Extracellular polymeric substances enhanced photosynthesis over respiration in Microcystis aeruginosa.

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play a critical role in Microcystis-dominated freshwater cyanobacterial blooms. However, the mechanisms through which EPS affects Microcystis photosynthesis, respiration, and further affects its growth are not understood completely. To address this, we investigated the effects of varying EPS concentrations on the physiological processes of Microcystis aeruginosa. The results demonstrated that increasing EPS concentrations significantly enhanced both cell density and energy fixation efficiency, accompanied by a reduction in CO2 emission flux. Specificall…

A Lecithin Liposome Stimulates Soil Microbial Respiration and Nitrate Immobilization.

Liposomes are microscale lipid vesicles used in pharmaceuticals, food products, and most recently, agriculture. Several studies have shown t … g soil extractable nitrate (NO3 --N) and ammonium (NH4 +-N). Liposome additions increased microbial respiration and resulted in rapid soil NO3 --N immobilization, suggesting that liposomes may be a tool to immobilize N and reduce agricultural N losses.

Respiration-Induced Displacements of Abdominal Aortic Branches-An MRI Study.

Introduction: The endovascular surgical approach provides a minimally invasive treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms with less perioperative morbidity. This technique depends heavily on imaging to diagnose, plan surgical treatment, conduct the surgical procedure, and follow-up with patients. Image fusion technique was proposed to decrease radiation and injected contrast exposure; however, the accuracy of image fusion still needs to be improved. One of the major causes of this inaccuracy is the displacement of visceral arteries during respiration. Objective: To analyze the physiological respi…

A New Heartbeat-Respiration Coupling Metric for Relaxation/Stress Monitoring.

OBJECTIVE: Identification and continuous monitoring of relaxation/stress level through easily measurable physiological signals has become an urgent need. Relaxation/stress is mainly mediated by autonomic nervous system (ANS) which can hardly be noninvasively-measured, but can be reflected in heartbeat and respiration because the human body is a strongly coupling system. However, existing metrics based on heart rate and respiration present low accuracy for relaxation assessment. Our main objective is to propose a reliable metric for relaxation/stress monitoring. METHODS: By improving the quant…

Noncontact respiration monitoring techniques in young children: A scoping review.

Pediatric sleep-related breathing disorders, or sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), cover a range of conditions, including obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, sleep-related hypoventilation disorders, and sleep-related hypoxemia disorder. Pediatric SDB is often underdiagnosed, potentially due to difficulties associated with performing the gold standard polysomnography in children. This scoping review aims to: (1) provide an overview of the studies reporting on safe, noncontact monitoring of respiration in young children, (2) describe the accuracy of these techniques, and (3) highlight t…

Mitochondrial respiration in peripheral arterial disease depends on stage severity.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is an increasing cause of morbidity and its severity is graded based on clinical manifestation. To investigate the influence of the different stages on myopathy of ischemic muscle we analysed severity-dependent effects of mitochondrial respiration in PAD. Eighteen patients with severe PAD, defined as chronic limb-threatening ischemia, 47 patients with intermittent claudication (IC) and 22 non-ischemic controls were analysed. High-resolution respirometry (HRR) was performed on muscle biopsies of gastrocnemius and vastus lateralis muscle of patients in different…

Fumarate respiration of Fasciola flukes as a potential drug target.

Fascioliasis is a neglected tropical zoonotic disease caused by liver flukes belonging to the genus Fasciola. The emergence of resistance to triclabendazole, the only World Health Organization-recommended drug for this disease, highlights the need for the development of new drugs. Helminths possess an anaerobic mitochondrial respiratory chain (fumarate respiration) which is considered a potential drug target. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of fumarate respiration in Fasciola flukes. We analyzed the properties of the respiratory chain of Fasciola flukes in both adults and newly exc…

Frataxin deficiency disrupts mitochondrial respiration and pulmonary endothelial cell function.

Deficiency of iron‑sulfur (FeS) clusters promotes metabolic rewiring of the endothelium and the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH) i … eparate from previously described replication stress whereby FXN knockdown diminished mitochondrial respiration and increased glycolysis and oxidative species production. In turn, FXN-deficient endothelial cells had increased vasoconstrictor production (EDN1) and decreased nitric oxide synthase expression (NOS3). These data were observed in primary pulmonary …

Behavioral State-Dependent Modulation of Prefrontal Cortex Activity by Respiration.

Respiration-rhythmic oscillations in the local field potential emerge in the mPFC, a cortical region with a key role in the regulation of cognitive and emotional behavior. Respiration-driven rhythms coordinate local activity by entraining fast γ oscillations as well as single-unit discharges. To what extent respiration entrainment differently engages the mPFC network in a behavioral state-dependent manner, however, is not known. Here, we compared the respiration entrainment of mouse PFC local field potential and spiking activity (23 male and 2 female mice) across distinct behavioral states: du…

From Lung to Brain: Respiration Modulates Neural and Mental Activity.

Respiration protocols have been developed to manipulate mental states, including their use for therapeutic purposes. In this systematic review, we discuss evidence that respiration may play a fundamental role in coordinating neural activity, behavior, and emotion. The main findings are: (1) respiration affects the neural activity of a wide variety of regions in the brain; (2) respiration modulates different frequency ranges in the brain's dynamics; (3) different respiration protocols (spontaneous, hyperventilation, slow or resonance respiration) yield different neural and mental effects; and (…

KRAS-driven metabolic reprogramming is a known peculiarity features of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cells. However, the metabolic … feration. Our findings suggest that YY1 promotes PDAC cell proliferation by enhancing mitochondrial respiration and the TCA, which favors aspartate-associated nucleotide synthesis. Thus, targeting nucleotide biosynthesis is a promising strategy for PDAC treatment.

