The relationship between harsh parenting and adolescent depression.

Guided by Beck's cognitive model of depression, this study comprehensively explores the mechanisms linking harsh parenting, rumination, and victimization to the development of adolescent depression. A total of 5047 adolescents were assessed using the Harsh Parenting Scale, Rumination Scale, Olweus Bullying/Victimization Questionnaire, and Beck Depression Inventory. The results indicated that harsh parenting positively influences adolescent depression. Moreover, rumination emerged as an important mediator between harsh parenting and adolescent depression, similar to victimization. Additionally,

The effectiveness of self-distanced versus self-immersed reflections among adults: Systematic review and meta-analysis of experimental studies.

Stressor events can be highly emotional and disruptive to our functioning, yet they also present opportunities for learning and growth via self-reflections. Self-distanced reflections in which one reasons about target events in ways that maximise their removal of the current self from the experiential reality are said to facilitate this reflective process. We tested the expectation that self-distanced reflections offer an advantage over self-immersed vistas via a pre-registered systematic review of seven electronic databases (Scopus, Medline, Web of Science, PsycInfo, CINAHL Plus, Embase, and

The relationships between rumination and core executive functions: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Rumination has been thought to relate to deficits in core executive functions (EFs), but the empirical findings for this idea are mixed. The aim of the present study is to synthesize existing literature to clarify these relations. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search revealed 34 published as well as unpublished studies on the associations between rumination and core EF. These studies report on 3,066 participants. The effect size in the meta-analyses was obtained by the z transformation of correlation coefficients. RESULTS: Analysis revealed significant negative associations

Developmental Origins of Rumination in Middle Childhood: The Roles of Early Temperament and Positive Parenting.

Rumination, a thinking style characterized by a repetitive inward focus on negative cognitions, has been linked to internalizing disorders, particularly depression. Moreover, research suggests that rumination may be a cognitive vulnerability that predisposes individuals to psychopathology. Surprisingly little is known, however, about the etiology and development of rumination. The present study examined the role of specific components of child temperamental negative emotionality (sadness, fear, anger) and effortful control (inhibition), as well as parenting behaviors during early childhood on

Academic stress profiles and bedtime procrastination among college students: the mediating role of rumination and the moderating effect of perceived stress.

BACKGROUND: While academic stress is a recognized predictor of sleep disturbances, traditional variable-centered research often obscures the population heterogeneity within this relationship. Adopting a person-centered perspective, this study identified latent configurations of academic stress among college students and examined the psychological mechanisms linking these profiles to bedtime procrastination (BPS). METHODS: A sample of 741 Chinese university students completed validated measures of academic stress, rumination dimensions, perceived stress, and BPS. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA)

More rumination and less effective emotion regulation in previously depressed women with preserved executive functions.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder is associated with very high recurrence rates, and specific vulnerability factors that increase the risk for repeated episodes should be identified. Impaired executive functions have repeatedly been found in remitted populations. The current study included both neutral and emotional executive tasks, and we expected to find impaired performance in unmedicated previously depressed women compared to controls. Furthermore, we hypothesized that the executive functions inhibition and shifting would be related to the ability to apply cognitive reappraisal and to

Cognitive Mechanisms in Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Patients and Survivors: Feasibility and Preliminary Insights from the Cognitions and Affect in Cancer Resiliency Study.

This cross sectional pilot study assesses the feasibility of conducting online research into cognitive mechanisms in adolescent and young adult cancer populations. Twenty-one participants, aged 18-39 years, answered questionnaires about mental defeat, rumination, cancer worry, anxiety, and experience participating in such research. Seven participants scored in the clinical range for anxiety. Cancer-related worry was common. Rumination and mental defeat were positively associated with anxiety. The participants reported the length and type of questions to be appropriate and not distressing. Find

Cognitive coping, goal adjustment, and depressive and anxiety symptoms in people undergoing infertility treatment: a prospective study.

The relationships between cognitive coping strategies, goal adjustment, and symptoms of depression and anxiety were studied in people with fertility problems. Both cross-sectional and prospective relationships were studied in a sample of 313 patients attending an infertility clinic. Self-report questionnaires were filled out at home. Positive refocusing, rumination and catastrophizing, and goal reengagement were related to symptoms of depression and anxiety. When looking at the long-term effects, rumination and catastrophizing were also related to emotional problems nine months later. These fi

Relationship between World Assumptions and Post-Traumatic Growth among Polish Cancer Patients: Moderating Effect of Rumination.

