A single blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study was performed during a pollen season in 41 patients suffering from seasonal allergic rhinitis. A group of 26 patients was treated with loratadine (10 mg daily in one dose) for 3 weeks. Placebo was given in the group of 15 patients (1 tablet daily) during 8-10 days. We prospectively studied 47 consecutive patients with either seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis or nonallergic rhinitis in a general allergy clinic. A diagnostic questionnaire was administered for symptoms of rhinitis and fibromyalgia, and patients were examined for tender points. A history of congestion was present in 91%, rhinorrhea in 87%, and postnasal drip in 83%. This study was conducted to determine the frequency of sensitization to Aspergillus antigens in 27 patients with perennial rhinitis. Immediate cutaneous reactivity was observed in 7 (26%) patients. In 3 of these 7 patients, hypersensitivity was restricted to Aspergillus antigens alone. One patient had an isolated late cutaneous reaction. Hypersensitivity was observed most commonly with A. flavus. Serum precipitins to A. flavus were detected in one patient. Histamine and heparin, both free and cellular, were assayed in the nasal mucosa of 11 atopic and 15 nonatopic patients undergoing turbinectomy for chronic rhinitis. There was no significant difference between the free and cellular histamine levels of the atopic and nonatopic patients. Our study comprised 50 patients of allergic and vasomotor rhinitis. Seventeen patients gave history of stress and strain hence they were given Geriforte in addition to Septilin. The results of therapy were judged on following criteria: i) Symptomatic improvement. ii) Appearance of nasal mucosa before and after the therapy. Thirty-nine patients (78%) were cured 100% as they had total relief from symptoms along with change of nasal mucosa from bluish to pink. Rhinorrhea is due to increased parasympathetic activity. This study was undertaken in order to study the applicability and efficacy of ipratropium, an anticholinergic drug, in patients with perennial rhinitis seen in an allergy clinic. Thirteen patients were included in the double-blind, cross-over study following screening with methacholine test. Ipratropium administered in the form of a nasal spray was compared with placebo in 30 patients with vasomotor rhinitis in a double-blind cross-over trial. There was a significant reduction in nasal hypersecretion during ipratropium treatment, but no effect on nasal blockage, sneezing or tickling. Total and specific IgE in serum and nasal secretions were measured in twenty five subjects with vasomotor rhinitis without asthma (21 perennial vasomotor allergic rhinitis and 4 seasonal vasomotor allergic rhinitis) after Carbacholine nasal challenge-test. The level of total and specific IgE was lower in the pure, non diluted nasal secretions than in the serum. The diagnostic usefullness of these measurements and the concept of "localized allergy" are discussed.

Beclomethasone dipropionate has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of seasonal and perennial rhinitis. Comparative studies with other medications are lacking. Adverse reactions are frequent but minor. No alterations of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, nasal mucosal histology or bacterial and fungal flora have been recognized.
