Gratitude Moderates the Mediating Effect of Deliberate Rumination on the Relationship Between Intrusive Rumination and Post-traumatic Growth.

PURPOSE: This study examines the moderating effect of gratitude on the mediating effect of deliberate rumination on the relationship between intrusive rumination and post-traumatic growth (PTG). METHODS: We used self-report questionnaires to collect data from 450 18-68-year-old participants (Mage = 39.73, SD = 13.73) residing in major cities and regions across South Korea. Data that were collected from 411 participants were subjected to analysis. Version 25 of SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) and PROCESS macro were used to analyze mediation, moderation, and moderated mediation ef

Prospective associations of co-rumination with friendship and emotional adjustment: considering the socioemotional trade-offs of co-rumination.

Co-ruminating, or excessively discussing problems, with friends is proposed to have adjustment tradeoffs. Co-rumination is hypothesized to contribute both to positive friendship adjustment and to problematic emotional adjustment. Previous single-assessment research was consistent with this hypothesis, but whether co-rumination is an antecedent of adjustment changes was unknown. A 6-month longitudinal study with middle childhood to midadolescent youths examined whether co-rumination is simultaneously a risk factor (for depression and anxiety) and a protective factor (for friendship problems). Interrelationships among voluntary intake, eating and ruminating behavior and ruminal motility of heifers fed corn silage.

Six heifers (1/4 Brahman X 1/4 Jersey X 1/2 Angus, 290 kg average weight) with ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulae given ad libitum access to corn silage with or without 100 mg monensin X head-1 were used to determine interrelationships among behavior, ruminal motility and intake. Voluntary intake was positively related (P less than .001) to eating time, duration of the main morning meal and daily mastication time. Intake was negatively related to unitary times [min X g dry matter-1 X (kg body weight X 75)-1] of eating (P less than .05), rumination (P less than .001), mastication (P less than

Pathogenesis of peste des petits ruminants virus in experimentally infected sheep.

Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) is a highly contagious morbillivirus affecting small ruminants. PPRV infection leads to a range of clinical signs, including fever, respiratory distress and diarrhoea. Infection of myeloid and lymphoid cells causes immune suppression, resulting in increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections. Higher disease severity is reported in goats as compared to sheep, but comparative pathogenesis studies of PPRV in these species are limited. We recently performed experimental PPRV infections in goats and now used the same strains and routes of inoculation …

Brown adipose tissue in ruminants: development, thermogenic function, and nutritional regulation.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is essential for neonatal ruminants to maintain body temperature and survive postnatal cold stress through non-shivering thermogenesis. At birth, BAT is abundant and mainly distributed in the neck, shoulder, perirenal region, and around the heart, but declines with age ("whitening"). This review summarizes BAT developmental dynamics, physiological functions, and the nutritional regulation of BAT, focusing on how fatty acids, carnitine, vitamins, and minerals modulate thermogenic activity through effects on mitochondrial function, lipid metabolism, and key signaling p…

Soybean silage as a protein-rich roughage for ruminants: recent advances.

Soybean silage has gained attention as a protein-rich roughage for ruminants, particularly in tropical regions where high-quality forage resources are limited. Compared with cereal silages, soybean silage provides higher crude protein. However, it is more difficult to ensile due to low water-soluble carbohydrate content, high moisture content, and high buffering capacity. These characteristics can delay pH decline, increase proteolysis, and lead to variable fermentation quality and animal responses. This review synthesizes recent research on soybean silage, with emphasis on forage characterist…

Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in small ruminants in Grenada, West Indies.

Economic losses and adverse effects on animals' health and productivity due to gastrointestinal parasites constitute a significant challenge for expanding and improving the small ruminant industry in developing countries. This study aimed to determine the diversity and geographic distribution of gastrointestinal parasites infecting small ruminants in Grenada. Seven hundred and thirteen fecal samples from 159 sheep and 554 goats from 64 farms in Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique were collected for coprological examination. Of 713 sheep and goat samples, 640 were positive for gastrointes…

A review of Babesiosis caused by Babesia ovis in small ruminants.

Babesiosis is a significant tick-borne disease that impacts both domestic and wild animals, as well as humans, with its prevalence being particularly high in tropical and subtropical areas. Among small ruminants, Babesia ovis is a leading cause of babesiosis, especially in areas where Rhipicephalus bursa ticks are prevalent. The transmission of the disease occurs through tick bites, imposing a considerable economic strain on livestock industries in regions where it is prevalent. Clinical manifestations of the disease include hemolytic anemia, fever, jaundice, lethargy, anorexia, weight loss, a…

Theileria lestoquardi and malignant theileriosis in small ruminants: an updated review.

