Effect of goethite coating and humic acid on the transport of bacteriophage PRD1 in columns of saturated sand.

The transport of bacteriophage PRD1, a model virus, was studied in columns containing sediment mixtures of quartz sand with goethite-coated sand and using various solutions consisting of monovalent and divalent salts and humic acid (HA). Without HA and in the absence of sand, the inactivation rate of PRD1 was found to be as low as 0.014 day(-1) (at 5+/-3 degrees C), but in the presence of HA it was much lower (0.0009 day(-1)), indicating that HA helps PRD1 to survive. When the fraction of goethite in the sediment was increased, the removal of PRD1 also increased. However, in the presence of HA…

Ecology of sand flies (Diptera: psychodidae: phlebotominae) in the north of the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil.

Peixoto de Azevedo is located in the north of State of Mato Grosso, where environmental alterations led to an outbreak of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in the 80s. The parasite from patients was characterized as Leishmania (V.) braziliensis. The aim of this study is to contribute to the sand fly ecology of Central-West Brazil. Captures were carried out monthly using CDC light traps. Twenty-six species of sand fly were characterized; among which Lutzomyia (Lutzomyia) spathotrichia, L. runoides and L. (Psychodopygus) llanosmartinsi were recorded in the State of Mato Grosso for the first time.…

Aquatic reclamation in the Athabasca, Canada, oil sands: naphthenate and salt effects on phytoplankton communities.

Microcosm experiments with natural indigenous phytoplankton communities were conducted to assess the effects of waters from oil sands extraction processes, emphasizing the naphthenate and salt constituents. Process waters of varying ages (zero to eight years) remediation histories, and chemical composition were obtained from outdoor mesocosms and inoculated with phytoplankton assemblages from a reference lake in the study area. Community composition measures, including percentage model affinity (PMA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), revealed significant community effects of water f…

Patterns of infection of haemoparasites in the fat sand rat, Psammomys obesus, in Tunisia, and effect on the host.

Two bacterial and one protozoan blood parasite, belonging to the genera Bartonella, Borrelia and Babesia, were studied in a Tunisian population of Psammomys obesus. Seasonal changes in the abundance of the parasites and host were monitored in a longitudinal field survey lasting 17 months. Blood samples collected during eight rodent-trapping sessions, between September 1995 and January 1997, were examined microscopically. Bartonella sp. showed a seasonal pattern, with most transmission occurring in summer and autumn; most rodents (90%) were infected in August-September, when they were at low de

Water wells as a habitat of sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae) vectors of visceral leishmaniasis in Greece.

Overall, 37 of 79 water wells in 3 diverse geographic areas of Greece were found to harbor sand flies. The predominant species were Phlebotomus tobbi Adler, Theodor & Lourie and P. neglectus Tonnoir, species implicated in the transmission of Leishmania infantum Nicolle. Three additional species of Phlebotomus and 2 Sergentomyia spp. also encountered. Wells appear to be resting and possibly breeding habitat for sand flies in Greece.

Insecticide barrier spraying for the control of sand fly vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis in rural Guatemala.

An initial evaluation of insecticide barrier spraying directed against sand fly vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis was done in a nonclimax forested area with heavy undergrowth in Peten, Guatemala. A 100 m-wide swath of vegetation was sprayed once with a 1:3 mixture of cyfluthrin insecticide and a palm oil carrier using back-pack sprayers to simulate a central cantonment area in one site while another site remained as an untreated control. Prior to spraying and throughout 87 days post-treatment, sand fly populations were monitored at both sites with light traps set at ground and canopy levels a…

Refractory barriers in the sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae) to infection with Leishmania panamensis.

The life cycle of Leishmania panamensis in Phlebotomus papatasi was studied to characterize barriers limiting parasite colonization, differentiation, migration, and attachment in an unnatural sand fly host. The insects were fed a suspension of L. panamensis-infected macrophages and human erythrocytes, and were examined up to 16 days post-infection by light and electron microscopy. Histologic examination of 401 flies showed the peritrophic membrane to be the first important barrier to parasite establishment in the gut lumen. In most flies, parasites were unable to escape from the closed peritro…

Development of an enzyme linked-immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the sand fly fever viruses detection.

An Enzyme linked-immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was recently established for the detection of sandfly Naples and Sicilian viruses (SFN and SFS) from laboratory infected as well as wild caught sandflies in Egypt. Optimal dilutions of the reactants including the coating antibodies (Rabbit antiserum), detecting antibodies (Mouse antiserum), conjugate and the time used for incubation of the substrate (ABTS) were determined for both SFN and SFS viruses. The ELISA test showed to be highly specific and sensitive except for the SFN virus which cross reacted with Toscana virus. A total of 1582 sandflies, …

Late keratopathy due to intraocular sand particles. A case history with misleading tests for allergy.

