Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction and Psychological Distress Affect Dietary Behavior: Italian Data From the Worldwide Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) are highly prevalent and frequently associated with psychological distress and meal-related symptoms. While the habitual Italian diet is Mediterranean and nutritionally protective, its high content of fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) may exacerbate gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort in susceptible individuals. The extent to which DGBI and psychological distress are associated with real-world dietary behavior remains unclear. METHODS: Data from the Italian arm of the Rome Foundation Global Epi…

Integrative lipidomic and transcriptomic analysis unraveled polystyrene nanoplastics-induced liver injury via oral and inhalation exposure: All roads lead to Rome?

The ubiquitous environmental presence of nanoplastics (NPs) necessitates urgent investigation into their biological impacts. As the primary target organ for accumulated NPs, the liver faces substantial health risks, but the differential hepatotoxic effects of different exposure routes remain unknown. In this study, a four-week exposure experiment in mice using polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) through oral and inhalation routes were conducted. Multidimensional assessments revealed exposure route-specific pathological patterns: oral administration primarily caused histopathological damage, wher

Nickel dermatitis from earrings 15 years after EU directive implementation: a clinical-epidemiological study and a market survey in Rome, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Nickel (Ni) dermatitis remains a highly prevalent allergic condition in Italy. There is a continuous need for clinical and epide … earring parts. CONCLUSIONS: A high prevalence of Ni dermatitis and earlobe symptoms were found in Rome. A decreasing time trend was noted, with a significant decline in Ni sensitivity compared to the situation observed right after Ni Directive implementation. This most likely represents the consequence of reduced Ni content in earring parts, although …

Do we have an alternative for the Rome III gastroduodenal symptom-based subgroups in functional gastroduodenal disorders? A cluster analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a heterogeneous biopsychosocial disorder. The Rome III consensus proposed a subdivision into epigastric pain syndrome and postprandial distress syndrome, based on gastroduodenal symptom pattern only; nausea/vomiting- and belching disorders were classified as separate functional gastroduodenal disorders (FGD). We aimed to investigate an alternative subdivision of FGD, taking into account gastric sensorimotor function, anxiety & depression and 'somatization', besides gastroduodenal symptoms. METHODS: Gastroduodenal symptom data were available for 857 con…

Through the steps of history: a report from the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology (EULAR) (June 16-19, 2010 - Rome, Italy).

Rome is an open book to human history, and traveling from the city center to the Nuova Fiera da Roma, as most of this year's attendees to EULAR had to do to reach the congress site, is a voyage from the remains of the Roman Empire throughout the middle ages and across most of human history to the modern architecture that characterizes the new exposition facilities next to the airport of Fiumicino. EULAR offers a yearly development on therapies for diseases with a clear, direct negative impact on physical functioning of the sufferers, and this report will review most of the therapeutic noveltie…

The Invisible Link Between Mind and Gut: The Effect of Alexithymia and Adjustment to Illness on Symptom Severity in IBS Patients With Rome IV Criteria.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gut-brain interaction disorder that significantly impacts quality of life, with symptoms influenced by stress, anxiety, dietary habits, and gut microbiota imbalances. Alexithymia, characterized by difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions, may exacerbate IBS symptoms by impairing stress management and illness perception. Additionally, poor adaptation to chronic illness can increase psychological burden and worsen symptom severity. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 148 IBS patients diagnosed using Rome IV criteria at a gastro…

Testing the Arabic-Saudi Arabia version of the Rome IV Diagnostic Questionnaire for functional gastrointestinal disorders for Children living in Saudi Arabia.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are a worldwide phenomenon described by painful, recurrent or chronic gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Variable types of FGID exist in a significant portion of children in Saudi Arabia (SA). While the studies and reports on child FGID are limited, the available ones show a notable significance of FGID in children in SA. The self-report Rome IV Diagnostic Questionnaire (DQ) globally recognizes the selection of symptom criteria and incidence thresholds. Using such a questionnaire would help clinicians provide a provisional diagnosis, serve as a case de…

The Modifying Role of Socioeconomic Position and Greenness on the Short-Term Effect of Heat and Air Pollution on Preterm Births in Rome, 2001-2013.

Urban green spaces have been associated with health benefits, but few studies have evaluated the role of greenness on pregnancy outcomes. We examined how the association between short-term exposure to heat and air pollution on the probability of preterm delivery is affected by the spatial variation of socioeconomic position (SEP) and greenness. We analyzed a cohort of newborns in Rome, from April to October of 2001-2013, defining preterm as births between the 22nd and the 36th week of gestation. We used a time series approach, with maximum apparent temperature (MAT), PM10, NO2, and O3 as expos…

Prevalence of antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 and condom use among outpatients at a sexually transmitted disease clinic in Rome.

To assess the prevalence of HIV-1 infection and study selected risk factors among patients attending a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases in Rome, 1442 outpatients seen consecutively between 20 February and 12 December 1989 were anonymously tested for anti-HIV-1. An evaluation of the trend of the HIV-1 infection was attempted by comparing the results of the present study with those obtained from a similar sample studied in 1986 in the same clinic. The overall estimated prevalence of anti-HIV-1 was 1.2% among heterosexual non-drug user subjects and 16.1% among homosexual or bisexual men. …

3D printed heart models assist in pre-procedural planning of the innominate vein to pulmonary venous atrium redirection (Hraska / Rome procedures).

Innominate vein redirection to the pulmonary venous atrium has been used in single ventricle patients in order to relieve lymphatic complications resulting from systemic venous hypertension. This has been achieved both surgically, known as the Hraska procedure and via transcatheter approach, known as the Rome procedure. Determining the pathway from the innominate vein to the pulmonary venous atrium is challenging with important intra- and extra-cardiac structures close-by. We present two cases; one surgical and one transcatheter approach, where 3D-printed cardiac models were used to assist in …