BACKGROUND: Although post-traumatic growth is believed to be the result of complex interplays between various factors, cognitive variables appear to play a special role in these interactions. Yet, research on this topic is scant. Therefore, the first purpose of this study was to verify whether there is a direct relationship between world assumptions and post-traumatic growth among Polish cancer patients. As the effect of psychological change in post-traumatic growth may be affected by basic beliefs about the world and oneself, the second goal was to assess whether this association is moderated

Rumination, psychological distress and post-traumatic growth in women diagnosed with breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Rumination, the repetitive and recursive rehearsal of cognitive content, has been linked to depression and anxiety in physically well populations, and to post-traumatic growth (PTG) in physical illness populations. Women diagnosed with breast cancer may experience both psychological distress and PTG. As rumination may influence outcomes through distinct pathways, this study investigated the association of intrusion, brooding and instrumental subcomponents of rumination with psychological distress and PTG in the breast cancer context. METHODS: Women diagnosed with primary breast can

The role of rumination in the relationship between symptoms of insomnia and depression in adolescents.

There is a strong relationship between the symptoms of insomnia and depression, however, little is understood about the factors that mediate this relationship. An understanding of these underlying mechanisms may inform the advancement of existing treatments to optimise reductions in insomnia and depression when they co-occur. This study examined rumination and unhelpful beliefs about sleep as mediators between symptoms of insomnia and depression. It also evaluated the effect of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) on rumination and unhelpful beliefs about sleep, and whether these

Rumination, Basic Beliefs, and Posttraumatic Growth in Cancer Patients: A Moderated Mediation Model.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a highly distressing and traumatic experience that can significantly impact individuals' psychological well-being. Whereas many cancer patients may experience negative psychological outcomes, such as posttraumatic stress symptoms, a subset of individuals also reports positive psychological changes known as posttraumatic growth. OBJECTIVE: To contribute to theory-driven development of these treatments by exploring the role of deliberate rumination in posttraumatic growth, along with the basic beliefs that might shape it. METHODS: A sample of cancer patients (n = 139) com

The relationship between rumination, PTSD, and depression symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are highly comorbid (Elhai et al., 2008. J. Clin. Psychiatry, 69, (4), 597-602). Rumination is a cognitive mechanism found to exacerbate and maintain both PTSD and MDD (Elwood et al., 2009. Clin. Psychol. Rev. 29, (1), 87-100; Olatunji et al., 2013. Clin. Psychol.: Sci. Pract. 20, (3), 225-257). AIMS: Assess whether four rumination subtypes moderate the relationship between comorbid PTSD and MDD symptoms. METHOD: We consecutively sampled patients (N=45) presenting to a mental health clinic using self-report

Prospective Pathways Among Rumination, Depression, and Insomnia in Youth.

A growing body of research suggests sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms do not just co-occur but influence each other over time. While emerging evidence supports a bidirectional relationship, developmental pathways between sleep problems and depression remain understudied in youth. Rumination may serve as a potential modifiable cognitive mechanism linking these conditions. However, rumination's role in these developmental pathways remains largely unexplored, particularly across childhood and adolescence. This study employed a cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) to investigate prospective as

Perceived stress and compulsive buying among Saudi adults: the mediation role of rumination.

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: Prior studies have claimed that people engage in compulsive buying in an attempt to deal with stress. Nonetheless, not every stressed person engages in compulsive buying. It is therefore important to investigate the cognitive mechanisms underlying such behavior. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between perceived stress and compulsive buying, and the mediation role of rumination. In particular, the study focused on these relationships among Saudi adults. METHOD: The study used a convenience sampling method and a cross-sectional design. A sample of 455 Sau

Indecisiveness moderates the relationship between rumination modes and depressive symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder is a debilitating and common mental health condition. Rumination and indecisiveness are both well-established cognitive risk factors for depressive symptoms, but their interactive effects remain underexplored. Drawing on theories about rumination's level of construal, which distinguish between abstract and concrete modes of thinking, this study examined whether aversive indecisiveness moderates the relationships between rumination modes (abstract and concrete) and concurrent depressive symptoms. METHOD: We recruited two samples: an undergraduate student

Hooked on a thought: Associations between rumination and neural responses to social rejection in adolescent girls.

Rumination is a significant risk factor for psychopathology in adolescent girls and is associated with heightened and prolonged physiological arousal following social rejection. However, no study has examined how rumination relates to neural responses to social rejection in adolescent girls; thus, the current study aimed to address this gap. Adolescent girls (N = 116; ages 16.95-19.09) self-reported on their rumination tendency and completed a social evaluation fMRI task where they received fictitious feedback (acceptance, rejection) from peers they liked or disliked. Rejection-related neural

I've got a friend in me: The effect of self-compassion on affect via emotion regulation in adolescents using ecological momentary assessment.

Self-compassion has been associated with reductions in negative affect and increases in positive affect in both adolescents and adults. Surprisingly, little research has investigated the pathways through which self-compassion and affect are linked in adolescents. Therefore, the current study examined how self-compassion, assessed in daily life, influenced momentary affect via three emotion regulation strategies: cognitive reappraisal, distraction, and rumination. A total of 236 adolescents (Mage = 13.47 years, SDage = .42, 11-15 years; 130 males) participated in an ecological momentary assessm
