Effect of vernal keratoconjunctivitis on vitreous depth in patients with keratoconus.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the vitreous depth (VD) of keratoconic eyes in patients with or without vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty eyes of 80 consecutive keratoconus (KC) patients and 40 emmetropic control subjects were enrolled. KC patients were divided into two groups according to accompanying VKC (VKC-KC group and KC group). Mean outcome measures were best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spherical equivalent (SE), mean keratometry (Km), intraocular pressure (IOP), and axial length (AL) and its components. The eyes with the h

Bilateral pediatric cataract surgery: outcomes of 390 children from Nepal and Northern India.

PURPOSE: To report the outcomes of bilateral pediatric cataract surgery from eastern Nepal and northern India. METHODS: Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data of 390 children who underwent surgery bilaterally between 2007 and 2009 were analyzed. RESULTS: Forty-two (10.8%) children came from Nepal and 348 (89.2%) from India (mainly Bihar State). Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation with posterior capsule opening and anterior vitrectomy were achieved in 386 (99.0%) children bilaterally. Median age at surgery was 7 years and 69.2% were male. At first presentation, 243 (62.3%) of th

In vivo analysis of glued intraocular lens position with ultrasound biomicroscopy.

PURPOSE: To report ultrasound biomicroscopic (UBM) findings of glued transscleral-fixated posterior chamber intraocular lenses (IOLs) in eyes with inadequate capsules. SETTING: Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital and Eye Research Centre, Chennai, India. DESIGN: Case series. METHODS: Eyes with glued IOLs for inadequate capsule support were examined with UBM. Optic tilt was measured in relation to the iris plane. Haptic location, iris-IOL contact, vitreous incarceration, and central anterior chamber depth (ACD) were measured and correlated clinically with vision and refractive error. RESULTS: The mea

[What vision loss might bring to light].

We report a case of a 36-year old patient who suffered from a unilateral painless loss of vision. Ophthalmological examination in the context of a highly reactive syphilis serology revealed an acute syphilitic posterior placoide chorioretinitis (ASPPC). Additional clinical findings were a mucosal lesion on the upper lip, consistent with a plaque opaline and an alopecia specifica as manifestation of secondary syphilis. Treatment consisted in 6 x 4 Mio. IE* Penicillin G for 14 days and 50 mg Prednisone for five days to prevent a Jarisch Herxheimer reaction. The diagnostic measures, therapy and f

Ocular axial length and corneal refraction in children with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS I-Hurler).

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To assess corneal refraction and axial length in children with mucopolysaccharidosis I-Hurler (MPS I-H), treated early with stem cell transplantation (SCT), in order to establish possible causes of hyperopia. METHODS: Clinical ophthalmological follow-up included keratometry and measurements of axial length. RESULTS: Five patients, with SCT performed before 23 months of age, were examined. Median age was 8.2 years (range 5.2-10.5). Best-corrected decimal visual acuity was ≥ 0.5 (≥ 20/40 Snellen fraction) in seven of 10 eyes. High hyperopia, ranging from +4.0 to +9.0 spherical

Refractive Errors and Amblyopia in the UCLA Preschool Vision Program; First Year Results.

PURPOSE: To report the outcomes of full ophthalmic examination for preschool children in LA County who failed screening with the Retinomax Autorefractor. DESIGN: Retrospective, cross-sectional study. METHODS: Between August 2012 and May 2013, the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) preschool vision program screened 11 260 preschool children aged 3-5 years in Los Angeles County using the Retinomax Autorefractor only. Of those, 1007 children who failed the screening were examined by an ophthalmologist on the UCLA Mobile Eye Clinic. Data from the eye examination were recorded for all ch

Bilateral macular folds as a diagnostic clue to late-presenting posterior microphthalmos.

Posterior microphthalmos with macular folds is a very uncommon condition. We report such an unusual late-presenting case of posterior microphthalmos where macular folds uncovered the diagnosis and discuss the possibility of worsening of macular folds with advancing age.

The horizontal dark oculomotor rest position.

BACKGROUND: This study sought to investigate whether eye dominance and age are related to the stimulus-free oculomotor resting state described via the dark disconjugate position (near or far), the dark conjugate position (left to right), and the near dissociated phoria. METHODS: Nineteen non-presbyopes and 25 presbyopes with normal binocular vision participated in two identical sessions. The left-eye and the right-eye positions were recorded using a video-based infrared eye tracker while the subjects were in total darkness. Dark disconjugate responses and dark conjugate responses were calcula

Anisometropia in Hispanic and african american infants and young children the multi-ethnic pediatric eye disease study.

PURPOSE: To determine anisometropia prevalence and associated risk factors in Hispanic and African American preschoolers. DESIGN: Population-based, cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: We included 3030 Hispanic and 2994 African American children aged 6 to 72 months from Inglewood, California. Quality of life and long-time follow-up of patients with optic nerve hypoplasia.

PURPOSE: To assess long-term outcome of visual function, comorbidities, and quality of life in patients with optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical data of ONH patients. The study cohort comprised a subset of patients who had participated in a 2009-2012 population-based study of ONH patients, supplemented by a smaller group of patients who were examined subsequently. Patients who participated in follow-up examination from 2018 to 2021 were included. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), retinoscopy, visual fields, and ocular characteristics were examined…