Theileria lestoquardi is a virulent apicomplexan protozoan that induces malignant theileriosis in small ruminants (especially sheep and goats) throughout extensive areas of Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. Transmitted by ixodid ticks, this disease constitutes a major impediment to livestock health and productivity, commonly precipitating severe morbidity and high mortality within affected flocks. This updated review synthesizes contemporary understanding of Theileria lestoquardicovering the parasite’s fundamental biology, patterns of transmission, clinical presentation, diagnostic metho…

Paratuberculosis in small ruminants in the Sudan: prevalence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Paratuberculosis (PTB), caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), is a contagious and chronic enteric disease of ruminants and many non-ruminants leading to emaciation and death of the animal. PTB is poorly investigated in sheep and goats in Sudan, where these animals contribute significantly to food security and poverty alleviation as sources of income. They also play an important role in the national economy through animal exports. The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence of PTB and associated risk factors in small ruminants. Blood and fa…

[Guidelines for the vaccination of cattle and small ruminants - a summary].

In cattle and small ruminants, vaccinations are one of the most important measures for preventing infectious diseases. Many animal diseases that caused tremendous losses in the past, such as IBR, BVD or FMD, have been eradicted through long-term vaccination campaigns. Regular vaccinations against these diseases could meanwhile be suspended and are now reserved for exceptional situations only under the auspice of competent authorities. The concept of core and non-core vaccinations, which has proven successful in companion animals such as small animals and horses, does not work for farm animals …

Metabolism and Nutrition of L-Glutamate and L-Glutamine in Ruminants.

Although both L-glutamate (Glu) and L-glutamine (Gln) have long been considered nutritionally nonessential in ruminants, these two amino acids have enormous nutritional and physiological importance. Results of recent studies revealed that extracellular Gln is extensively degraded by ruminal microbes, but extracellular Glu undergoes little catabolism by these cells due to the near absence of its uptake. Ruminal bacteria hydrolyze Gln to Glu plus ammonia and, intracellularly, use both amino acids for protein synthesis. Microbial proteins and dietary Glu enter the small intestine in ruminants. Bo…

Molecular detection of bacterial zoonotic abortive agents from ruminants in Turkey.

Abortions in cattle and sheep are one of the major causes of economic losses worldwide. Brucella spp. are the most common infectious agent associated with these abortions. However, abortions caused by bacteria such as Listeria spp., Leptospira spp., Campylobacter spp. and Mycoplasma spp. are usually overlooked due to their sporadic nature and their status as non-priority abortion agents. In our study, we investigated the bacteria associated with abortion cases in cattle and sheep using PCR. For this purpose, we collected vaginal swab samples (n: 110) of aborted cattle and sheep, as well as sto

Examination of 3D sella turcica models in three species of ruminants.

Sella turcica is an important anatomical structure that contains the pituitary gland. Changes observed on the sella turcica facilitate the identification of diseases such as Down syndrome, Seckel syndrome and tuberculum sellae meningioma in humans. Therefore, studies in this region are critical for a better understanding of sella turcica. The crania of six adult male tuj sheep, five adult male hair goats and five adult male gazelles were used in the study. Cross-sectional images of the cranium were captured using computed tomography. Cross-sectional images were used to model the sella turcica

Understanding placentation in ruminants: a review focusing on cows and sheep.

Mammals differ regarding their placentae, but in all species placental trophoblasts interact intimately with the uterine endometrium to mediate the transfer of nutrients from the mother to the embryo/fetus through the closely juxtaposed microcirculatory systems of the uterus and placenta. Placentation in ruminants is intermediate between the non-invasive type, as observed in the epitheliochorial placenta of pigs, and the invasive type, as observed in the haemochorial placentae of mice and humans. In ruminants, placental trophoblast cells invade uterine endometrial tissue, but invasion is belie…

Sero-epidemiological study of zoonotic bacterial abortifacient agents in small ruminants.

Abortion is one of the leading causes of economic losses in the livestock industry worldwide. Chlamydia abortus, Coxiella burnetii, and Brucella spp. are the leading cause of late fetal loss in small ruminants. This study determined the seroprevalence of these agents in small ruminants in district Jhang. A total of 385 serum samples were taken from the sheep and goats from different flocks with a history of abortion and subjected to i-ELISA. Further, samples were analysed for liver enzymes and total serum protein using a semi-automated chemistry analyzer. The result of indirect commercial ELIS…

Barriers to vaccine use in small ruminants and poultry in Tanzania.

Vaccination is an important disease prevention and control measure; however, vaccine adoption by livestock farmers in Tanzania is still low. This cross-sectional study examined the challenges to vaccine use faced by livestock owners and animal health professionals (AHPs) in Tanzania. A questionnaire was administered to 216 households that kept small ruminants and poultry and 19 AHPs' data were collected electronically via the survey platform Qualtrics, and descriptive statistics were performed. Households with poultry reported vaccinating mostly against Newcastle disease (91.7%), fowl pox (48.…
