BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a chronic facial skin disease of unclear origin. Epidemiological data are scarce and controversial, with reported prevalences ranging from 0·09% to 22%. To our knowledge, incidence rates have not been quantified before.
OBJECTIVES: In this observational study we quantified incidence rates of diagnosed rosacea in the U.K. and described demographic characteristics and the prevalence of ocular symptoms in patients with rosacea. We compared lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption between patients with rosacea and controls.
METHODS: Using the U.K.-based Ge…

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease affecting up to 10% of the population. It includes various combinations of characteristic signs and symptoms in a centrofacial distribution. There is a lack of consensus in the understanding of the different expressions of rosacea and the classification of the disease. It has been previously classified into four stages (pre-rosacea, stages I-III) and a variety of variants (persistent erythema and edema in rosacea, rosacea conglobata, rosacea fulminans, etc.). The National Rosacea Society (NRS) has classified rosacea into four subtypes (erythematotelangiectatic…

A number of different proteases and their inhibitors have a role in skin physiology and in the pathophysiology of inflammatory skin diseases … bition by topical SP inhibitors accelerated recovery of barrier function after acute abrogation. In rosacea, increased levels of the vasoactive and inflammatory host-defense peptide cathelicidin LL-37 and its proteolytic peptide fragments were found, which were explained by an abnormal production of tryptic activity originating from kallikrein-related pep …

Rosacea is one of the most common dermatoses of adults. Recent studies have improved our understanding of the pathophysiology of rosacea. Current concepts suggest that known clinical trigger factors of rosacea such as UV radiation, heat, cold, stress, spicy food, and microbes modulate Toll-like receptor signaling, induce reactive oxygen species, as well as enhance antimicrobial peptide and neuropeptide production. Downstream of these events cytokines and chemokines orchestrate an inflammatory response that leads to the recruitment and activation of distinct leukocyte subsets and induces the ch…

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease affecting up to 10% of the population in some European countries. Rosacea manifests as various combinations of characteristic signs and symptoms in a centrofacial distribution. At present, there is no consensus about the definition or classification of the clinical patterns of rosacea. Initially, four stages were differentiated (pre-rosacea then stages I through III), with several variants (e.g., persistent erythema and edema, rosacea conglobata, and rosacea fulminans). The National Rosacea Society (NRS) in the USA has classified rosacea into four subtypes (er…

Rosacea is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the skin and is associated with a number of etiological causes and inciting factors. It is characterized by erythematous changes of the facial skin, and commonly presents with papules, pustules, or telangiectasias. The 4 subtypes of rosacea are categorized according to secondary symptoms, such as pain, erythema, dryness, and edema. A number of therapies are available to treat rosacea, some of which can be used in combination. The mainstays of therapy are topical metronidazole, topical azelaic acid, and oral tetracyclines. Other pharmacotherap…

BACKGROUND: Topical and oral antibiotic/anti-inflammatory agents are mainstays of therapy for rosacea. However, costs and efficacies of these therapies vary widely.
OBJECTIVE: To determine relative cost-effectiveness of common therapeutic regimens using published data.
METHODS: Average daily costs (ADC) were determined based on treatment frequency and estimated gram usage for facial application of topical regimens of metronidazole (0.75%, 1%), azelaic acid (15%, 20%), sodium sulfacetamide and sulfur 10%/5%, and oral regimens of tetracycline, doxycycline, and isotretinoin. The ADC was compare…

Pharmacologic agents remain the mainstay for initial and maintenance treatment of rosacea. However, monochromatic (i.e., laser) and polychromatic light-based therapies are increasingly being used for the treatment of certain signs of rosacea. Despite the increased use of lasers and other light-based therapies, few well-controlled studies have been conducted on their use for the treatment of rosacea. The studies that do exist suggest that these modalities have value in treating erythematotelangiectatic rosacea, including persistent erythema and phymatous rosacea. Light-based therapies should be…

Acne rosacea belongs to the most common inflammatory dermatoses of the face. Current treatments for this disease remain unsatisfactory, that's why searching for new methods and remedy are very important. For the topical therapy we have used a new cream perolen ("New Pharma", Georgia). The main component of the creme is the water extract of gastric mucous membrane of cow, which is the source of proteolytic ferments. Another main component is a Perilla oil which contains unsaturated fatty acids--linolenic and linol, presented in the highest amounts. The cream is characterized by bactericidal, ba…

Rosacea is a common, chronic facial dermatosis that may present in varying manners. Subtypes of rosacea include erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous, and ocular. In this article, we discuss the diagnosis of these rosacea subtypes and focus on the therapeutics specific to each. Treatments include topical agents, oral antibiotics, laser therapies, surgical treatments, and the role of cosmetics and skin care.

Despite an incomplete understanding of the pathogenesis of rosacea, therapeutic modalities continue to expand. The principal subtype of rosacea includes erythematotelangiestatic rosacea, which is characterized by uncontrolled angiogenesis. Angiogenic growth factors such as fibroblast growth factors (FGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are currently targets of intense effort to inhibit deregulated blood vessel formation in diseases such as cancer. Here we report a 33-years-old woman with erythematotelangestatic rosacea who responds to a daily treatment of topically applied dobesi…

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disorder that affects 10% of the population. The prevalence of rosacea is highest among fair-skinned individuals, particularly those of Celtic and northern European descent. Since a cure for rosacea does not yet exist, management and treatment regimens are designed to suppress the inflammatory lesions, erythema, and to a lesser extent, the telangiectasia involved with rosacea.
OBJECTIVES: This review outlines the treatment options that are available to patients with rosacea.
METHODS: Published literature involving the treatment or management of r…

Lack of standardized rosacea nosology was the rationale for the National Rosacea Society to convene a committee of dermatology thought leaders to develop a standard classification system. Standardization of rosacea classification should be followed by standardization of treatment. Many pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions for rosacea are being used based on clinical observation alone. Many oral and topical pharmacologic agents, however, are validated by randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Topical therapies (eg, metronidazole or an alternative agent such as azelaic acid) and oral a…

Current treatment paradigms for rosacea focus on inflammatory lesions and other signs and symptoms of rosacea that appear on the skin surface. However, it is important to recognize the effects of the disease and its various treatments not only on the stratum corneum barrier but also on the biofilm. The effects of skin care products, cosmetics, and medications on the stratum corneum and biofilm must be carefully assessed, and nonirritating formulations should be used whenever possible.
