We report a case of an apico-aortic bioprothesis-valved conduit for a 70-year-old-woman with symptomatic, severe aortic stenosis and severe calcification of the ascending aorta. Between 1976 and 1988, 135 patients with solar keratosis (SK) and 53 patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) on the sun-exposed skin, but without apparent preceding diseases such as burn scars, chronic radiodermatitis, chronic arsenic poisoning, or xeroderma pigmentosum, were encountered. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of oral supplementation as a radioprotective intervention in the management of radiation dermatitis (RD).
METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Six databases and the gray literature were searched for randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs). Meta-analysis was performed only with studies that evaluated the same intervention. Methodology of included studies was evaluated by the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2.0), and the certainty of evidence was assessed by the GRADE instrument.

This toolkit offers guidance and education for supporting patients with radiotherapy-induced skin reactions. Early evaluation has shown it to benefit staff at all levels, with and without specialist knowledge, in a variety of settings. It provides a framework that helps staff to do "the right thing, at the right time, in the right way" based on practice and evidence (Byrne et al, 2010; NHS Quality Improvement Scotland, 2010). It will be reviewed and updated as new evidence for managing radiotherapy-induced skin reactions becomes available.

Radiation recall represents the 'recalling' of an effect similar in appearance to that of an acute radiation reaction in a previously irradiated field. The recall is triggered by the administration of certain drugs days to years after the exposure to ionizing radiation. This review focuses almost exclusively on the skin manifestations of radiation recall to assemble the largest data base upon which to discuss this rare phenomenon. No absolute radiation dose threshold is apparent, but rather an interplay between dose and time before drug exposure seems to affect both the risk and speed of onset

As many as 95% of patients treated with radiation therapy for cancer will experience a skin reaction. Some reactions are immediate, while others may be later (e.g., months after treatment). Therefore, nurses must be familiar with management of this side effect. This paper reviews current knowledge related to skin reactions from ionizing radiation and recommends guidelines for nursing practice.
