Retinal microvascular dysfunction in mild cognitive impairment: Associations with cerebral small vessel disease, plasma biomarkers, and cognitive decline.

INTRODUCTION: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transitional stage to dementia, with cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) as a key contributor. Since retinal microvascular changes may mirror cerebral pathology, we investigated the associations between retinal microvasculature, neuroimaging, and plasma biomarkers in individuals with MCI. METHODS: 61 MCI patients and 57 controls (CU) underwent retinal imaging, Neuroimaging (peak width of skeletonized diffusivity [PSMD], white matter hyperintensities [WMH]), plasma biomarker analysis, and cognitive assessment. Partial correlations and mediatio

Retinal hemodynamic and caliber biomarkers for the assessment of cerebral small vessel disease burden: insights from fundus fluorescein angiography.

BACKGROUND: Retinal microvasculature serves as a promising window to assess cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). However, the association between comprehensive fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) biomarkers and the total CSVD burden score remains to be fully elucidated. AIMES: To investigate the relationship between the total CSVD burden score and FFA-derived retinal biomarkers, and to identify independent retinal indicators for evaluating CSVD severity. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 120 patients. The CSVD burden score was evaluated based on lacunes of presumed vascular origin

Enhanced retinal blood vessel segmentation via loss balancing in dense generative adversarial networks with quick attention mechanisms.

PURPOSE: Manual segmentation of retinal blood vessels in fundus images has been widely used for detecting vascular occlusion, diabetic retinopathy, and other retinal conditions. However, existing automated methods face challenges in accurately segmenting fine vessels and optimizing loss functions effectively. This study aims to develop an integrated framework that enhances vessel segmentation accuracy and robustness for clinical applications. METHODS: The proposed pipeline integrates multiple advanced techniques to address the limitations of current approaches. In preprocessing, Quasi-Cross B

Retinal vessel analysis to assess microvascular function in the healthy eye: A systematic review on the response to acute physiological and pathological stressors.

The retina allows noninvasive in vivo assessment of the microcirculation. Autoregulation of the retinal microvasculature meets the changing requirements of local metabolic demand and maintains adequate blood flow. Analysis of the retinal vascular reactivity contributes to the understanding of regulatory physiology and its relationship to the systemic microcirculation. We conducted a literature review on the effect of different acute stimuli onto the retinal vasculature was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. A literature search between 1-1-2005 and 17-10-2022 was performed in M

Differences in collateral vessel formation after experimental retinal vein occlusion in spontaneously hypertensive rats and wild-type rats.

OBJECTIVE: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) can lead to visual impairment, but the development of collateral vessels can sometimes mitigate significant damage. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between collateral vessels and hypertension, the most common underlying condition associated with RVO, by comparing spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and wild-type Wister rats (WWRs). We also examined the differences between WWRs and SHRs in terms of sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor 1 (S1PR1) expression and its product nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS3) expression, which are involved in the

Towards Automated Eye Diagnosis: An Improved Retinal Vessel Segmentation Framework Using Ensemble Block Matching 3D Filter.

Automated detection of vision threatening eye disease based on high resolution retinal fundus images requires accurate segmentation of the blood vessels. In this regard, detection and segmentation of finer vessels, which are obscured by a considerable degree of noise and poor illumination, is particularly challenging. These noises include (systematic) additive noise and multiplicative (speckle) noise, which arise due to various practical limitations of the fundus imaging systems. To address this inherent issue, we present an efficient unsupervised vessel segmentation strategy as a step towards

Influence of cardiac hemodynamic variables on retinal vessel density measurement on optical coherence tomography angiography in patients with myocardial infarction.

INTRODUCTION: Quantitative measurements of retinal microvasculature by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) have been used to assess cardiovascular risk profile. However, to date, there are no studies focusing on OCT-A imaging in the setting of the altered hemodynamic status found in high-risk cardiovascular patients. METHODS: To determine the potential association between retinal vascular density on OCT-A and a comprehensive battery of hemodynamic variables in patients with myocardial infarction (MI) using data from the acute phase and at 3 months follow-up after cardiac rehabili

Decreasing intraocular pressure significantly improves retinal vessel density, cytoarchitecture and visual function in rodent oxygen induced retinopathy.

We attempted to explore a noninvasive, easily applicable and economically affordable therapy for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Rat pups were raised in 80% oxygen from postnatal day 7 to P12, and returned to room air. Travoprost eye drops were administered twice a day for 7 days, to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) by about 20%. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to visualize vessel endothelial cells, to analyze retinal neurons and cytoarchitecture. Behavioral experiments were carried out to test visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. At the end of the 7-day treatment, the number

Retinal Vessel Dysfunction in Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy With Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy: An Ultra-Widefield Fluorescein Angiography Study.

BACKGROUND: Restrictive measures were widely introduced at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce the spread of the virus. These restrictions have been linked to reductions in laboratory-diagnosed infections and hospitalisations. It is unclear if the observed decreases reflect a reduction in health-seeking behaviour or results from fewer infections per se. METHODS: We have explored trends in caregiver reports of respiratory infections and symptoms needing a doctor visit in children aged 0-11 years using data from the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study in 2011-2021, comparing the prepandem

Retinal Vascular Morphology Reflects and Predicts Cerebral Small Vessel Disease: Evidences from Eye-Brain Imaging Analysis.

Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) involves ischemic white matter damage and choroid plexus (CP) dysfunction for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production. Given the vascular and CSF links between the eye and brain, this study explored whether retinal vascular morphology can indicate cerebrovascular injury and CP dysfunction in SVD. We assessed SVD burden using imaging phenotypes like white matter hyperintensities (WMH), perivascular spaces, lacunes, and microbleeds. Cerebrovascular injury was quantified by WMH volume and peak width of skeletonized mean diffusivity (PSMD), while CP volume measured

Machine learning-based migraine analysis using retinal vessel diameters from optical coherence tomography: an alternative approach.

OBJECTIVE: Migraine is a primary headache disorder characterised by attacks of headache that are usually unilateral and throbbing in nature, may be accompanied by neurological symptoms, and, due to its complex pathophysiology, can affect not only the central nervous system but also structures such as the retinal vascular system. In recent years, retinal imaging techniques have emerged as a promising method for studying neuro-ophthalmological diseases. In this study, we aimed to predict migraine by evaluating the measurements made from retinal images obtained with Optical Coherence Tomography (
