Factors influencing long-term regression after posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens implantation for moderate to high myopia.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the factors affecting the long-term regression after posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (Visian ICL; STAAR Surgical) implantation for myopia. DESIGN: Retrospective observational case series. METHODS: We retrospectively examined 60 eyes of 35 consecutive patients (age, 38.4 ± 9.3 years [mean ± standard deviation]) with myopic refractive errors of -4.00 to -15.25 diopters (D) undergoing ICL implantation. We assessed the amount of myopic regression from 1 month to 6 years after surgery. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was used to assess the factors affecting th

Incidence of cystoid macular edema following scleral buckling procedure.

Sixty eyes of 58 patients who underwent scleral buckling procedures were prospectively evaluated with postoperative fluorescein angiograms. Forty-three percent of these eyes showed angiographic cystoid macular edema (CME). Aphakic patients showed a 64% incidence of cystect the final visual acuity of aphakic patients but significantly reduced the visual recovery in the phakic group. The incidence of CME was not related to preoperative foveal detachment, duration of aphakia, duration of detachment, surgical approach, or refraction.

[Infections after intraocular lens surgery: implications for refractive surgery].

Apart from the classical indication of removing an opaque lens that is compromising vision, extraction of the crystalline lens is gaining increasing importance as a refractive procedure. This literature review which considers the present guidelines of various ophthalmological societies and recently published studies is intended to give an estimate of the incidence of postoperative endophthalmitis and evidence-based recommendations for its prophylaxis, diagnosis, and therapy. The incidence of endophthalmitis after cataract extraction is reported to be 0.04% to 0.3% in most sizeable studies. Imm

[Value the correction of corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery].

The aim of modern micro-incision phacoemulsification combined with foldable intraocular lens implantation and femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery is evolving from a simple pursuit of recuperation to a refractive procedure, which involves the correction of ametropia according to preoperative and postoperative refractive conditions, especially corneal astigmatism, in order to achieve the goal of optimized postoperative uncorrected full range of vision. Nowadays, due attention to the effect of preoperative corneal astigmatism, surgery-induced astigmatism and residual astigmatism after ope

Glaucoma risks in advanced corneal surgery.

Penetrating corneal transplant (PKP) surgery has been performed for centuries as the procedure of choice to restore vision in cases of advanced corneal disease. However, the last two decades have seen the introduction of lamellar corneal surgery (deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty, DALK; Descemet stripping-automated endothelial keratoplasty, DSAEK; and Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty, DMEK) which has shown several advantages over PKP and has rapidly gained popularity, given its benefits. Glaucoma after corneal graft surgery is an important cause of visual loss and graft failure. Th

Multimodal diagnostics for keratoconus and ectatic corneal diseases: a paradigm shift.

Different diagnostic approaches for ectatic corneal diseases (ECD) include screening, diagnosis confirmation, classification of the ECD type, severity staging, prognostic evaluation, and clinical follow-up. The comprehensive assessment must start with a directed clinical history. However, multimodal imaging tools, including Placido-disk topography, Scheimpflug three-dimensional (3D) tomography, corneal biomechanical evaluations, and layered (or segmental) tomography with epithelial thickness by optical coherence tomography (OCT), or digital very high-frequency ultrasound (dVHF-US) serve as fun

Corneal Sensitivity After Ocular Surgery.

The cornea is densely innervated with free nerve endings to provide a high level of sensitivity to foreign bodies or noxious substances. They also provide trophic support to the tissues of the cornea and facilitate their repair and replacement. Any reduction in the function of the nerve endings through disease, contact lens wear, or surgery may lead to corneal disease, damage, or reduced healing. Assessment of the corneal nerve function can be made by the use of specialized instruments (aesthesiometers) that stimulate the corneal nerves using different modalities-mechanical, chemical, and ther