Mitochondrial respiration supports autophagy to provide stress resistance during quiescence.

Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) generates ATP, but OXPHOS also supports biosynthesis during proliferation. In contrast, the role of OXPHOS during quiescence, beyond ATP production, is not well understood. Using mouse models of inducible OXPHOS deficiency in all cell types or specifically in the vascular endothelium that negligibly relies on OXPHOS-derived ATP, we show that selectively during quiescence OXPHOS provides oxidative stress resistance by supporting macroautophagy/autophagy. Mechanistically, OXPHOS constitutively generates low levels of endogenous ROS that induce aut

A Wearable Bioimpedance Chest Patch for IoHT-Connected Respiration Monitoring.

This paper presents a wearable sensor patch with real-time respiration monitoring by measuring the change in thoracic impedance resulting from breathing. A bioimpedance (BioZ) sensor with two sensing electrodes is employed to measure the chest impedance. In addition, a medical-grade infrared temperature sensor is utilized to detect body temperature. The recorded data is transmitted via a Bluetooth module to a computer for online data computation and waveform visualization. The breath-by-breath breathing rate is calculated using the time difference between two BioZ signal peaks, and the results…

Hyperglycemia alters mitochondrial respiration efficiency and mitophagy in human podocytes.

Podocytes constitute the outer layer of the renal glomerular filtration barrier. Their energy requirements strongly depend on efficient oxidative respiration, which is tightly connected with mitochondrial dynamics. We hypothesized that hyperglycemia modulates energy metabolism in glomeruli and podocytes and contributes to the development of diabetic kidney disease. We found that oxygen consumption rates were severely reduced in glomeruli from diabetic rats and in human podocytes that were cultured in high glucose concentration (30 mM; HG). In these models, all of the mitochondrial respiratory …

Human larynx motor cortices coordinate respiration for vocal-motor control.

Vocal flexibility is a hallmark of the human species, most particularly the capacity to speak and sing. This ability is supported in part by the evolution of a direct neural pathway linking the motor cortex to the brainstem nucleus that controls the larynx the primary sound source for communication. Early brain imaging studies demonstrated that larynx motor cortex at the dorsal end of the orofacial division of motor cortex (dLMC) integrated laryngeal and respiratory control, thereby coordinating two major muscular systems that are necessary for vocalization. Neurosurgical studies have since de

Novel phrenic nerve stimulator treats Cheyne-Stokes respiration: polysomnographic insights.

A symptomatic patient with atrial fibrillation and Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR) was implanted with a transvenous phrenic nerve stimulation (TPNS) device-the remedē System-that is indicated for adult patients with moderate to severe central sleep apnea. Sleep recordings demonstrated that TPNS eliminated periodic breathing by activating the diaphragm and stabilizing respiratory patterns. These recordings of preprogrammed periods on versus off TPNS illustrate prompt (1) stabilization of tidal airflow, respiratory effort, and oxygenation as stimulation amplitude increased stepwise and (2) recur…

Sediment respiration contributes to phosphate release in lowland surface waters.

High phosphate (PO4) concentration peaks in lowland rivers occur due to internal loading at low flow rates and low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. However the mechanisms controlling this PO4 are not fully understood yet. This study was set up to identify additional factors affecting internal P loading, the hypothesis being that sediment respiration varies among sediments and might explain spatial variability in reducing conditions. The sediment of ten rivers was collected for a static sediment-water incubation experiment without aeration, to induce oxygen depletion by sediment respiratio…

A rate-based transcutaneous CO2 sensor for noninvasive respiration monitoring.

The pain and risk of infection associated with invasive blood sampling for blood gas measurements necessitate the search for reliable noninvasive techniques. In this work we developed a novel rate-based noninvasive method for a safe and fast assessment of respiratory status. A small sampler was built to collect the gases diffusing out of the skin. It was connected to a CO2 sensor through gas-impermeable tubing. During a measurement, the CO2 initially present in the sampler was first removed by purging it with nitrogen. The gases in the system were then recirculated between the sampler and the

Novel method for detection of Sleep Apnoea using respiration signals.

Polysomnography (PSG) studies are considered the "gold standard" for the diagnosis of Sleep Apnoea (SA). Identifying cessations of breathing from long-lasting PSG recordings manually is a labour-intensive and time-consuming task for sleep specialist, associated with inter-scorer variability. In this study a simplified, semi-automatic, three-channel method for detection of SA patients is proposed in order to increase analysis reliability and diagnostic accuracy in the clinic. The method is based on characteristic features, such as respiration stoppages pr. hour and the total number of oxygen de…

Neonatal outcome following cord clamping after onset of spontaneous respiration.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Evolving data indicate that cord clamping (CC) beyond 30 to 60 seconds after birth is of benefit for all infants. Recent experimental data demonstrated that ventilation before CC improved cardiovascular stability by increasing pulmonary blood flow. The objective was to describe the relationship between time to CC, onset of spontaneous respirations (SR), and 24-hour neonatal outcome. METHODS: In a rural Tanzanian hospital, trained research assistants, working in shifts, have observed every delivery (November 2009-February 2013) and recorded data including time interva…
