Risk of Viral Infectious Diseases from Live Bats, Primates, Rodents and Carnivores for Sale in Indonesian Wildlife Markets.

Southeast Asia is considered a global hotspot of emerging zoonotic diseases. There, wildlife is commonly traded under poor sanitary conditions in open markets; these markets have been considered 'the perfect storm' for zoonotic disease transmission. We assessed the potential of wildlife trade in spreading viral diseases by quantifying the number of wild animals of four mammalian orders (Rodentia, Chiroptera, Carnivora and Primates) on sale in 14 Indonesian wildlife markets and identifying zoonotic viruses potentially hosted by these animals. We constructed a network analysis to visualize the a…

Small mammals from the Caatinga: A dataset for the Brazilian semiarid biome.

The Caatinga is an exclusively Brazilian biome, and is the largest and most biodiverse Seasonal Tropical Dry Forest in the world. Despite that, the mammalian fauna, especially small mammals, is the least studied of all Brazilian biomes. In order to fill gaps and provide detailed information on small mammals (Didelphimorphia, Rodentia) in the Caatinga biome, we compiled reliable records focusing on richness, composition and some biometric data. These records came from mammal collections, papers, theses, books, and unpublished data, prioritizing records with vouchers housed in scientific collect…

Structural Organization of the Penis in the South American Plains Vizcacha (Lagostomus maximus), a Caviomorph Rodent.

The male genital morphology of the plains vizcacha (Lagostomus maximus) remains poorly characterized despite the species' distinctive reproductive biology and its phylogenetic position within Caviomorpha. In this study, we describe the gross anatomy, histology, and ultrastructure of the penis of L. maximus using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The genitalia of the vizcacha shares several features with other caviomorph rodents, including the absence of a pendulous scrotum, subcutaneous inguinal testes, and a retracted inverted S-shaped penile configuration. Notably, we identi

Mites present in small terrestrial mammals in a preserved unit inside the Atlantic rainforest including pathogen monitoring.

Ectoparasitic mites have been studied for many years in the medical and veterinary fields, particularly for their association with humans and domesticated animals. At environments with little anthropic actions is possible to learn more about their interaction with natural or primary hosts. In this study, ectoparasitic mites of rodents and mammals of the Legado das Águas reserve were studied. The reserve is located inside the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest with high levels of conservation due to being mainly used for ecotourism. The objective of this study was to explore ectoparasitic mites in t

Selenophobia (moonlight avoidance) in nocturnal rodents: A primer.

Photophobia, aversion for brightly lit environments, is commonly observed in laboratory nocturnal rodents such as mice and rats, as indicated, for example, by the light-dark box test. The universality of photophobia in laboratory nocturnal rodents rises questions on its corresponding behavior in nature and on what adaptive value may have led to the selection of this behavior during biological evolution. Nocturnality alone is insufficient to explain photophobic behavior, as nocturnal rodents show reduced roaming in the day just because they are sleeping and not because they are choosing to avoi

Suspected anticoagulant rodenticide toxicosis in captive nutria (Myocastor coypus) in Thailand.

Nutria (Myocastor coypus) is a large, herbivorous rodent found in Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia. Anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) toxicosis was diagnosed in captive nutrias based on anamnesis, clinical signs and chemical analysis, marking suspected case in this species in Thailand. Six out of the eight nutrias in the same herd died, showing initial clinical signs such as abnormal bleeding and abortion in pregnant individuals. A carcass of the dead nutria was analysed for exposure to rodenticides. Screening tests on liver specimens, using thin-layer chromatography and spectrophotometry,

Identification of Distinct Rodent-Associated Adenovirus Lineages from Mixed-Use Landscape.

Land-use change and increased human-livestock-wildlife interactions have generated numerous possibilities for viral spillover, demanding enhanced surveillance in biodiverse regions. We investigated adenovirus diversity in small mammals, an understudied host taxon, from a forest-plantation mosaic in the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. We observed high prevalence (up to 39.39%) and identified five lineages of adenoviruses with unique mutations in the dominant small mammal species, Rattus satarae. These lineages significantly differed from other known murine adenoviruses (p-distance > 25%), i

Brucella microti and Rodent-Borne Brucellosis: A Neglected Public Health Threat.

Brucellosis is one of the most important zoonoses worldwide, primarily affecting livestock but also posing a serious threat to public health. The major Brucella species are known to cause a feverish disease in humans with various clinical signs. These classical Brucella species are (re-)emerging, but also novel strains and species, some of them transmitted from rodents, can be associated with human infections. As a result of our review on rodent-borne brucellosis, we emphasise the need for more comprehensive surveillance of Brucella and especially Brucella microti in rodent populations and cal

Species Composition of a Small Mammal Community and Prevalence of Echinococcus spp. in the Alpine Pastoral Area of the Eastern Tibetan Plateau.

