Behavioral and hormonal responses in the defensive repertoire during provocation in captive monocled cobra (Naja kaouthia).

The hooding behavior exhibited by cobras is a distinct defensive mechanism against predators, encompassing both visual and auditory displays. This behavior can be triggered by natural predators or humans. Considering that human provocation may potentially stimulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the present study aimed to determine the pattern of the HPA axis response following human provocation-induced hooding behavior (PV) and provide a detailed analysis of the behavioral PV displays. Our primary hypothesis was that a 5-minute PV could activate the HPA axis to a degree compar

Nerve injury alters restraint-induced activation of the basolateral amygdala in male rats.

The amygdala is critical for the production of appropriate responses towards emotional or stressful stimuli. It has a characteristic neuronal activation pattern to acute stressors. Chronic pain and acute stress have each been shown to independently modulate the activity of the amygdala. Few studies have investigated the effect of pain or injury, on amygdala activation to acute stress. This study investigated the effects of a neuropathic injury on the activation response of the amygdala to an acute restraint stress. Chronic constriction injury of the right sciatic nerve (CCI) was used to create

There is more to the mechanism of unconsciousness from vascular neck restraint than simply carotid compression.

Vascular neck restraint (VNR), an effective technique practiced within police and military combatives and in mixed martial arts and grappling sports, is of both interest and controversy. In any context the goal of VNR (referred to as a choke within combat sports) is to restrict brain blood flow enough to threaten or result in unconsciousness. The physiologic basis for the resultant unconsciousness has been depicted as being solely because of restriction of carotid blood flow due to direct external compression. This view is likely simpler than what is actually going on, but it's an area not wel

Restraint stress exacerbates cell degeneration induced by acute binge ethanol in the adolescent, but not in the adult or middle-aged, brain.

Restraint stress (RS) induces neurotoxicity in the hippocampus, yet most of the studies have employed protracted RS (i.e., ≈ 21 days). Binge ethanol can induce brain toxicity, an effect affected by age. It could be postulated that RS may facilitate ethanol-induced neurotoxicity, perhaps to a greater extent in adolescent vs. older subjects. We analyzed whether adolescent, adult or middle-aged male rats exposed to five episodes of RS followed, 72h later, by binge ethanol (i.e., two administrations of 2.5 g/kg ethanol) exhibited hippocampal neurotoxicity. Adolescents, but not adult or middle-aged

Pharmacologic activation of cholinergic alpha7 nicotinic receptors mitigates depressive-like behavior in a mouse model of chronic stress.

BACKGROUND: It has been shown that chronic stress-induced depression is associated with exaggerated inflammatory response in the brain. Alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChRs) regulate the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, but the role of cholinergic signaling and α7nAChR in chronic stress has not yet been examined. METHODS: In this study, we used a well-documented model of depression in which mice were exposed to 6 h of restraint stress for 21 consecutive days. Components of cholinergic signaling and TLR4 signaling were analyzed in the hippocampus. The main targets of neuroi

Pelvic and lower extremity immobilization for cloacal exstrophy bladder and abdominal closure in neonates and older children.

INTRODUCTION: Successful bladder closure in cloacal exstrophy (CE) is best accomplished through a multidisciplinary team and attention to pre- and postoperative technique. This study from a high volume exstrophy center investigates outcomes and complications of primary and reoperative bladder closures in patients immobilized with spica cast or patients with external fixation (EF) and skin traction. METHODS: The authors reviewed an institutionally approved and daily updated database of 1311 patients with exstrophy-epispadias complex and identified patients with cloacal exstrophy born between 1

Electrocardiogram, heart movement and heart rate in the awake gecko (Hemidactylus mabouia).

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is the simplest and most effective non-invasive method to assess the electrical activity of the heart and to obtain information on the heart rate (HR) and rhythm. Because information on the HR of very small reptiles (body mass <10 g) is still scarce in the literature, in the present work we describe a procedure for recording the ECG in non-anesthetized geckos (Hemidactylus mabouia, Moreau de Jonnès, 1818) under different conditions, namely manual restraint (MR), spontaneous tonic immobility (TI), and in the non-restrained condition (NR). In the gecko ECG, the P, QRS

External fixators as an adjunct to wound healing.

