PURPOSE: To report the ocular manifestations of acute serologically confirmed murine typhus.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the clini … y confirmed that both patients had been exposed to fleas and the serologic testing was positive for Rickettsia typhi. The systemic and ocular findings resolved after the use of systemic antibiotics.
CONCLUSION: Rickettsial diseases such as murine typhus should be included in the differential diagnosis of otherwise healthy individuals who present with an acute sys …

Studies were made on the isolation and identification of the Rickettsia typhi toxin-neutralizing factor (TNF) previously demonstrated in normal human serum. By means of various methods of separating serum proteins, such as filtration on Sephadex G-200, dextran precipitation, hydroxyapatite chromatography, and ultracentrifugation, TNF was found to be closely associated with purified serum beta-lipoprotein, although no serological relationship with this protein was demonstrated. Lipase as well as trypsin digestion of purified preparations of beta-lipoprotein destroyed the TN activity. No evidenc…

Members of the genus Bartonella have historically been connected with human disease, such as cat scratch disease, trench fever, and Carrion' … rum against other Bartonella spp. Antibodies against Coxiella burnetti, Francisella tularensis, and Rickettsia typhi also reacted with our recombinant Bartonella SucB. Potential SucB antigenic cross-reactivity presents a challenge to the development of serodiagnostic tests for other intracellular pathogens that cause diseases such as Q fever, rickettsioses, brucel …

In the past century vaccine development for prevention of rickettsial diseases has been prolific. However, in the past 20 years no new rickettsial vaccine has been manufactured and there are currently no new or old rickettsial vaccines licensed. Early rickettsial vaccines were difficult, expensive and very hazardous to produce. Molecular biology techniques of today are currently being used to develop new rickettsial vaccines that are standardized, inexpensive, nonhazardous and efficacious.

The incidence of rickettsioses in Togo was examined by means of the microagglutination-technique according to Giroud. Out of 559 sera obtained from different parts of the country the following percentages of positive reactions were found: R. prowazeki 0.2%, R. mooseri: 4.7%, R. conori: 0.4%, R. burneti: 2.0%. It was proved that 1) R. mooseri-infections were more prevalent in adults than in children and adolescents and 2) R. mooseri-infections were found more frequently in the southern regions of the country, whereas R. burneti-infections were more widely distributed in the north of Togo.

Murine typhus is an endemic infectious disease caused by Rickettsia typhi and is transmitted by fleas. It typically causes a mild illness with symptoms of fever, rash, headache, chills, and non-specific gastrointestinal complaints. However, there have been no reported cases in the literature of murine typhus infection causing symptoms of acute psychosis and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). A 30-year-old female with a history of gastric bypass and chronic pain syndrome presented to the emergency department with altered mental state and fever. She developed vivid visual hallucinatio…

PURPOSE AND METHODS: The rickettsioses continue to constitute major health problems in many parts of the world. With increasing international travel, recognition of rickettsial diseases by physicians is becoming more important. The clinical features of four cases of rickettsial disease imported into Canada over a five-year period are presented; two patients with tick typhus (Rickettsia conorii), one patient with scrub typhus (R. tsutsugamushi), and one patient with murine typhus (R. typhi). We also present the North American data over the past 10 years from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC

The tetracyclines are active in vitro against many urinary tract pathogens such as Chlamydia, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Brucella, rickettsiae, and Nocardia. Chloramphenicol is used primarily for anaerobic infections, Haemophilus influenzae meningitis, and infections due to Salmonella typhi. Erythromycin is active in vitro against M. pneumoniae, Legionella spp., Streptococcus pneumoniae, and group A beta-hemolytic streptococci; it may also be used as prophylactic therapy for subacute bacterial endocarditis and for recurrence of acute rheumatic fever in patients who are allergic to penicillin. The order Rickettsiales includes species that cause a range of human diseases such as human granulocytic anaplasmosis (Anaplasma phagocytophilum), human monocytic ehrlichiosis (Ehrlichia chaffeensis), scrub typhus (Orientia tsutsugamushi), epidemic typhus (Rickettsia prowazekii), murine typhus (R. typhi), Mediterranean spotted fever (R. conorii), or Rocky Mountain spotted fever (R. rickettsii). These diseases are gaining a new momentum given their resurgence patterns and geographical expansion due to the overall rise in temperature and other human-induced pressure, thereby remaining a major pu

We conducted a prospective, inpatient fever study in malaria-endemic Papua, Indonesia to determine non-malaria fever etiologies. Investigations included malaria blood films, blood culture, paired serologic samples analysis for dengue, Japanese encephalitis, leptospirosis, scrub typhus, murine typhus, and spotted fever group rickettsia. During 1997-2000, 226 patients (127 males and 99 females) 1-80 years of age (median age = 25 years) were enrolled. Positive blood cultures (n = 34, 15%) were obtained for Salmonella Typhi (n = 13), Escherichia coli (n = 8), Streptococcus pneumoniae (n = 6), Stap

Murine typhus is a flea-borne disease caused by Rickettsia typhi infection. The disease is a notifiable infectious disease in Taiwan. Specimens from suspected cases are required to be sent to the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for laboratory diagnosis. In this study, 204 cases of murine typhus were identified by bacterial isolation, real-time polymerase chain reaction, or indirect immunofluorescence assay between 2013 and 2020. The average incidence rate was 0.11/100,000 person-years (95% CI: 0.08-0.13). Murine typhus occurred throughout the year, but it was most prevalent i…

Murine typhus is widely reported in tropical and subtropical areas, especially coastal and port cities. We describe an interesting case of murine typhus in a 26-year-old woman at 26 weeks of gestation treated with ampicillin with a good response. The serology testing for murine typhus was reported after ampicillin was empirically started, and the patient's symptoms were already resolving. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of murine typhus during pregnancy reported in the United States.

In a trial to determine the role of Sinai rodents as reservoirs to rickettsial diseases, the IFA technique was used to detect the presence of R. typhi and spotted fever group in blood of some commensal and wild rodent species collected in Sinai during the last five years (1985-1989). Out of 277 Rattus spp. collected in El Arish (47.3%) were positive to R. typhi and only (5.9%) of 35 Mus musculus were positive to R. typhi. As for Gerbillus spp. only (1.5%) of 206 animals were positive for R. typhi. The positive cases of spotted fever group were (34.6%) in Rattus spp. and (18.8%) in Gerbillus sp
