Spatial assignment of emissions using a new locomotive emissions model.

Estimates of fuel use and air pollutant emissions from freight rail currently rely highly on aggregate methods and largely obsolete data which offer little insight into contemporary air quality problems. Because the freight industry is for the most part privately held and data are closely guarded for competitive reasons, the challenge is to produce robust estimates using current reporting requirements, while accurately portraying the spatial nature of freight rail impacts. This research presents a new spatially resolved model for estimating air pollutant emissions (hydrocarbons, carbon monoxid

Estimating national exhaust emissions from railway vehicles in Turkey.

The estimated exhaust emissions from railway vehicles in Turkey were presented. The emissions of nitrogen oxides (NO(X)), hydrocarbon compounds (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) and carbon dioxide (CO(2)) from the diesel locomotives and railcars were calculated using the railway traffic data recorded by Turkish State Railways (TSR) for the period of 2000-2005. EPA emission factors were used for different vehicle types and operation modes such as shunting and line-hauling. Total emissions from railway vehicles in Turkey were estimated as 384 t y(-1) for

Rapid assessment of exposure to chlorine released from a train derailment and resulting health impact.

OBJECTIVES: After a train derailment released approximately 60 tons of chlorine from a ruptured tanker car, a multiagency team performed a rapid assessment of the health impact to determine morbidity caused by the chlorine and evaluate the effect of this mass-casualty event on health-care facilities. METHODS: A case was defined as death or illness related to chlorine exposure. Investigators gathered information on exposure, treatment received, and outcome through patient questionnaires and medical record review. An exposure severity rating was assigned to each patient based on description of

Impact of Railway Delay Announcements on Suicide-Related Associations, Emotions, and Announcement Appreciation.

Background: Previous research has showed that exposure to a postsuicide railway announcement stating that a delay was due to a collision with a person yielded suicide associations and negative emotions. In 2021, the Dutch Railways implemented a new announcement that simply stated a collision had occurred, but its impact has not yet been tested. Aims: This follow-up study investigates the impact of this new announcement on suicide-related explicit associations, negative and positive emotions, and announcement appreciation. We compare it to the previously used announcement collision with a perso

Residential exposure to road and railway traffic noise and incidence of dementia: The UK Biobank cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence linking noise pollution and brain health, particularly at mid-to-late life, remains scarce. We investigated the associations between long-term exposure to road and railway traffic noise and incident dementia in the UK Biobank cohort. METHODS: Participants with available data for dementia incidence and linked traffic noise exposure during follow-up were included. Residential road traffic noise from both minor and major roads were calculated in accordance with CNOSSOS-EU framework; railway noise estimates were created by Extrium, with the raster datasets representing noise

High-speed train drivers' human error under fatigue and stress: the role of situation awareness and individual differences.

Fatigue and stress are critical variables that impair railway train drivers' safety performance, and individual differences may influence these effects. This study investigates how fatigue and stress affect high-speed train drivers' human error and the role of individual differences. We hypothesised that situation awareness (SA) mediates the effects of fatigue and stress on human error, and individual differences (age and work experience) moderate these effects. We surveyed 1,391 male drivers from eight Chinese railway bureaus and used PROCESS Macro for data analysis. The results revealed that

Jumping, lying, wandering: analysis of suicidal behaviour patterns in 1,004 suicidal acts on the German railway net.

Current knowledge on behavioural patterns and personal characteristics of subjects who choose the railway as means of suicide is sparse. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of three distinct behaviour patterns (jumping, lying, wandering) in railway suicides and to explore associated variables. Cases were derived from the National Central Registry of person accidents on the German railway net covering the period from 2002 to 2006. A retrospective analysis of registry protocols of all 4127 suicidal acts allowed classification of behaviour patterns in 1004 cases. Types of suicida

Effects of EMDR psychotherapy on 99mTc-HMPAO distribution in occupation-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a derangement of mood control with involuntary, emotionally fraught recollections that may follow deep psychological trauma in susceptible individuals. This condition is treated with pharmacological and/or cognitive therapies as well as psychotherapy with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). However, only a very limited number of studies have been published dealing with work-related PTSD, and investigations on the effect of treatment on cerebral blood flow represent an even smaller number. AIM: To investigate the short-term

The effect of major railway accidents on the psychological health of train drivers--I. Acute psychological responses to accident.

The acute psychological reactions of 101 train drivers to on-the-track accidents were studied by means of clinical interviews and questionnaires (Impact of Event Scale, GHQ-20 and a questionnaire addressing stress symptoms, pre-accident expectancies and worries). More than half of the train drivers reported moderate to high intrusive distress (mean 11.3) within hours to days after the accident but only 1/3 reported symptoms of acute psychophysiological arousal. Intrusive symptoms related to visual impressions were most frequently reported. Avoidance was less prevalent (mean 8.8). Clinical inte

Effects of spirometry standards in two occupational cohorts.

Characteristics of subjects with nonreproducible lung function tests (test failures) are described in two studies of occupational respiratory disease. According to current guidelines for spirometry, subjects with test failure are excluded from analyses of epidemiologic pulmonary function data. Among 415 Chinese cotton textile workers, the prevalence of byssinosis was 5.8% for subjects with repeatable tests and 13.3% for subjects with test failure. In regression analysis, the estimate of the association between cotton dust exposure and FEV1 decreased when subjects with test failure were exclude

Reduction in suicides and suicide attempts following implementation of AI-based video surveillance in the Stockholm metro system: an intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Over 700,000 suicides occurring globally each year are a major public health issue. Railways and metros provide a lethal means of suicide, mainly occurring by persons under train (PUT) events. Restriction of means has been shown to be effective in reducing suicides and is increasingly being prioritized in railway settings, e.g., using physical barriers. Here, we instead investigated the changes in suicidal behavior on metro platforms following the implementation of an AI-based CCTV detection system. METHODS: We used longitudinal data about PUT due to suicidality in the Swedish met

Impacts of port and locomotive-related air pollution on respiratory symptoms within vulnerable communities in Southern California.

The increasing operations of port craft and railway locomotives pose significant environmental and health challenges to vulnerable communities in California, where disadvantaged populations often bear a disproportionate burden of pollution exposure. This study employs digital inhaler sensors to monitor individual respiratory health and quantify the impacts of air pollution from port craft and railway activities on rescue medication use. Combining spatially resolved emissions data with meteorological inputs, we utilized advanced dispersion modeling to estimate pollution levels, focusing on fine