Complex foot and ankle wounds present multiple challenges for the reconstructive surgeon. Soft tissue deficits must be closed to protect underlying structures from infection and to provide a stable environment for healing. Surgical options commonly used include healing by secondary intention, local flap closure, skin grafts, pedicled flaps, and free tissue transfer. Despite a surgeon's best operative efforts, these strategies may fail because of postoperative shear forces created by premature joint motion or pressure (either weight bearing or decubitus). In the properly selected patient popula

The influence of head restraint and occupant factors on peak head/neck kinematics in low-speed rear-end collisions.

Prior two-way analyses of variance showed that the peak kinematic response of the head and neck of subjects exposed to low-speed rear-end collisions was related to speed change and gender, however potential reasons for this gender dependence were not determined. Using multiple linear regression, this study further examined these response data to determine the relative influence of specific factors, including subject anthropometry, neck strength, cervical range of motion, seated posture and head restraint position, which may have been responsible for the previously-observed gender dependence. [Effect of stress on the development of deafferentation pain syndrome in rats after sciatic nerve transection].

Effect of immobilization and painful stress on the development of deafferentation pain syndrome, appeared after sciatic nerve section, has been studied in Wistar rats. It has been determined that both immobilization and painful stress favour the appearance of pain syndrome in rats without clinical signs of pain syndrome up to the moment of stress influence. There has been made a conclusion that both immobilization and painful stress favour the appearance of pathologic algic system, which is the basis of pain syndrome. The fact that stress can cause analgesia in normal animals in contrast to th

The effects of short periods of immobilization on the hamster circadian clock.

Recent findings indicate that stimuli which induce an acute increase in locomotor activity can induce phase shifts in the circadian clock of hamsters. Support for the actual role of the acute increase in activity in the mediation of these phase shifts is provided by the observation that immobilization can totally block phase shifts in the activity rhythm that are normally induced in response to exposure to two of these stimuli, either a pulse of darkness or an injection of a benzodiazepine. In order to further examine the effects of immobilization on the circadian system of hamsters, 3 studies

[Reaction of the salivary glands to acute stress].

Experiment on male rats has shown that acute stress suppressed amylase and superoxide dismutase activity in the submandibular salivary glands. The influence of short repeated stresses weakened the inhibiting effect of the acute stress on the activity of enzymes. A conclusion is drawn about the high sensibility of salivary glands to stress influences.

Effect of myiasis and acute restraint stress on plasma levels of immunoreactive beta-endorphin, adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) and cortisol in the sheep.

Cutaneous myiasis in sheep arising from the activity of Lucilia cuprina larvae can result in significant physiological changes in susceptible animals. The stress imposed on the pituitary-adrenal axis of the sheep in response to myiasis and acute restraint is the subject of this investigation. Merino wethers were exposed to handling restraint, and blood sampling, during examination for blowfly strike; where necessary, they were treated for cutaneous myiasis. Significant changes in the plasma concentrations of immunoreactive beta-endorphin (beta-EP), ACTH and cortisol were found in sheep with ex

Changes in oculomotor function in relation to the vestibular-visual conflict sickness (pitch) in squirrel monkeys.

Based on the susceptibility of vestibular-visual conflict sickness in pitch, the oculomotor response was compared between 4 conflict sickness susceptible squirrel monkeys and 4 non-susceptibles. The time lag of nystagmic direction change in the nose-down position was longer in susceptibles than that in non-susceptibles. The irregularity of vertical eye nystagmus in susceptibles built up gradually during the exposure to conflict. After the emetic incidence, a sharp decline in the aforementioned time lag (in nose-down position) and improved regularity were found. These changes in oculomotor func

Effect of vitamin A depletion on stress-induced change in urinary output of catecholamines.

The effect of vitamin A depletion on stress-induced change in sympathoadrenal medullary activity was studied in rats. Four consecutive hours daily of immobilization provoked a marked increase in urinary excretion of free norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E), confirming previous findings. The stress caused a significant decrease in output of free dopamine (DA). In contrast, the vitamin A-depleted rats in the resting state excreted threefold more NE in urine as compared with the normal animals. The urinary NE response to the stress was markedly diminished in the depleted rats, although E and

Tibiotarsal arthrodesis in a Moufflon sheep.

Restraint of a mature Moufflon sheep resulted in severe fracture and luxation of a previously osteoarthritic tibiotarsal joint. Arthrodesis was accomplished by means of internal pin fixation and an external fiberglass cast. After 3 months of hospitalization, the ram was returned to the original flock. Competition for dominance within the flock resulted in physical trauma to the ram. Seven months after surgery, the ram sustained a fractured ulna and died from exposure.
