam coagulation is a new and rapidly evolving technology that permits a "no-touch" electrocoagulation of diseased tissue. METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively the records of 7 patients with prostatic and endometrial cancers treated with irrradiation (median radiation dose was 6840 cGy, range 2400 to 7200 cGy). The median time to onset of symptoms after the conclusion of radiotherapy was 20 months (range 16 to 48 months); symptoms consisted of rectal bleeding and tenesmus in all patients. The

Treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma by radioembolization using 90Y microspheres.

The use of external beam radiation therapy for primary treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been limited by the low radiation tolerance of the non-tumoral liver. However, technical advances allowing partial liver volume external irradiation have resulted in consistently high response rates. Internal radiation therapy, also called (90)Y radioembolization ((90)Y-RE), consists in delivering implantable microspheres labeled with (90)Y into the arteries that feed liver tumors in order to provide a high dose of radiation to tumor nodules irrespective of their number, size and location, wh…

Proton-specific dose and radiation quality constraints to reduce acute oral mucositis in head and neck cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is one of the most frequent and impairing toxicities in head and neck cancer patients. The current clinical mitigation strategy for RIOM relies on photon-derived dosimetric constraints normalized by the proton generic relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of 1.1, and applied to the mean dose at the oral cavity. The approach neglects any dependence of toxicity on organ volume effects and radiation quality. In the present study, we provide a comprehensive characterization of RIOM in proton therapy patients, and develop proton-specific constra

Upright 3D treatment planning using a vertical CT.

In this report, we describe a novel technique used to plan and administer external beam radiation therapy to a patient in the upright position. A patient required reirradiation for thymic carcinoma but was unable to tolerate the supine position due to bilateral phrenic nerve injury and paralysis of the diaphragm. Computed tomography (CT) images in the upright position were acquired at the Northern Illinois University Institute for Neutron Therapy at Fermilab. The CT data were imported into a standard 3-dimensional (3D) treatment planning system. Treatment was designed to deliver 24 Gy to the t

A Kangfuxin-Loaded Lipid Gel for the Management of Radiation Dermatitis: Repair and Protection.

Radiation therapy often causes oxidative stress and inflammation in normal tissues due to the generation of excessive radiation-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS). This can subsequently lead to radiation-induced skin injury (RISI), which manifests as tissue damage ranging from dermatitis to ulcers. One approach to addressing these challenges is to develop biocompatible functional materials that can facilitate repair and improve treatment tolerance by neutralizing ROS. In this study, a water-responsive lipid gel (LG) delivery system was constructed using Kangfuxin liquid (KFX, the ethanol ex

Beam attenuators and the risk of unrecognized large-fraction irradiation of critical tissues.

The use of radiation beam attenuators led to radiation injury of the spinal cord in one patient and of the peripheral nerve in another due to unsuspected large-fraction irradiation. The anatomic distribution of radiation dose was reconstructed in the sagittal plane for the patient who developed radiation myelopathy and in the axial plane for the patient who developed peripheral neuropathy. The actual dose delivered to the injured structure in each patient was taken from the dose distribution and recorded along with the time, number of fractions, and dose per fraction. The patient who developed

Intrarectal application of formalin for chronic radiation proctitis: a simple, cheap and effective treatment.

BACKGROUND: Chronic radiation proctitis is known to be a difficult to treat condition. Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC) though being effective requires prolonged sessions and has limited availability. Formalin, by virtue of its chemical cauterizing effects, has been found to be effective in patients with bleeding radiation cystitis and hemorrhagic proctitis. Our goal was to study the effectiveness of 4% formalin instillation in resistant patients of chronic hemorrhagic radiation proctitis. METHODS: 13 patients with chronic radiation proctitis were treated with instillation of 50 mi 4% formalin

Radiation-Induced Interfacial Degradation and Mechanical Reliability of Sn-Based Solder Joints: A Systematic Review.

Solder joints in aerospace, nuclear, and defense electronics are increasingly exposed to ionizing radiation, which creates serious reliability issues. Despite its importance, a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms and how they vary across radiation types remains lacking. This systematic literature review synthesizes 24 peer-reviewed studies (2000-2025) to evaluate radiation-induced microstructural evolution and mechanical degradation in Sn-based solder alloys. Following PRISMA guidelines, data were analyzed across gamma, electron, proton, neutron, and alpha irradiation, cov

The evolving role of reirradiation in the management of recurrent brain tumors.

Despite aggressive management consisting of surgery, radiation therapy (RT), and systemic therapy given alone or in combination, a significant proportion of patients with brain tumors will experience tumor recurrence. For these patients, no standard of care exists and management of either primary or metastatic recurrent tumors remains challenging.Advances in imaging and RT technology have enabled more precise tumor localization and dose delivery, leading to a reduction in the volume of health brain tissue exposed to high radiation doses. Radiation techniques have evolved from three-dimensional

Photothermal targeting of lactate metabolism reverses radioresistance via disrupting the immunosuppressive barrier.

Radiotherapy (RT) is frequently compromised by radioresistance and insufficient immunogenicity. Multiomics analysis here identifies a significant association between glycolysis and DNA damage repair, linking them to RT resistance and poor patient survival. To address this, we develop a mild thermia-guided radiosensitizer, GQD@PDA/Au, which reprograms glycolytic metabolism upon photothermal stimulation to inhibit lactate accumulation. Reduced lactate levels aggravate DNA damage and dsDNA breaks, thereby enhancing tumor radio-immunogenicity by activating the cGAS-STING pathway, inducing tumor IC

DNA damage and cell death induced by exposure to ultra-high dose rate low-dose pulsed X-rays emitted from a kilojoule plasma focus device.

BACKGROUND: FLASH radiotherapy, characterized by ultra-high dose rates (> 40 Gy/s), potentially spares normal tissues while maintaining antitumor efficacy (the FLASH effect). While electron and proton FLASH are explored, pulsed X-ray sources like plasma focus devices offer unique possibilities. Previous work has reported hyper-radiosensitivity in colorectal cancer cells exposed to ultra-high-dose-rate pulsed X-rays from a kilojoule plasma focus (PF) device, without significant effects on non-cancerous cells. This study further investigates the biological effects of ultra-high-dose-rate (~ 10⁷

Exosome-mediated modulation of radioresistance: The radiation-induced bystander effect in prostate cancer cells.

Exosomes are involved in intracellular communication and mediate the radiation-induced bystander effect (RIBE). We assessed the ability of exosomes to modify the radiation response of PC3 and DU145 prostate cancer cells exposed to X-rays. Irradiated cells were analyzed using clonogenic survival and apoptosis assays, while exosome-stimulated cells were evaluated for γH2AX immunostaining, immunoblotting, and apoptosis. Exosomes were isolated via size exclusion chromatography (SEC), characterized by nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) and immunoblotting, and ranged from 130 to 137 nm, containing