After nine years, a boy was cured for his presumed allergic eye disease by microsurgical removal of intraocular sand particles, left in the anterior chamber after a childhood trauma. Sand being considered inert, together with seasonal variation in symptoms and misleading positive tests for allergy were to explain the doctor's delay. Involutive keratopathy eventually developed, with vessel ingrowth, severe photophobia and lacrimation, low intraocular pressure, and a visual acuity of only 1/60. Eight years after surgery there is a clear cornea and a corrected visual acuity of 6/12. The axial len…

Arboreal microhabitats associated with phlebotomine sand flies in Caribbean Colombia: Integrative identification using COI barcoding.

Arboreal cavities, tabular roots and bark-associated structures provide protected daytime shelters for phlebotomine sand flies and may also contain conditions suitable for immature development. We characterized sand flies collected during a targeted three-day survey in Bellacohita, Moñitos, Córdoba, Colombia, in 2024 and used COI barcoding as an integrative identification tool. Active searches were conducted from 06:00-10:00 and 16:00-19:00 at 63 trees in 31 domiciles; 21 trees contained adult sand flies. Direct arboreal collections comprised 298 morphologically assigned specimens, dominated b…

Optimization of visibility-adaptive expressway early warning schemes under sand-dust weather considering driver workload.

Objective: Sand-dust weather conditions severely reduce visibility and pavement friction on desert expressways, substantially increasing crash risks. Existing early warning systems rely primarily on fixed thresholds and single-modal information, often neglecting driver cognitive and physiological workload. This study aimed to develop and optimize a visibility-adaptive multimodal early warning scheme for desert expressways under sand-dust weather conditions, with a focus on balancing driving safety and human workload. Methods: A high-fidelity driving simulator was used to construct four visibili…

Shear Behavior and Predictive Model of Desert Sand Concrete Beams Subjected to Freeze-Thaw Cycles.

To explore the shear behavior and evolutionary pattern of desert sand concrete beams (DSCBs) subjected to freeze-thaw cycles, 16 DSCBs were subjected to rapid freeze-thaw cycling and shear tests, with desert sand replacement ratios (0%, 20%, 40%, and 60%) and numbers of freeze-thaw cycles (0, 25, 50, and 75) considered as the main variables. The failure mode, diagonal crack development, diagonal cracking load, shear capacity, and load-stirrup strain curves of DSCBs were tested and analyzed. The results indicate that all specimens exhibited typical shear-compression failure. The diagonal crack …

Shear strength and damage model of silty sand in Daxing 'anling under freeze-thaw cycles.

This study examines the evolution of mechanical properties of silty sand from the Daxing' anling region under coupled freeze-thaw cycles and confining pressure, using triaxial testing. The results show that at low confining pressure and with zero or limited freeze-thaw cycles, the stress-strain response exhibits strain softening, indicative of brittle failure. In contrast, at high confining pressure or after multiple freeze-thaw cycles, the behaviour transitions to strain hardening, characterised by plastic failure. Freeze-thaw cycling markedly degrades the soil's mechanical performance. The f…

First report using near-infrared spectroscopy to age-grade Phlebotomus papatasi [Scopoli, 1786] sand flies.

Vector age and survival directly influence vectorial capacity and disease transmission potential. Current age-grading techniques for phlebotomine sand flies are time-intensive and destructive as they require dissection by highly skilled laboratory personnel that groups hematophagous females as young or old depending on parity status. This study examined the potential of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to age-grade Phlebotomus papatasi sand flies, a primary vector of Leishmania major, a causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Female (n = 746) and male (n = 497) adult P. papatasi were coll…

New non-ureolytic heterotrophic microbial induced carbonate precipitation for suppression of sand dune wind erosion.

The detrimental effects of sand storms on agriculture, human health, transportation network, and infrastructures pose serious threats in many countries worldwide. Hence, wind erosion is considered a global challenge. An environmental-friendly method to suppress wind erosion is to employ microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP). However, the by-products of ureolysis-based MICP, such as ammonia, are not favorable when produced in large volumes. This study introduces two calcium formate-bacteria compositions for non-ureolytic MICP and comprehensively compares their performance with two …

Investigating potential sand fly vectors after the first reported outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by species of the genus Leishmania, which are transmitted through the bite of infected female sand flies. Since the first reported outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Ghana, in 1999, there has been limited published information on its vectors and reservoir hosts there. Previous studies have shown strong dominance of the sand fly genus Sergentomyia over the genus Phlebotomus in Ghana. Thus the aim of this study was to determine the possible sand fly vector species in Ghana, as well as their human-feeding behavior, from the time of the f…

TCE degradation in groundwater by chelators-assisted Fenton-like reaction of magnetite: Sand columns demonstration.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation in sand columns has been investigated to evaluate the potential of chelates-enhanced Fenton-like reaction with magnetite as iron source for in situ treatment of TCE-contaminated groundwater. The results showed that successful degradation of TCE in sand columns was obtained by nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA)-assisted Fenton-like reaction of magnetite. Addition of ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS) resulted in an inhibitory effect on TCE degradation in sand columns. Similar to EDDS, addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) also led to an inhibition of…
