This paper is a summary of our observations on 105 cases of infantile spasms. The age of onset was around six months after birth, but the patients came for treatment mainly about one year after onset. Fever of unknown cause, asphyxia, birth injury, infection of the central nervous system, tuberous sclerosis, phenylketonuria and recent immunization etc. were possible etiology. Clinically, it is characterized by head nodding, mental retardation, myoclonic jerks and various neurologic deficits. A retrospective study was made of 314 consecutive cases of traumatic hyphaema in a mixed urban and rural Scottish population. Secondary haemorrhage occurred in 4.1% of cases and was not associated with a worsening of final visual acuity. There were no identifiable risk factors for secondary haemorrhage. Poor visual outcome was in most cases attributable to retinal pathology. The use of antifibrinolytic agents does not appear to be necessary in such a population, and the importance of detecting associated retinal detachment is emphasised.

A review of 52 patients with celiac disease showed the development of malignant tumors in eight cases (15%). The following malignomas were diagnosed: one malignant lymphoma, one multiple myeloma, one rhabdomyosarcoma, one carcinoma of the uterus, one carcinoma of the sigmoid colon and three adenocarcinomas of the small bowel. Few published reports exist describing morbidity and mortality in domestic zebra finch colonies maintained in a laboratory animal setting. A retrospective study of clinical disease and mortality in quarantined adult zebra finches was performed. One hundred twenty-one patients with acute epididymitis or epididymo-orchitis were evaluated retrospectively according to their clinical symptoms, duration of symptoms, physical examination, and laboratory studies. Present data on the harmful fetal effects of maternal alcohol use have seriously questioned the safety of ethanol treatment, as once prescribed for arresting premature uterine contractions. 71 patients with juvenile spondarthritis were studied retrospectively. Age at onset of disease varied between 4 and 16 years. 94% of patients were HLA-B27 positive. Relatives with symptoms of spondarthritis were found in the families of 23 children. All patients developed radiographic sacroiliitis. Prominent disease symptom was a peripheral arthritis, which was mostly pauciarticular and asymmetric, involving big joints of the lower limbs. 41 patients suffered from heel pains, 33 complained of back or sacroiliac pains. An acute iridocyclitis with one or several relapses was seen in 10 patients.

In a retrospective study the outcome of non-gonococcal infectious arthritis was evaluated in 76 adult patients admitted to the Leiden University Hospital between 1970 and 1984. The mortality rate was 12%, and complete recovery was achieved in only 19 of the 76 patients (25%). Each of the following had a significantly unfavourable influence on the residual joint function: duration of infection more than 14 days, female sex, presence of rheumatoid arthritis, and presence of a joint prosthesis.
