Multidimensional analysis of the impact of adenoid hypertrophy on pediatric dentofacial and airway structures and construction of a diagnostic model.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to systematically analyze the impact of adenoid hypertrophy on dental, maxillofacial and airway structures and cl … tly higher in the pathological group. This suggests that adenoid hypertrophy may lead to mandibular retrognathia, which in turn may exacerbate Angle Class II malocclusion.2.Three-dimensional airway analysis revealed that the nasopharyngeal volume in the pathological group was 50% less than that in the control group (4,971 ± 1,803 mm3, p < 0.001), confirming it …

One-stage technique for sagittal split ramus osteotomy combined with mandibular angle ostectomy.

Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) is commonly used to correct mandibular prognathism or retrognathism. Patients with mandibular prognathism or retrognathism may also present with a prominent mandibular angle. In this paper, we share our experience on BSSRO with mandibular angle resection. Eleven patients who were treated from July 2014 to December 2016 were included in this study. The mandibular angle was resected through the medial side of the mandible after BSSRO. The mandibular angle measurements of the patients changed significantly after surgery (p < 0.05). Unanticipated fr

Maxillary protraction to treat pediatric obstructive sleep apnea and maxillary retrusion: a preliminary report.

INTRODUCTION: Midface retrusion creates a size deficiency problem in the upper airway that has been improved in children using surgical midface advancement and orthopedic protraction of the maxilla. The results of these treatments have been mostly promising at enlarging the pharyngeal airway. Recently introduced bone anchored maxillary protraction (BAMP) uses implant inserted devices in the jaws to pull the maxilla forward against a backward pressure to the lower jaw. This is a pilot study that examines the use of BAMP as a strategy to treat maxillary retrusion, malocclusion and children with

Changes in airway dimensions following functional appliances in growing patients with skeletal class II malocclusion: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the treatment effects of functional appliances (FAs) on upper airway dimensions in growing Class II patients with mandibular retrognathism. METHODS: Five databases and the references of identified articles were electronically searched for relevant studies that met our eligibility criteria. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The effects of FAs on airway dimensions were combined by meta-analysis using the RevMan and STATA software. RESULTS: Seven studies (177 treated patients with mean age: 11.

Cephalometric analysis of hard and soft tissues in a 12-year-old syndromic child: a case report and update on dentofacial features of Crouzon syndrome.

Crouzon syndrome or craniofacial dysostosis is a rare syndrome characterized by craniosynostosis, midfacial hypoplasia and exophthalmia. The abnormalities found in this syndrome change too much from case to case depending on the suture fusion order. We report a case of a 12 year old child and a mother showing variations in the dentofacial tissues clinically and radiographically. Subsequently, the application of digital software [Dolphin Imaging 11] enabled us to solve out the case as Crouzon syndrome by analyzing the skeletal and soft tissue alterations. An update of the effects of this syndro

TMD warning sign: cephalometrics.

The significance of predisposing factors to TMD is quite evident when considering the prevalence of orthodontic relapse and with the occurrence of TMD related symptoms observed in previously treated orthodontic patients. In using the Modified Sassouni Plus Cephalometric Analysis, the clinician now possesses an invaluable tool that is readily available without adding to the examination expense. The invaluable information gained from cephalometric evaluation should not, however, be used to replace other diagnostic TMJ radiographs. If a joint problem is suspected, one should follow the normal pro

A lateral photometric analysis for aesthetic-orthognathic treatment.

A new lateral photometric analysis, used as a new diagnostic aid in surgical orthognathic treatment and aesthetic surgery, is described. The normal facial features of one male and one female were analysed and then assessed to provide examples of the "normal". Seven cases with aesthetic-orthognathic problems were also analysed and diagnosed according to this newly-described technique and these represented examples of the "abnormal". The benefits of using this diagnostic aid are obvious to the maxillo-facial/aesthetic surgeon or orthodontist. He should be able to plan his treatment beyond the li

Velopharyngeal anatomy and maxillary advancement.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the radiographic changes in the static velopharyngeal mechanism following total maxillary advancement. Records of 21 patients treated for maxillary retrusion were evaluated. Two groups were present: 13 non-cleft patients and 8 cleft-lip patients. The findings demonstrate an anatomical change in the velopharyngeal mechanism following total maxillary advancement. A similar change occurred in both groups; however, the magnitude is differed. The angle of the soft palate to hard palate increased with surgery (2 degrees per mm. advancement noncleft and 1 degree

Postoperative maxillary stability after Le Fort I osteotomy using a u-HA/PLLA system: three-dimensional analysis by surface superimposition based on virtual Le Fort I osteotomy.

The postoperative stability achieved with Le Fort I osteotomy (LFI) using bioabsorbable systems remains controversial. A new method - multipoint measurement method - was devised for detailed three-dimensional examination of postoperative stability following LFI, and the stability after LFI when using SuperFIXSORB-MX made of u-HA/PLLA was investigated. Thirty-one patients who underwent LFI using SuperFIXSORB-MX were evaluated retrospectively. The patients were divided into four malocclusion types: open bite, mandibular retrognathia, mandibular protrusion, and facial asymmetry. Seven maxillary r…

Heterozygous mutations in ERF cause syndromic craniosynostosis with multiple suture involvement.

Craniosynostosis is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous condition. Knowledge of the specific genetic diagnosis in patients presenting … I malformation. Dysmorphic features included hypertelorism, proptosis, depressed nasal bridge, and retrognathia, in keeping with previously reported cases. The individuals did not require repeated cranial surgeries. ERF-related craniosynostosis should be suspected in patients presenting with multiple suture or sagittal synostosis.
