OBJECTIVES: The present study was undertaken to detect and compare the pattern of collagen fibers in odontogenic cysts and also to find out if this methodology could be used to predict the aggressive nature of odontogenic cysts by comparing with the odontogenic tumors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The collagen in the wall of 11 odontogenic keratocysts, 14 dentigerous cysts and 14 radicular cysts was studied histochemically by staining sections with picrosirius red and examining under polarizing microscope. In this study of 108 periapical lesions, the incidence, the relation of lesion size to the incidence, the diagnosis and the correspondence between radiographic and histopathologic diagnoses were investigated. A competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method was used to measure the concentration of lactoferrin in fluids from 36 odontogenic keratocysts, 15 dentigerous cysts, and 30 radicular/residual cysts. Radicular cysts are commonly found odontogenic cysts in the jaws. The lesion is diagnosed mainly in young patients during the second decade of life. In the majority of cases, it is asymptomatic. This paper reports a rare case in which traumatic occlusion was identified as the etiology of a radicular cyst. Endodontic treatment was performed and the traumatic occlusion also was corrected. A six-month follow-up appointment found good healing of the periapical region.

Occurrence of ganglion cysts in the spine is extremely rare. Common symptoms include intermittent lumbar pain and pain at night. Neurological examination to distinguish from other etiologies of radicular pain may be difficult. The L4-L5 level is the most common sight of occurrence. Radiographically, degenerative changes, particularly spondylolisthesis, are a common finding. MRI appearance of the cysts is variable, according to the composition of the cyst. A ganglion cyst should be considered in the differential of radicular pain in the presence of degenerative changes of the lumbar spine.

A case and review of the pathogenesis of a large radicular cyst has been presented. The radicular cyst is a common finding in dental practice, but is usually confined to the apical area of one to two teeth. Large destructive lesions are uncommon. A thorough clinical and radiographic evaluation should always be completed before dental or surgical intervention is performed and all excised tissue should be examined microscopically.