We aimed to investigate the species composition of a small mammal community and the prevalence of Echinococcus spp. in a typical endemic area of the Tibetan Plateau. One pika and five rodent species were identified based on the morphological characteristics of 1278 small mammal specimens collected during 2014-2019. Detection of Echinococcus DNA in tissue samples from small mammal specimens revealed that Ochotona curzoniae (pika, total prevalence: 6.02%, 26/432), Neodon fuscus (5.91%, 38/643), N. leucurus (2.50%, 3/120), and Alexandromys limnophilus (21.74%, 10/46) were infected by both E. mult

Long-read genome assembly and gene model annotations for the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium yoelii 17XNL.

Malaria causes >600 thousand fatalities each year, with most cases attributed to the human-infectious Plasmodium falciparum species. Many rodent-infectious Plasmodium species, like Plasmodium berghei and Plasmodium yoelii, have been used as model species that can expedite studies of this pathogen. P. yoelii is an especially good model for investigating the mosquito and liver stages of development because key attributes closely resemble those of P. falciparum. Because of its importance, in 2002 the 17XNL strain of P. yoelii was the first rodent malaria parasite to be sequenced. Although this wa

Gene delivery followed by ex vivo lung perfusion using an adeno-associated viral vector in a rodent lung transplant model.

OBJECTIVE: Ex vivo lung perfusion has emerged as a platform for organ preservation, evaluation, and restoration. Gene delivery using a clinically relevant adeno-associated vector during ex vivo lung perfusion may be useful in optimizing donor allografts while the graft is maintained physiologically active. We evaluated the feasibility of adeno-associated vector-mediated gene delivery during ex vivo lung perfusion in a rat transplant model. Additionally, we assessed off-target effects and explored different routes of delivery. METHODS: Rat heart-lung blocks were procured and underwent 1-hour e

Stress in adolescence as a first hit in stress-related disease development: Timing and context are crucial.

The two-hit stress model predicts that exposure to stress at two different time-points in life may increase or decrease the risk of developing stress-related disorders later in life. Most studies based on the two-hit stress model have investigated early postnatal stress as the first hit with adult stress as the second hit. Adolescence, however, represents another highly sensitive developmental window during which exposure to stressful events may affect programming outcomes following exposure to stress in adulthood. Here, we discuss the programming effects of different types of stressors (socia

Cell-Free DNA as a Biomarker in a Rodent Model of Chlorpyrifos Poisoning Causing Mitochondrial Dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Organophosphates (OPs) are a major public health problem worldwide due to ease of access and high toxicity lacking effective biomarkers and treatment. Cholinergic agents such as OPs and carbamates are responsible for many pesticide-related deaths. While the inhibition of AChE is thought to be the main mechanism of injury, there are other important pathways that contribute to the overall toxicity of OPs such as mitochondrial dysfunction. An existing gap in OP poisoning are biomarkers to gauge severity and prognosis. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) are novel biomarkers that have gained incre

Basic physiological effects of ketamine-xylazine mixture as a general anesthetic preparation for rodent surgeries.

Among the numerous general anesthetics utilized in rodent surgical procedures, the co-administration of ketamine and xylazine is the current standard for induction and maintenance of surgical planes of anesthesia and pain control. In contrast to classical GABAergic anesthetics, which act to inhibit CNS activity, inducing muscle relaxation, sedation, hypothermia, and brain hypoxia, ketamine and xylazine act through different mechanisms to induce similar effects while also providing potent analgesia. By using three-point thermorecording in freely moving rats, we show that the ketamine-xylazine m

Novel Rodent Arterivirus Detected in the Brazilian Amazon.

As part of a continuous effort to investigate the viral communities associated with wild mammals at the human-animal interface in an Amazonian metropolitan region, this study describes the detection of a novel rodent-borne arterivirus. A sample containing pooled organs of Oecomys paricola was submitted to RNA sequencing, and four sequences taxonomically assigned as related to the Arteriviridae family were recovered, corresponding to an almost complete genome of nearly 13 kb summed. In the phylogenetic analysis with the standard domains used for taxa demarcation in the family, the tentatively n

Living with chronic infection: Persistent immunomodulation during avirulent haemoparasitic infection in a wild rodent.

Apicomplexans are a protozoan phylum of obligate parasites which may be highly virulent during acute infections, but may also persist as chronic infections which appear to have little fitness cost. Babesia microti is an apicomplexan haemoparasite that, in immunocompromised individuals, can cause severe, potentially fatal disease. However, in its natural host, wild field voles (Microtus agrestis), it exhibits chronic infections that have no detectable impact on survival or female fecundity. How is damage minimized, and what is the impact on the host's immune state and health? We examine the dif
